03.01.2022 Trial drug hope for Bella’s brain cancer (DIPG) Little Bella with a fatal form of brain cancer has been thrown a lifeline in the form of a trial drug Thanks to ...Dr Matt Dun, University of Newcastle NSW. In May, The Sunday Telegraph reported that Bella Howard’s family had raised $120,000 for Dr Charlie Teo to operate on her diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, a form of brain stem cancer that almost always claims children within 9 months. The tumour was mostly removed but three weeks ago an MRI revealed the tumour has enlarged 3 x in size diagnosed with just months to live. Hunter Cancer Researcher Dr Matt Dun, who’s daughter Josie lived a year longer than predicted on a combination of drugs has been instrumental in helping the family obtain the trial drug ONC201 from Germany, as it is not available in Australia. Bella will now trial ONC201, a drug that is still in the trial phase and not approved by any regulatory body. The drug costs about $1800.00 a week. The gofundme fundraiser and all fundraising support within our community has given Bella this amazing opportunity for the life-extending drug and we can’t thank everyone enough for all they have contributed to make this a reality This tumour has now taken Bella’s voice and mobility so to have the opportunity to reverse these side affects and prolong her life is nothing but a miracle. Dr Dun’s daughter Josie lived for an extra two years (doubled her predicted life expectancy with DIPG). She tragically passed away last December at the age of five. Since then Dr Dun has made it his mission to help other families obtain the life-extending drug, while he continues to work around the clock to find a cure. This week Bella will commence the trial drug ONC201 alongside radiation therapy over coming weeks. We will keep you informed on Bella’s progress and treatment journey and again are ever so grateful for everyone whom has contributed thus far.
