22.01.2022 Happy NAIDOC Week Australia! Rainbow Families Qld sends special love and respect to all our First Nations parents.

21.01.2022 It’s been a big week. Yesterday a Bill was introduced into the ACT parliament to make it against the law for anyone to try and change someone’s sexual orientati...on or gender identity AND the Queensland parliament passed a Bill that will outlaw conversion practices by health service providers. The Queensland Government will allocate funding for an integrated education and research project which will, among other things, identify appropriate supports for survivors. These developments follow a commitment made by the Victorian Premier to outlaw conversion practices, and the South Australian Labor Opposition signalling it will introduce a private members bill later this year. The Tasmanian Law Reform Institute is also conducting an inquiry into possible legislation in Tasmania. There have been many positive steps, but we need more action to make sure these damaging practices are stamped out once and for all. Can you take a minute to sign the petition and tell our leaders that LGBTQ+ people deserve to live their lives without harm or fear that they need to be fixed and end harmful LGBTQ+ conversion? https://equalityaustralia.org.au/endconversionpractices/

18.01.2022 It’s International Pride Day and marks 52 years since the Stonewall Riots sparked a world-wide LGBTIQ protest movement. Here in Australia that protest movement led to the Marriage Equality rallies of 2017. This photo is taken from the Brisbane rally held on 10 September 2017. People of all ages came together to show support for marriage equality. We celebrate their victory along with commemorating the Stonewall Riots today on International Pride Day. 15.01.2022 reposted from Trans Pride Australia: Trans Pride Australia are reaching out to you - our community, friends, families, lovers, allies and all that believe in equality and respect. We are dealing with a dangerous problem. Mark Latham has introduced The Education Legislation Amendment (Parental Rights) Bill 2020; a bill that will impact every LGBTIQ+ student in NSW, denying their existence and denying the teachers and school support staff including councillors the right to supp...ort and prepare students to live their best possible life. Below is a letter TPA has sent to the Premier, Deputy Premier, Education Minister, Opposition Leader, and Shadow Education Minister requesting they stop this harmful Bill. What can you do to help? We are asking you to step up and send you opposition to this bill through Equality Australia. https://equalityaustralia.org.au/ignoranceineducationbill/ See more

10.01.2022 FIGHT THE STIGMA Both men and women suffer from toxic masculinity. It happens every day, both online and offline. Sometimes it is taught, and sometimes it is learned through observation. That is why we must learn about it. What does toxic masculinity look like? Here are some examples.

08.01.2022 Lounging by the hotel pool after a hot but also very heartwarming Brisbane Pride, the four year old approaches a person in the jacuzzi and says we’ve just been to the Rainbow Families festival. When the four year old didn’t get much of a response he asked in surprise, Are you straight?? And was amazed when the person answered yes, very. A cute story, but this is why it’s so important to take our kids to Pride and Rainbow Families Qld eventsit normalises their families and makes them so proud of them too!!

06.01.2022 Trans Awareness Week is a chance to take the time to celebrate the Trans and gender diverse community, but as allies it’s also our job to make sure we make time... to educate ourselves on the diverse trans experience and take real action to advocate for Trans lives. Today’s education resources are brought to you by TransHub who have just launched a new section to their award winning resource centre, TransHub101. This is your one stop shop for the LGBTIQ+ community, allies and health professionals seeking to better understand Trans identities and experiences. You can view their resource centre here: https://www.transhub.org.au/ The Trans community is strong and resilient. However, our community is strongest when we look after ourselves and one another. One of the most powerful things we can do as allies is take ownership of our continued education and understanding of the Trans experience. This small gesture can ensure that we are there for our community in the way they need it the most. While we understand there is a lot to celebrate this week, we also know that this time of year can be challenging for those in our community. If you are experiencing distress or unwelcome thoughts and feelings, we want you to know that there is always somewhere or someone to turn to. You can access these resources on our website. 05.01.2022 Christmas present idea for young adults: We found a book with a trans dad character! Melbourne writer Andrew McNamara has written a series of Middle Grade novels (for kids aged 8 to 12) called Sybilla Dankworth and her Unusual Uncles. It’s a humorous spy/adventure novel with code breaking and a focus on family. The lead character has two queer family members (one of her adopted dads is trans) but there is no coming out they are accepted and loved as part of the family.... Available at queer bookshops in Melbourne and Sydney and also online through The Bookshop Darlinghurst (Sydney). The store has a well-run postal capability. Link: https://www.thebookshop.com.au//sybilla-dankworth-and-her/ Sybilla Dankworth and her Unusual Uncles (Books 1 - 4) - The Bookshop Darlinghurst We’re only halfway through the first book so RFQ can’t vouch for all the content yet but it is confusing at the beginningif you start reading with the knowledge that she’s being raised by two adopted uncles who aren’t in a relationship, and that one of them is trans, it helps! There’s also a scene where the family get a visit from social services and the trans dad dresses up as a woman. We raised this with the author and he explained that the dad does this because he’s scared they’ll be transphobic but it turns out that they’re not at all. We don’t feel this is made clear so we suggest navigating this part alongside your child, but on the whole, so far it’s a positive representation of queer parenting.

01.01.2022 We're delighted to announce that the Brisbane City Council petition to ensure BCC continue to run Drag Story Time events at Council libraries and venues has been approved! Thank you to all our supporters for your work on this. In summary the Council has said: Drag Queen Storytime is one of hundreds of different events held in Council libraries each year that foster a diverse and inclusive city. Council remains committed to its values of inclusion, tolerance and diversity and ...will continue to offer Drag Queen Storytime in libraries as part of the range of events offered in response to community needs. Many many thanks also to the LGBTI Legal Service for their work for justice regarding the homophobic petitions that were lodged on the BCC Website regarding Drag Storytime earlier this year. Councillor Kara Cook gives a brilliant speech on this and in support of Rainbow Families Qld and Drag Storytime below. https://www.youtube.com/watch You can read the decision at: https://www.epetitions.brisbane.qld.gov.au/petiti//pid/814
