05.01.2022 FUNDRAISING BIKE RIDE - FRIDAY 24th & SATURDAY 25th A group of intrepid (some might say crazy) members of CC Bikers dedicated their winter ride to raising funds towards raising the Cross in central Australia. After getting sponsors for their 780km round trip to Nundle (near Tamworth), the event attracted 18 riders & 4 passengers, making a total of 22 participants. They rode off at 8.30am from Tuggerah on the Central Coast under blue skies last Friday their route taking t...hem via Wyee, Mulbring and Morpeth to their first stop at Gloucester. On this part of the journey they encountered very strong cross winds, sometimes making it difficult to hold their line on the road particularly scary when approaching oncoming vehicles on a motorbike! At Gloucester the conditions deteriorated. When asked where they were headed, the lady at the servo said she’d just heard reports of sleet and heavy rain on the Thunderbolt Way. Not to be deterred the group put on the wet weather gear and headed off in what turned out to be a relatively warm 12 degrees. More wind, now rain and plummeting temperatures up Thunderbolts Way to the lookout at the top of the never ending climb, and it was now 6 degrees with an icy wind. Pushing on to Nowendoc then heading for Dungowan the thermometers hit 3 degrees with chill factor making it feel like minus 5. Continuing the riders next encountered the Port Stephens Cutting - a monocline downhill one-lane goat track which is difficult to navigate in good conditions. It had water gushing across every hairpin corner due to the downpour of 6 inches of rain in the area just before the riders got there! Finally, with fading light and the grace of God, the riders finally pulled into the Nundle Hotel. At last a safe haven with open fires that created a cosy refuge - we thank God for the adventure but especially for the safe arrival of all 22 CC Bikers (some who had never ridden in conditions like these before). By contrast, Saturday brought fantastic conditions, blue skies, no rain, and no wind though it was still very cold. Nundle is a typical little country town with friendly people and a real community feeling and nearby, the Hanging Rock Lookout provided spectacular views of the farms in the valley with mountains in the background. The return ride was far less challenging, winding through picturesque farming country to the New England Highway and Scone. From there it was homeward, via country back roads that connected with the Golden Highway, the Hunter bypass and eventually the M1 south. We congratulate all participants for their commitment to the ride, for persevering in difficult conditions and for their fundraising efforts. We will post the total when all pledges are received. Please enjoy the photos. See more
