23.01.2022 It's #InternationalDayoftheTropics2021. Today (and always!) we want to celebrate the extraordinary diversity of the tropics while highlighting the unique challenges and opportunities nations of the Tropics face, especially Australia. By 2050, the tropics region will host most of the world's people and two-thirds of its children (United Nations). We must take good care of our land. ... What a great opportunity to spend some time investigating the state of our tropics today. Today, we want to encourage you to explore the ways in which you can help preserve Earth: https://www.rainforestrescue.org.au/get-involved/ . : Martin Stringer Film & Photography #WeAreTheTropics #TropicsDay

21.01.2022 #CritterCorner - Hello! We are a pair of Rose-crowned Fruit-Dove (Ptilinopus regina), also known as Pink Cap, Rose- or Red-crowned Fruit-Pigeon. We are small, colourful rainforest birds, growing up to 24 cm in length. You can find us in northern and eastern Australia, and in Indonesia we will generally be hanging out in coastal tall tropical and sub-tropical forests, particularly with dense vine growth and many fruiting trees. We feed in the canopy of the rainforest, mainly... in the morning or late afternoon, and we feed entirely on fruit from vines, shrubs, trees, and palms. We are thought to be locally nomadic as we follow the ripening of fruits. We swallow fruit whole - figs are our favourite! #FunFacts: We also use Camphor Laurel as a food source, and we take water from leaves or from dew (not from the ground). 19 to 25 Oct is Aussie Bird Count week! 10.01.2022 To help combat climate change we need to plant more trees, thus we need to birth more trees . And this is what we have been doing WITH YOUR HELP. Currently, Rainforest Rescue’s existing Nursery provides around 12,000 trees a year for planting. Together with other nurseries in the Daintree region, we are producing 30,000 new trees a year. This is not enough! If we are going to help mitigate climate change by drawing down more carbon, then we need to plant more trees - it... really is as simple as that - #TreesAreTheAnswer. WITH YOUR HELP, we will build the Daintree’s largest nursery that will ultimately produce 150,000 trees per year - that will provide for the replanting of almost 20 hectares of rainforest habitat every year! What's next? We need your support: https://www.rainforestrescue.org.au/build-a-new-nursery-fo/ . And we’ll keep you informed of how things are going, so make sure you sign up for our newsletter and stay connected on social media. : Martin Stringer Film & Photography
09.01.2022 #CritterCorner - Good day! I am a Macleay's fig-parrot (Cyclopsitta diophthalma macleayana), also known as a double-eyed fig-parrot. My family and I are the smallest parrots in Australia, with an average total length of about 14 cm (5 12 in). Majority of us are sexually dimorphic, with males having more red (less silvery and blue) to the face than the females. We are predominantly green with a very short tail, a particularly large head and bill, and red and blue facial marki...ngs. They call us double-eyed fig parrots because some of us have cheek patches that vaguely resemble eyes. Our favourite foods are figs, berries, seeds, nectar, and the grubs of wood-boring insects and unlike many other parrots (who usually use existing holes in trees for nests) we excavate our own nest cavities, usually in a rotten tree. If you hear a high-pitched, clipped, two or three-note zzzt-zzzt or zeet-zeet call in the forests of New Guinea, or along the tropical Australian coast, east of the Great Dividing Range, keep an eye out & you might just see me or one of my mates! 19 to 25 Oct is Aussie Bird Count week! 09.01.2022 #CritterCorner - Hoot hoooooo! How do you dooooo? We are Rufous Owls (or Ninox rufa, for the sciency folk out there). While there's not too many of us, we cover a fairly large area and can be found in Northern Australia, as well as parts of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. We're one of the larger breeds of owl, often growing up to 57cm in length, with a wingspan of up to 120cm, and we are nocturnal. People describe us as having rather shy and elusive natures, but beware, like ...many animals, we can become aggressive if we feel threatened. Our diet is extremely diverse, ranging from birds and insects to small mammals such as flying foxes. In some cultures, owls are considered to be 'dark' or 'evil', but some Australian Aboriginal tribes believe that we're the sacred spirits of women passed. Either way, there are stories about us dating back hundreds of years, as well as some amazing Aboriginal artworks depicting us! 19 to 25 Oct is Aussie Bird Count week! Head to aussiebirdcount.org.au for info on how to get involved. 08.01.2022 The Australian Medical Association (AMA) recently declared climate change a health emergency, reflecting similar positions taken by a growing list of peak medical bodies around the world (Source: The Conversation). This isn't just the emergency of survival (which is rather overwhelming on its own!) but also our mental health. From the extreme weather psychological distress and climate related displacement to the existential dread of climate change, we are experiencing incre...asing eco-anxiety as a community! Does this sound true to you as well?

04.01.2022 Many sci-fi movies lack truly alien characters, don't you think? It's common to see humanoid aliens in the movies, meanwhile our own planet is heavily populated with out-of-this-world creatures, like two-spined spider and Avella net casting spider, both of which call the Daintree Forest their home. Which of those two would you nominate for the next Alien or a Star Trek episode?
