17.01.2022 Have you heard of Marie Taglioni? It can’t be confirmed but Miss Taglioni is credited as the first dancer to perform on pointe. She debuted her pointe work danc...ing the lead in La Sylphides, a production created by her father for the Paris Opera Ballet in the 19th century. Her pointe shoes were nothing more than a modified pair of satin flats with a leather sole and binding the help the shoe hold it’s shape. The idea behind pointe work was that the ballerinas looked weightless and graceful skimming across the surface of the stage. If only they knew what we looked like in rehearsal! Pointe shoes have come a long way since Marie Taglioni’s performance but even imagining the strength, perseverance and training that went into dancing in those early shoes has given me a new found respect for the ballerinas that followed.
