19.01.2022 This time last year, we were evacuating, and it was painful to know that the forests around our homes were full of animals that would not make it if a fire came through. This year, we are having a much moister spring, and last week, these Darlings were spotted. The baby looks quite mature, and whilst we can't see the Mama's eyes (this pic is quite zoomed in), which often show signs of chlamydia, they seem to be in good health. What a blessing! Sad that something that typically flowers in the beginning of September, was already budding through late July. Whilst waiting (outside) the post office recently, I met a man who whilst we discussed the pros and cons of corona times, declared he was a #climatechange denier. 14.01.2022 Hows #plasticfreejuly going for you? Did you know Rainbow Chai products mostly come in brown paper bags & recycled cardboard boxes? We also use 100% biodegradable cornstarch teabags, which are about to change to sugarcane teabags ( created as a byproduct of the sugar industry). And - when we are shipping out to you, dont be surprised if it comes in a box thats been recycled, as we like to re-use wherever possible. There is cellophane (biodegradable cellulose) involved in... the teabag boxes, but weve also managed to recently reduce that to only one layer, on the inside of the box. Weve also done away with the teabag tag, as really, theyre not necessary to make a good cuppa, are they? Less paper, glue and ink being used without them... We do have one product that is so, errr... aromatic that it requires a plastic inner bag - our Spiced Dandelion to stop the whole shop from smelling like Dandelion. If you have any ideas about reliable, small, zip lock bags that we could use to replace the plastic, wed love to hear about it. 12.01.2022 Rooibos, translating to 'Red Bush' is high in antioxidants (look out free radicals!), and low in tannins - so it doesn't hinder the bodies ability to absorb iron, particularly those derived from plant based foods, so is a good tea for vegetarians... It tastes deliciously nutty, earthy, & full flavoured.. Zero calories means it's good for weight loss, & according to a 2014 study, rooibos tea may also benefit weight management by increasing levels of leptin. Leptin is a hormo...ne that helps regulate food intake, sending signals to the body that it has had enough. Rooibos also stopped the formation of new fat cells & encouraged quicker fat metabolism. Currently, there is some progressive movements towards recognising the role that the local indigenous people and their traditional knowledge played in the development of the 100 yr old industry. There has been a landmark benefit-sharing agreement made with the Khoi & San peoples, awarding them an annual traditional knowledge levy for each kilogram of harvested tea. This is awesome and considered a landmark not only because it acknowledges the indisputable contribution made by traditional knowledge holders towards the industry, and therefore also with other traditional plants & remedies across the African continent, but also because it is restorative justice in action & could bring significant material benefits to indigenous San & Khoi people, many of whom remain marginalised & impoverished. It all stems from the UN Biodiversity Convention. Of course, it's complicated, & there are many things to be sorted out and systems to be established, but it is definitely a move in the right direction. Non-monetary benefits are also being explored & could include the creation of employment opportunities, bursaries, development schemes, mentoring & livelihood development opportunities. We believe it's so important to get these 'benefit-sharing' acknowledgments in place! Bring on the New World! #ethicaltea #newworld #rooibos
