From 5pm today, masks must be worn at all indoor locations in Victoria, not just on public transport and at supermarkets and shopping centres. Victorians can only have gatherings of 15 people in their homes, down from 30 people. Victoria is urging its citizens to come home from New South Wales, even those who are in the 'green zones' in regional NSW. There are now six active cases of locally acquired coronavirus in Melbourne. The three cases that were identified yesterday have all been linked to a restaurant at Black Rock, in Melbourne's south-east. See more

20.01.2022 GIPPSLAND COVID UPDATE 17th August There are two new cases of COVID-19 in Gippsland today, with both cases in Latrobe. Latrobe has 25 active cases, South G...ippsland has four, Baw Baw has six, Bass Coast has three and East Gippsland has one. There are no reported active cases in Wellington. Victoria has recorded 282 new cases today. There have been 25 new deaths from COVID-19 reported since yesterday. Twenty-two of the 25 new deaths are linked to known outbreaks in aged care facilities. To date, 334 people have died from coronavirus in Victoria. 3626 cases may indicate community transmission, 7474 cases are currently active in Victoria, 657 cases of coronavirus are in hospital, including 44 in intensive care. 9023 people have recovered from the virus. The Victorian Government has extended the state of emergency due to the serious risk to public health posed by coronavirus. The declaration to extend the state of emergency will take effect immediately and go through until September 13 Another staff member at the Bupa aged care home in Traralgon has tested positive to COVID-19. In total, 16 people linked to the nursing home have become infected, in what is the biggest outbreak in Victorian aged care outside of Melbourne and Geelong. Bupa says the latest staff member to test positive had been isolating for the past 12 days. A resident of the Traralgon nursing home died of coronavirus last week. Lavalla Catholic college has closed both its Latrobe Valley campuses after two students tested positive for coronavirus. The students were last on site on August 3. Regional Victoria is now in stage three stay at home restrictions. The new restrictions will last until at least September 13 for all of Victoria. There are four reasons to be out: shopping for food and essential items. Care and caregiving. Daily exercise. Work and study if you cant do it from home. If you are leaving home for one of the four reasons, you can only undertake activities in public places with one other person or members of your household. You cannot have visitors to your home. You cannot make social visits to friends and family. Weddings can have a maximum of five people (the couple, two witnesses and the celebrant). Funerals will be restricted to 10 mourners plus people required to conduct the funeral. You can travel to attend a funeral. Places of religion and worship must close for both religious ceremonies and private worship, but people required to conduct and stream a service, can attend for these purposes. This is limited to up to five people. Hairdressing and barbers can operate. Density, cleaning, signage and record keeping requirements apply. Children in government schools have moved to remote and flexible learning and care. This means all students who can learn from home must learn at home. Onsite supervision will be offered for children whose parents are permitted workers, vulnerable kids who cant learn from home and children with a disability. Specialist schools remain open. Childcare and kindergartens remain open in regional Victoria Restaurants and cafes can continue to open for takeaway and delivery only. Food courts will close, but restaurants and cafes within food courts can open for takeaway and food delivery. Pubs, bars, clubs and nightclubs will be close. They can offer takeaway or home delivery of food and alcohol only. Bottle shops remain open. Indoor sports centres including gyms, training facilities and pools are closed. Community sport training and competition cannot occur. You can only exercise or undertake sporting activities outside with one other person or your household members. You must be able to keep at least 1.5 metres distance between yourself and others. You should exercise and use recreational facilities at the closest available location to your home. Masks are mandatory in regional Victoria. The penalty for not wearing a mask is $200. If you are driving alone, or only travelling with people from your household, you do not need to wear a face covering. Put your face covering on before you leave your vehicle. If you are driving with people for work, or people you dont live with, then you must wear a face covering unless you have a lawful excuse. You must wear a face covering if you are a passenger or driver in a taxi. If you are doing exercise or physical activity where you are out of breath or puffing, such as running, you do not need to wear a face covering. You do have to carry a mask with you so you can wear it before and after exercising, unless you have a lawful exemption. You must wear a face mask when walking for exercise even if the 1.5m physical distancing is maintained, unless you have a lawful excuse such as a medical condition, where it would be danger to have obstructed breathing while walking around. Children and people aged 12 years and older should wear a face covering. Children under the age of 12 do not have to wear a face covering but individual families can make their own decisions regarding their children. But children under two years should never wear a face covering due to choking and strangulation risks. If youre working alone on your farm and not coming into contact with other people, a mask IS NOT needed. If youre working on your farm with people who live in the same house as you, a mask IS NOT needed. If youre working on your farm alongside people who do not live in the same house as you, a mask IS REQUIRED. It is important that everyone with coronavirus symptoms, however mild, gets tested and must stay at home until they receive their test results. Those who test positive and their close contacts must isolate for 14 days. The most common symptoms of coronavirus are fever, chills or sweats, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose or loss of sense of smell. Travel between NSW and Victoria has closed. To travel from Victorian into NSW you need a permit. The only people not required to have a border permit are emergency service and law enforcement workers and people "entering NSW to avoid injury or escape a risk of harm". Gippslanders cannot enter metropolitan Melbourne except for necessary purposes including sourcing necessary goods or services; work and education if necessary; medical care or compassionate reasons. People living in Gippsland can travel to Melbourne for medical care and treatment and return home. Basically, youre allowed go down and see your doctor, specialist or dentist and to head straight back home when youre done. But make sure to carry documentation so you can show why you are travelling in case youre stopped. COVID-19 testing is based on the clinical symptoms which include any fever, chills or breathing problems, specifically cough, sore throat or shortness of breath. If you suspect you may have coronavirus call the dedicated hotline: 1800 675 398. If you are unwell: Self-isolate at home, do not go to public places, do not attend work, schools, universities or social gatherings during this period and do not visit aged care facilities. The cumulative number of cases in Gippsland is 98: Latrobe (46), Wellington (13), Baw Baw (14), Bass Coast (10), South Gippsland (12), East Gippsland (3).

