14.01.2022 Current Development Application has been submitted for a 13 storey development comprising 20 units at 1 Petrie Street, Coolangatta. The site of the old "Rainbow...'s End" building on the corner of Marine Parade and Petrie Street. It is to be called "Flow". If you wish to review the submission the Development Application number is MCU/2020/83 - 1 Petrie Street Coolangatta. http://pdonline.goldcoast.qld.gov.au//modules/common/defau (link below) Apparently the application is a 'Code Assessable’ development, as it is considered to meet certain City Plan requirements, and therefore it is not required to be publicly advertised. GCCC Traffic have apparently no issue with two car spaces being utilised on Marine Parade to provide an entrance for the development. Current access is on Petrie Street. The information FORBS is highlighting to those interested in Rainbow Bay and its future, is that this development as is, does not need to be publicly advertised. Irrespective of whether your are supporting or objecting to this project, the question remains: should a development of this magnitude be publicly advertised (i.e. Impact assessable)? Readers are urged to review the plans, and if concerns are raised to write to Council outlining your response. Regarding Development Application MCU/2020/83 - 1 Petrie Street Coolangatta Dale Dickson CEO City of Gold Coast PO Box 5042 GCMC QLD 9729 [email protected] Email and/or call the Division 14 Councillor on: [email protected] Phone: 07 5581 5275

12.01.2022 17 Reasons we should bring light rail into Coolangatta and our airport. Number 3 is the best. I normally stay out of politics but this is an issue I believe in... very strongly as I want to help create a good future for my kids and future generations. I was very surprised to hear the policies of our two Local Council candidates in terms of our transport and green future. The existing Councillor Gail O'Neill supports light rail into Coolangatta and heavy rail to the airport as soon as possible. The other Division 14 council candidate is Gloria Baker said she does not want light rail and instead wants to build a high rise parking station in Coolangatta adding more cars into our town. I have 17 reasons why I support light rail into Coolangatta and I think it's very important for our sustainable future. 1. We should be striving for net zero emissions by 2050. We should therefore be aggressively seeking alternatives to putting more polluting cars on the road and into Coolangatta. We cannot achieve this goal without solving our transport emissions. 2. Australia ranks at the bottom of the pack when it comes to transport emissions - see the infographic photo from the climate council. We should be supporting getting cars off the road and connecting our coastal towns via light rail. You can read more about this issue from the Climate Council link. https://www.climatecouncil.org.au//09/FactSheet-Transport. 3. When I was in Bilbao Spain I saw the most beautiful green version of a light rail system. The power lines were hidden in a tree canopy and the surrounds all lawn instead of concrete. I've included some pictures from Bilbao in my post here. I would love to see a green version of the light rail like they did in Bilbao to enhance the amazing beauty of the Southern Gold Coast and provide an epic welcome to visitors from the airport. Imagine a tree lined avenue like this down through Palm Beach and Currumbin. Any light rail should make the area more beautiful in my opinion. 4. Light rail emits 97% less greenhouse gases than cars. Emissions for different forms of transport Average emissions per kilometre (gCO2 /km) Metro train systems. 3-21 (per person) Light rail 4-22 (per person) Average car sold in 2015 842 !!!!! Source: www.climatecouncil.org 5. When you visit the best cities around the world you don't need a car. All the good things in other great cities can be accessed via train or walking and everyone, rich or poor, uses the trains unlike our existing poor and unreliable bus service and road network. 6. There already exists a rail cutting behind the Cooly police station for light rail to be located so it would not create any further transport or traffic issues 7. The main access into Coolangatta, especially through Kirra, is already gridlocked on most sunny weekends. We don't need or want more cars in town. 8. Our local businesses cannot afford to be cut off and isolated from the rest of the Gold Coast. It is hard to do business in Coolangatta and our customers from up north always complain about transport access especially getting home. We will be the only major tourist centre without access to the Gold Coast light rail system if the light rail is blocked and it will be very hard to remain relevant or competitive against Burleigh and our northern neighbours. 9. As a local business owner one of our biggest issues is trying to get our staff to work. Many of our casuals and students can't afford a car and try and use the existing bus system. It is a complete nightmare for them and us often causing staff to arrive late due to the massive congestion on the Gold Coast Highway. 10. The light rail doesn't get stopped by heavy traffic or car accidents. Buses do. 11. Our staff who have cars are also often late due to blockages on the M1 or GC Highway. That road is an absolute joke. 12. Whenever a major event or festival happens in town there are no viable mass transport systems in Coolangatta. We end up with 200 odd buses parked across the street from Komune and all our roads blocked off. Instead of event guests coming to businesses before and after the event they are herded on to buses, spend no money in town, leaving businesses with losing money due to the disruption. Major events are very important for businesses and should add value not cause losses. The main issue causing us and police problems with events is lack of effective transport. 13. We should be trying to get cars out of town via light rail not build a massive ugly high rise parking station to make traffic congestion into town worse. 14. The Gold Coast light rail took 1 million passenger trips off the Gold Coast congested roads last year and it only connected half of the Gold Coast. That is a lot of potential road congestion removed from the GC road network. 15. When the trains are full you add another train. When a road is full you spend one or two years of massive disruption building an extra lane. Usually when that work is done the road is full again as we have sees on the M1 construction site for 20 years in a row. 16. It is completely not fair that Coolangatta and our airport should be blocked from accessing the green future of transport that will be enjoyed by the rest of the Gold Coast. 17. Our kids can get home safely and cost effectively from a big night out in Surfers. Our elderly and disabled will benefit greatly from a easy to use light rail system. I'd be interested to hear comments if anyone else supports building a green version of the light rail from Burleigh down to Coolangatta. Opposing views welcome too. Please share

01.01.2022 Annual Surfing Santas and Inflatable Toys Event is due Sunday 20 December. It will go ahead depending on Surf Lifesaving and GCCC directive on whether or not the beaches are open due to recent weather events. If Rainbow Bay beach is open on Sunday the event will go ahead as planned (see Rainbow Bay SLSC event page for details). If the beach is closed on Sunday, it will need to be cancelled.
