25.01.2022 What do I need | When we’re planning a trip away I go into stalking mode on all of the booking platforms looking for a place with budget in mind, but also with a critical eye in place for dated bathroom cabinetry and hotel blankets that look like they’re from the 70s and most likely when they were also last cleaned and if they charge for children then no thank you very much (ugh we’re there - the thrifty griswolds on tour). When we started Raffah I had all of this in mind eve...ry step of the way, I asked friends and family what they like in accommodation and so on, my research was extensive. It’s also really important to me (not so much Nick, he’d dive under that 70s blanket and sleep for a week ) that if we have our small children in tow that we are relaxed and comfortable with our surrounds, yet style is not compromised so once they’re tucked up in their (French flax linen thank you very much) beds then we can retreat fireside with dinner for two and a bottle of tassie plonk. 14.01.2022 It’s windy and cold today but the wind is now carrying the slightest hint of spring in the air. It’s not that bone jarring cold that hits you and you can’t shake it. 11.01.2022 This weekend is the annual Oatlands Heritage & Bullock Festival. A festival celebrating all things heritage in the streets of Oatlands. A festival celebrating bullocks? One might ask. In the 1940s & 50s village residents would pay 10 shillings per year to the local council to enable their milking cows to roam the back streets of Oatlands. A registration tag was fitted to a collar worn around the cow’s neck to show that the bovine had the right to roam the village. They would... graze the shore of Lake Dulverton and eventually end up in the lake occasionally with just the tops of their heads above water, eating the native grasses and reeds. At the end of the day, the cows would be caught and taken home for the night, milked in the morning and released to once again roam for another day of grazing and launching into Lake Dulverton idyllic really! Unless as an owner you had to wade in to the lake to retrieve your cow There will be fabulous artisan demonstrations by blacksmiths, tanners, spinners and weavers, bullocks roaming down the Main Street, along with delicious Tasmanian food and drink stands at Callington Park nestled in right beneath the beautiful old flour mill. 07.01.2022 Pulling off the Heritage Highway into the sandstone village of Oatlands on a winter’s afternoon is like stepping back in time - the main street is lined with perfectly preserved sandstone buildings, combined with beautiful old weatherboard cottages. You can immediately tell that people take pride in their homes here. The street is wide and on either side stand a combination of London plane trees & silver birches which are perfectly offset by beautiful old street lights that g...low amber in the evenings. As the sun sets behind the rolling hills of surrounding farmland, the air grows thick with the smell of freshly stoked wood fires and carries a crispness that clears your head and fills your lungs. 06.01.2022 Tiny Houses | Just prior to my departure from Melbourne for Tasmania, I worked for the most gorgeous Dutch couple at their stunning homeware & furniture business. Upon their return from a trip to the Netherlands they presented me with these most adorable little ceramic houses which are salt and pepper shakers but I have always had them nestled away safely on a shelf or as pictured now residing on a little bedside at Raffah. My cousin has just informed me that her grandmother ...collected and gifted to her children similar little vessels from a Dutch airline, KLM which they presented their inflight gin to guests in - each little house has a symbolic meaning and I believe my little S&P shaker houses are fashioned in similar light and salt is Rembrandt’s home and pepper, Anne Frank’s. 03.01.2022 When one is isolated, it’s best to ensure your bedroom is both pleasing on the eye and comfortable. Fortunately I’m able to potter about here doing a few rejigs here and there in preparation for when the dust settles and we re-emerge back into civilisation, slightly disheveled with the most appalling hair and a slightly relaxed figure as a result of eating 24/7... or is that just me?

02.01.2022 So that’s it! What a crazy weekend! We’re all bunkered down in our respective states and homes. Raffah has had its final cancellation, so time to regroup (fix the garden and rejig the interiors!!) for a couple of months. We’ll shut the doors until at least May but if anybody has remained in Tasmania since boarder closure and needs a place to stay for a couple weeks or months then DM me and we’ll talk prices. ...
