25.01.2022 The festive season can be a very difficult time for many, including parents who cannot be with their children. I recently caught up with author, relationship c...oach and men's mentor, Michael Lauria. He describes a live saving moment when, after 18 months of not being able to see his kids, pain and grief overwhelmed his will to live . At that instant, Michael received a simple text message of love from his son, which changed the course of his life. Turning his pain and grief into a journey of self-actualisation and ownership, Michael set an inextinguishable purpose for himself and many others, penning the Amazon #1 best seller Forging Excalibur - Rediscover your Masculinity. 24.01.2022 Today is International Men's Day. Often asked about my passion, dedication and tireless interest around men’s and boy’s concerns and why I get so shouty about... their many issues that go largely unrecognised. Well, I’m egalitarian to the core concerned for the wellbeing of everyone and merely addressing the lack of support and resources that exclusively address the male condition. For my very own written contribution to International Men’s Day, I’m re sharing observations, experiences and interactions through my private, public and workplace collaborations, in an effort to illustrate some of the lesser known things about our men and boys and how stigma and stereotyping can affect their feelings. In no particular order: MEN do talk, show emotion and seek help. Creating environments that support dignity, pride, masculinity and privacy help support this. MEN crave affection, love and tenderness. MEN experience body image issues and more often than is known, manage an eating disorder and/or other self-harming practices. Many MEN experience un-diagnosed post-natal depression. MEN cry and are more likely to repress or weep in isolation so as to not appear weak. Vulnerability, sensitivity and sentimental feelings are all MASCULINE qualities that are often incorrectly interpreted as feminine attributes. MALE suicide is not always connected to mental illness or challenge. Situational crisis such as relationship breakdown, alienation from children and financial burden are common contributors. More than is ever reported or known, MEN are victims of domestic violence by their intimate partner - extending to physical, emotional, verbal and financial abuse Just because MEN don’t use lots of words, doesn’t mean that they are not thinking, feeling, listening and considering. BOYS raised in environments where they’re not encouraged and sometimes prevented from participating in domestic duties, can lead to purposelessness through lack of experiencing responsibility. The narrative about masculinity has become a constant and confusing negative (toxic masculinity) this is seriously affecting the way MEN and BOYS feel and behave. At any given situation, if you reverse the genders, does this seem OK? Help me celebrate, recognise and support International Men’s Day, by sharing this piece and considering how you can help engender change through reducing stigma around Men and their issues. Visit us at the Australian Men's Health Forum to find out more. Thank you to the thousands of people who continue to support my efforts through kind, thoughtful words of encouragement and acknowledgement that Men also matter. Happy International Men’s Day! 21.01.2022 Back in January, I had much delight in hosting two singing, dancing and acting stars from very different generations: 11 year old, Flynn Turner had recently pla...yed the lead role of Aladdin in his school production and Will Centurion, an accomplished veteran of musical theatre also performed in Walt Disney’s Aladdin years later, reinventing himself as a qualified counsellor for young entertainers. 18.01.2022 Tomorrow heralds the start of Men’s Health Week 2020. It’s been recorded that men aged over 85 have the highest suicide rate in Australia, and more than double that of our teenagers. Risk factors are not necessarily related to mental health challenge, rather, things like passing of a loved one, isolation, loss of purpose and feeling like a burden to others. One of my great joys is spending time with my friend Ken Lyons. At 95, he's one of the smartest, wittiest and energetic people I know - the world is a better place with him in it. Engaging with our older friends can provide enormous value and wisdom. #menshealthweek #menshealth #malesuicide #suicideprevention
16.01.2022 In the lead up to Men’s Health Week 2021, we’ll hear statistics, outcomes, intentions and ideas around things men should be doing to improve their health and wellbeing. I decided to kick off with something a little more up close and personal actually spending a day in the life of a man - true blue truckie, Chris Smith of Redpath Carriers. He generously invited me to jockey and chat whilst hauling 24,960 kg's of hard Australian wheat, in his 1999 Kenworth104 Aerodyne, to the... historic, gold mining town of Ballarat. Starting at the Port of Melbourne we yacked about how happiness, far outweighs money, physical exercise and diet on the road are important all wrapped up in 17 minutes of waffle that contains some beautiful gems. Hopefully this little piece will inspire people to wonder about what’s on a truck, where it’s going, who it’s serving and why not to mention the person behind the wheel. Unscripted and rough as guts, please share this simple, but ever so special adventure with Chris and I. #trucking #truckinglife #truckingindustry #lovewhatwedo #happinessmatters #ballarat #australiangrown #menshealth #mensmentalhealth #menshealthweek2021 #nutritionmatters #ontheroad #kenworthtrucks Kenworth Truck Co.. 15.01.2022 As Victorians brace for another lockdown, hope and gratitude are a couple of simple things we can keep hold of. Yesterday, provides such a perfect reflection of... these things for me, when I was able to participate in a cause, close to my heart and an unexpected chance to feel truly blessed with old and new friends. Love Letter to Football is an occasion that, with the massive effort of Radio 3AW's Ross Stevenson and the team at Australian Prostate Centre brings together hundreds of people who really care about the impact of prostate cancer and the ongoing effects on men, their families, friends and supporters. For me, during the next stage of uncertainty, yesterday’s experience will remain a great reminder that people are truly awesome and when we work together, almost anything is possible. 