16.01.2022 hi everyone another Pen and Wash session at Port Adelaide for the Port Walks event.there is another session next Sunday .let me know if you would like to join us.thanks

16.01.2022 If you’re heading out for a bush walk today, see if you can pick your own Ellis Rowan-inspired ‘Flowering Eucalyptus’ bunch. Ellis Rowan is a celebrated flower ...painter of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born into the pioneering family of pastoralist Charles Ryan, Rowan spent part of her childhood on a sheep station near the Strathbogie Ranges, and went on to lead an unconventional life. At a time when travel was difficult and dangerous, Rowen ventured to remote and inhospitable parts of Australia in search of exotic flora and fauna to paint. Her quest also took her abroad, including New Zealand, the Himalayas, Europe, the United States, the Caribbean and Papua New Guinea. Despite the botanical subject and anatomical accuracy of her paintings, Rowan was not a botanical illustrator, preferring instead to paint decorative compositions of colourful and attractive flowers often presented in bunches or against scenery or sky. Rowan exhibited widely at intercolonial and international exhibitions in both Australia and internationally, beginning in 1873 when she was awarded a bronze medal for her painting of wildflowers at the Melbourne Intercolonial Exhibition. Despite achieving international acclaim, at home Ellis found herself caught between the worlds of art and science, her flower paintings deemed either too scientific or too decorative to be ‘fine art’. During her 50-year career, Rowan created more than 3,000 paintings and authored two publications, including a book of her travels A Flower-hunter in Queensland & New Zealand (1898). Flowering Eucalyptus was gifted to the Shepparton Art Museum in 1967 by The Lady Casey, an accomplished artist and writer and the niece of Ellis Rowan. 10.01.2022 Check out local sculptor Pete Rush’s latest work at Terrigal Lagoon. "The Reflection Weaver - half swan, half human in appearance - she works away under water,... weaving the reflections we see on the surface. She’s 4 metres tall & Pete says there’s a difference with this one. I made it in Mac’s lagoon but it kept falling over in the mud so I dismantled it and relocated to Terrigal lagoon - constructed it around a concrete post. Pete Rush

04.01.2022 WHAT IS GOUACHE PAINT? Gouache is a watermedia that can be used like watercolor. It's a mix of natural or synthetic pigments, water, and gum arabic (or in less... expensive brands, yellow dextrin) that acts as a binding agent to hold the paint together. Chalk is sometimes added to give the paint extra heft or body, and certain varieties add propylene glycol as well; traditional gouache tends to become brittle when it dries, and the extra additive attracts water to help paint layers stay more flexible over the long term. I use gouache on watercolor paper and any other surface suitable for watercolor. Like watercolor, gouache is water soluble and can be cleaned up with water. As with watercolor, you can rewet gouache with water to make alterations or thin it with water to make it more transparent. A BIT OF ITS HISTORY: Gouache painting has been around for more than a thousand years (the term gouache dates back to at least the 18th century). But even further back in ancient Egypt, colorful pigments were bound together with honey and other binders to create an early form of gouache, and by the middle ages, Persian artists were using a rudimentary form of gouache to decorate their famously beautiful Persian Miniature paintings. In the 15th century, Albrecht Durer relied on the matte finish of early gouache to give his paintings a soft glow, and in the 18th century, François Boucher used the paint to capture the pastel colors of his famous The Birth and Triumph of Venus. By the 19th century, gouache began to be produced industrially. It became quite popular with landscape artists because of its fluid and adaptable nature. These days it seems to be a less well known or used medium. Sometimes it is mistaken for children's poster paint. Which seems strange to me, as it is quite pricey. But anyway I think it is a great medium to use and I absolutely love it. I hope my creations do it justice.

04.01.2022 Upcoming Exhibition at the Rain Moth Gallery Rapt in Reptiles October/November 2020... Students of the Waikerie Primary School have been busy putting the finishing touches to their artwork which will be on display at the Rain Moth Gallery in Waikeire from 30th September through till the end of November. The exhibition titled Rapt in Reptiles will feature over 250 pieces of mixed-media works higlighting reptiles of the Riverland. Birds and mammals usually rate highly as preferred subjects of artwork but in this exhibition each class has focussed their work on one aspect of local reptiles, their habitiat with hints on how to make a reptile friendly habitat in your own back yard. Snakes, frogs, turtles, lizards and geckos and reptile predators using paint, ceramics, collage and textiles have all been used to make this a creative and colourful display. Visiting the gallery during the second week of the school holidays will be one of the must do activities for both children and adults. A number of interactive activities will be availble to make this a real learning experience, as the gallery is also a learning destination site for those students involved in the Children’s University programme. School groups in the Riverland are welcome to make a class booking for Term 4 by contacting the Rain Moth Gallery. Opening Hours: Monday- Friday 10:30 am 2.30 pm Saturday 10:00 am -1:00 pm [email protected] ph 0435 648 282