13.01.2022 Naidoc Week celebrations will kick off in Sale this Sunday at The Wedge Loading Dock. In a partnership between The Wedge and the Gunaikurnai Land and Waters A...boriginal Corporation, the day will feature a Welcome to Country, followed by a special performance by Aboriginal rock band Black Satin. Black Satin is an Aboriginal rock band originally formed in 1976, by cousins Ricky Harrison, Nick Moffatt, Wayne Thorpe and Tony Hood. Iconic Aboriginal band ‘No Fixed Address’ was co-founded by Ricky and other students from the Centre for Aboriginal studies in Music in Adelaide in 1979. Nick joined up with NFA in the 80s and along with Ricky toured UK in the English summer of 1984. This year ‘No Fixed Address’ was honoured by the announcement by Adelaide City Council that a laneway will be named after ‘No Fixed Address’, along with a Mural and a plaque honouring band members. Along with the original members of the band was inducted into the Adelaide Music Collectives South Australian music ‘Hall of Fame’ in 2016 and the National Indigenous Music ‘Hall of Fame’ in 2011. Ricky and Nick reformed ‘Black Satin’ in 2018 and have been performing around Gippsland. Other band members include Sean Moffatt, Peter Hood. It will be the bands first performance in Sale since 1976. Nice to be able to perform again with Black Satin, great to have Sean Moffatt as a member, he played lead guitar on a couple of songs on my album ‘Birrark’ and was our lead guitar for ‘Bloodlines’ 1995-97. Sean is also a member of Melbourne band ‘Stray Blacks’. Peter Hood is our drummer and was a member of ‘Coloured Stone’ and ‘No Fixed Address’. Peter along with Nick was inducted into 2011 NIMA ‘Hall of Fame’. Sean and Peters experience alongside Ricky and Nick, in the music industry goes back many years. And the music generated by the band is reminiscent of the pioneering days of Aboriginal rock-reggae music. ‘A song I wrote back when I was 16 for Black Satin titled ‘The Vision’ was the first original reggae song that was performed by ‘No Fixed Address’ and featured on the movie sound track ‘Wrong Side of the Road’ 1981. It was the root song that started the Aboriginal reggae music revolution. Black Satin still performs the song today, more polished version with Nicks powerful vocal harmonies, Sean’s mystic overtures on lead guitar, and Peter brilliant drumming, breathing new fire into the alpha reggae number. Over the years we performed with many Australian and oversea’s acts Cold Chisel, Redgum, Men At Work, INXS, Goanna, and international acts Split Enz, The Clash, Ian Drury, Peter Tosh and Carlos Santana. Today there is a need for music facilities for community musicians in Gippsland to utilise such as rehearsal space, access to recording facilities, information and support in regard to music industry initiatives. It is something that band members are working towards establishing in the new year, a community music agency. This event is FREE with only 50 tickets available to be in our audience however, we will be live-streaming on our Facebook page for those who miss out on tickets or can't make it on the day. https://thewedge.com.au//naidoc-week-celebration-black-sa/ GLaWAC Ramahyuck District Aboriginal Corporation- Sale WIN News Gippsland ABC Gippsland Gippsland Times Wellington Shire Council Munji Music #thewedgesale #naidocweek2020 #blacksatin

11.01.2022 Legendary Gippslander.... There is a new installation at the front gate of RAAF Base East Sale... a PC-9/A propeller painted by Gunaikurnai artist Alfie Hudson.... Alfie is a Gunaikurnai/Monaro man who hails from East Gippsland and was honoured to paint the propeller. The artwork was inspired by a Dreamtime story about the Southern Cross constellation where a female emu saves a young boy from drowning but the emu unfortunately died saving him. Alfie said the story is about sacrificing your life for others and that is what he sees the Australian Defence Force members prepared to do for others in the community. The artwork also features hand prints of East Gippsland veterans and base personnel, with poppies representing the stars of the Southern Cross. #lovegippsland Pix credit: ADF

07.01.2022 Mosquito reminder If you're heading out of the house, particularly to camp or fish at the beach, river or lakeside, make sure you know how to protect yoursel...f from mosquitoes. They can transmit serious diseases, including Ross River virus. Before you head out, take a few steps to Beat the Bite: Make sure you have fly screens. Purchase an insecticide product for extra protection. Use mosquito repellent containing picaridin or DEET. For kids, spray or rub it on their clothes rather than onto their skin. Remember to reapply after swimming - it's not water resistant. Wear loose-fitting clothing when you're outside, make sure it covers your arms and legs because mosquitoes can bite through tight-fitting clothes. Wear a loose hat, mosquitoes can often bite your scalp! Mozzie-borne diseases cause joint pain and stiffness, headaches, fever, rashes and fatigue.