11.01.2022 Congratulations Christine Morgan and Australia's Suicide Prevention Taskforce for producing a balanced and sensical Interim Advice Report: Towards a national whole-of government approach to suicide prevention in Australia. Finally, there's hope, with a gender focused approach, we may see some desperately needed attention for our men. Thank you . "Priority Action: Men should be identified as a priority population within national suicide prevention plans, ensuring a focus on m...eeting men where they are and providing targeted approaches and supports. Priority Action: Immediate action to be taken to increase capacity to provide targeted outreach and support at the point of distress, especially for services engaging with men, including training for frontline workers in family, legal and workplace settings as well as at critical points of disconnection and transition life points." https://lnkd.in/geTG7My #suicideprevention #malesuicide #menshealth

09.01.2022 A range of Australian research identified that over half of all male suicides are not predominantly associated with a mental health diagnosis. Based on coronial... reports, male suicides in Australia are: twice as likely to be linked to bereavement 3.5 times more likely to be linked to relationship issues 4 times more likely to be linked to child custody issues 5 times more likely to be linked to pending or recent unemployment nearly 9 times more likely to be linked to legal issues 12 times more likely to be linked to money issues. Tomorrow’s guest, relationship coach and men's mentor, Michael Lauria, experienced most of these risk factors, all at once, when, back in 2009, his family unit dismantled. Turning his pain and grief into a journey of self-actualisation and ownership, he set a lifesaving purpose for himself and many other men, penning the Amazon #1 best seller Forging Excalibur - Rediscover your Masculinity. Tune in tomorrow, Sunday 7 December, 10.30am-12 noon at 94.1FM 3WBC - hear what it feels like being Michael Lauria and more about his trademark 7 Standards of Men. 08.01.2022 Today is World Suicide Prevention Day and in my role of Vice President at the Australian Men's Health Forum, I'd like to shine a light on resources we create to raise awareness around some of the unknown risk factors that contribute to the astronomical, global male suicide statistics. Please take time to consider and share this information - in an attempt to recognise that male suicide is so much more than a mental health challenge. #menshealth #malesuicide #mentoo #wspd2020
07.01.2022 Back at our 2018 annual White Owl for Men's Health charity event, I spoke with a young man who asked asked, with a mixture of hesitation and determination, "do you know what's in my backpack?". He began describing his survival of prostate cancer and consequent incontinence - one of the many humiliating, isolating and debilitating outcomes, common to men who have had surgery or radiation for prostate cancer. The backpack, he said, held his shame - shame of having to carry hi...s urine soaked nappy because no such facilities are available in male bathrooms for their disposal. There were tears in his eyes as he talked more about isolation and the stripping of his dignity, pride and masculinity - highlighting that such a small investment in male public bathrooms could make a life changing a difference for him and many others. Recently my eyes popped in utter awe when I read about the initiative of Blokes4Bins https://bins4blokes.org.au/. Bins for hygiene products are considered a given in women’s toilets, but what about the men’s? If you ask the majority of our population, they would wonder why men need sanitary bins. This is a life changing initiative and groundbreaking cause and I encourage everyone to consider taking any kind of action. #menshealth #malesuicide #Bins4Blokes #AMHF Continence Foundation of Australia #prostatecancer Australian Prostate Centre #incontinence See more
07.01.2022 I’m back in the studios at 94.1FM 3WBC this coming Sunday - but live guests are not yet permitted . I’ve prepared a cook up of great minds and mentors, for a flavour packed panel, bound to deliver a rich and nourishing radio recipe. First on the pass, is none other than chef, founder and writer, Matt Wilkinson, who has recently taken up residency at the Mornington Peninsula winery restaurant Montalto. In his spare time, Matt is the creative director at Four Pillars Gin. ...He’ll be followed closely by writer, eater, traveler and cook, Dani Valent who is also well known for spectacular journalism at The Age Epicure, Good Food. I’ll be topping the show off with Robbie Bell, founder of City Larder Charcuterie. He also runs his own podcast called 'Cooking the Books' where he interviews prominent chefs and food industry professionals. I’ll be asking my trademark question what does it feel like, being you, today? not to mention, drawing on their ideas, insights and contribution to good mental health in the hospitality industry. Tune in tomorrow, Sunday 8 November, 10.30am-12 noon at 94.1FM 3WBC - You can also stream live from anywhere around the world https://lnkd.in/gz7qgNT.
