21.01.2022 I learnt something yesterday.
18.01.2022 Tomorrow, I'm speaking at the NPO in Hilversum about the future of radio. Here's a slide from it - worthwhile noting that live radio on headphones is not a thing. My suggestion: put your station on speakers. Make your content on-demand.
17.01.2022 This is fascinating - James Cridland - radio futurologist edits his Podnews podcast using Descript's new Podcast editing tool, where you can edit your audio using the transcript. James's music is from Devaweb - see it in action!
16.01.2022 As part of @Canvas8 #ExpertOutlook 2020 I talk about podcasting’s future. More details over here: http://bit.ly/expertoutlookslideshare #expertoutlook2020
16.01.2022 I went to the CBAA Conference 2019 today, and after I spoke, I hid in the back of a session about DAB in Australia. Some stats and numbers in this Twitter thread. Given that I never hear DAB+ mentioned on the radio, excepting generic and bland promos, I'm astonished at the 30.4% figure. That's almost where it is in the UK (at 39.7%).
16.01.2022 What's the future of radio? Could it be... podcasting? Over 4,600 people get Podnews every morning in their email inbox: a quick overview of the latest news for podcasting and on-demand. You should, too: it's free. https://podnews.net/
14.01.2022 Wonderful to have taken part in Radiodays Africa just now. What a splendid conference. As I said "on stage" - ignore other countries and other markets at your peril: you'll learn so much getting out of your home market.
14.01.2022 The radio is one of the most important breakthroughs in human connection. But since its invention over a 100 years ago, it hasn't changed too much since. We sat... down with James Cridland - radio futurologist and Radio Days Asia Rosie Smith to break down the modern day radio experience, what the future holds and whether it could change soon. Oh.. and what's this thing about podcasts? For more information about Radiodays, visit www.radiodaysasia.com. Here’s James Cridland speaking about BFM and the future of radio at www.asiaradiotoday.com/news/take-look-future-kl-august-2019.
13.01.2022 My weekly newsletter this week covers tin hats and censorship. And Norway. And Logan.
13.01.2022 Shared on Twitter, but might as well share here too - the long-term trend for UK radio (all adults), from #RAJAR "Reach of population", aka how may people are listening, is virtually unchanged since 1999 - though you could argue a small decline in recent years. "Hours a week per listener", though, declined slightly from a high of 24 hours down to a little over 20 hours. Not too bad for the changes in technology since 1999.... Another way of reading these graphs, which is truthful enough - "reach and hours at second-lowest figures since records began".
13.01.2022 Fascinating to see what happens with radio under lockdown. We're in a situation in Australia where we can compare lockdown vs no lockdown in the same survey. (Future of radio? Strong. Future of music-intensive radio? Hmm.) https://james.crid.land/update/pandemic-radio-australia
13.01.2022 Chatting with James Cridland - radio futurologist about Digital Home Assistants (aka Smart Speakers) ((aka "Alexa, cook my breakfast!)). Will they save radio ? Recorded thanks to EBS Radio
09.01.2022 Black day for radio. 43 local breakfast shows, 24 drivetime shows and 10 studio buildings all to be closed by the UK's Global Radio. https://media.info//global-to-network-capital-heart-and-sm RadioToday estimate over 250 radio presenters will lose their jobs, with expected consolidation by Bauer later this year. https://media.info//opinion-uk-commercial-radio-presenter-
09.01.2022 This is quite a moment, I think. NPR isn't your typical broadcaster, and indeed they don't own any terrestrial radio stations (they have "member stations" instead who take parts of their programming), but even so, quite a thing.
06.01.2022 Today: Pandora adds podcast analytics; Apple Podcasts to be upgraded; Twitter adds audio posts; Spotify signs superhero exclusives, and a first Original podcast for Australia; more cuts in US public radio; an update for Castro; Don Lemon launches podcast https://podnews.net/update/pandora-podcast-analytics
05.01.2022 Well, goodness. Apple has launched some online radio stations. They're quite good. And, I'm speaking in an online webinar tomorrow and you're invited. https://james.crid.land/update/apple-music-radio
05.01.2022 Tom Webster discovers a fascinating statistic about US audio listening - and suggests things we can learn from it (for podcasting and for radio). https://podnews.net/article/the-time-bandit

03.01.2022 Good news! A new weekly newsletter! Focusing on adtech in podcasting! Better news! I'm not writing this one! It's being written by Bryan Barletta, who's worked in the podcast adtech space for a long, long time. Free to subscribe.... https://adtech.podnews.net/go-subscribe/pn
02.01.2022 Interesting that Anchor felt that they needed to clarify their terms of service. https://podnews.net/update/anchor-tos
