13.01.2022 Every year a local talent has the chance to do the opening of the Tour of Small Halls. Wednesday 25th November, at 6.30pm: Meet Joel Mak "Born in November 1980 in Sydney but moved up to the Gold Coast in '84! Growing up with a great family which exposed me to great music, and a love for the ocean, family and friends. I got a guitar when I was 5 but was left handed and dad didn’t know how to teach me. I used to play around with open tuning and making my own ways to make sounds.... So I first started learning how to play upside down on right handed guitars, then switching to a left handed guitar in high school where I had a garage sale selling toys to fund my first electric guitar: an onyx / fender strat replica which I still have today." Although Joel was heavily into drums all through his teens and played in bands in school with mates inspired by Metallica, AC/DC, Guns & Roses, Tool, the Tea Party etc "Being in bands was great times and I enjoyed the energy you can create in a room with good mates, and the sounds that follow" Nonetheless, he always had the guitar in his hands, and also started writing songs from the age of 15. When he travelled to Canada in 2005 it was the first time he played guitar and sang up front. By then he already had an array of originals songs to showcase in bars in Alberta at jam nights and singer songwriter events. Joel moved to Rainbow Beach in 2010 as a Fraser Island tour guide operating out of the backpacker hostels which had bars .... which had entertainment; leading him to play gigs at every return from the Island. Word spread around and it wasn't after long that Joel was requested and invited to perform at every venue in town that provided live music. "Over the years I have built up my equipment and sound using live looping, beat boxing, multiple guitar effects, electric and acoustic guitars. Covering a range of covers and originals from Pink Floyd to Vance Joy, The Killers, etc I like to put my own spin on covers, create layers of sound with my looping pedal and effects and sometimes mash up a number of songs in one medley" Joel will open the Tour of Small Halls at 6.30pm, Wednesday 25th November. Please watch this space as we might be able to reopen the tickets sale soon!
