25.01.2022 Congratulations to this weeks Year of the Midwife Anne-Charlotte who is a tobacco midwife at Belharra Clinic in France. Let's learn a more about Anne-Charlotte: Hi Anne-Charlotte, what is your job title?... I'm a midwife and for the past year I've also been a tobacconist. I wanted to specialise in this discipline because I am very interested in the mechanisms of addiction. As part of this activity, I accompany pregnant women or women with a desire to become pregnant, as well as their entourage, to stop smoking and eradicate tobacco from the domestic sphere. I also sometimes receive couples on a PMA journey: smoking can be a brake on fertility, which is why we work together on this level. The last part of my job is to coordinate the multidisciplinary care of vulnerable patients (isolated or chronically ill). They are referred to me by their gynaecologist or liberal midwife and I take care of setting up a complete care pathway to accompany them during their pregnancy. At which Ramsay site do you work? 24.01.2022 COPING WITH CLAUSTROPHOBIA AND ANXIETY FROM WEARING A MASK Feeling anxious when faced with uncertainty is the bodys way of preparing us to respond to challenging situations. Wearing a mask is one such situation that can be a confronting experience, especially if they are not used to wearing a mask over a period of time. Steps that you can take to help alleviate your symptoms include:... Acknowledge your anxiety: Remind yourself: This is a normal reaction. Im not used to wearing a mask and Im finding this challenging. My body is responding in a way that it should be to keep me alert of any danger, perceived or real. Practice self-compassion: Speak to yourself as you would a loved one: I am here for you. You are not alone. Place your hand on your heart and breathe in and out with compassion while wearing your mask. Visualise on a place or moment that brings you calm. Make room for the cultivation of self-kindness and peace

20.01.2022 HOW TO AVOID BACK PAIN WHILE WORKING FROM HOME As we continue to adjust to new and flexible working environments, what is the best way to avoid back pain and injury? Posture Plus ... Poor posture puts stress on your back and can cause upper and middle back pain. - Try to stand or sit tall, keeping your back as straight as possible and balance your weight evenly on both feet. - Don't slump or slouch and keep your shoulders rolled back. - If you spend a lot of time at a computer, at home and at work, make sure the screen is at eye level, never below and not too far away so that you have to reach to it. Be Active No matter your exercise levels, it's generally good advice to stay as active as possible to promote back health and reduce the risk of developing problems. - If you're sat at a desk all day, get up and walk around or just shift your sitting posture as often as possible. - Take the stairs where possible. - Gardening, cleaning, and other household activities can help to increase your exercise levels while still being productive De-Stress Stress can make your pain feel worse. Learning ways to reduce your stress may result in reduced pain. You could try deep breathing and relaxation exercises or meditation.

18.01.2022 GREENSLOPES EMPLOYEE PRAISED FOR OFF-DUTY HEROICS A nursing student who works at Greenslopes Private Hospital is being praised for her compassion and quick thinking after jumping into action to help an elderly man who’d collapsed on a Brisbane footpath. 20-year-old Taylor Kett was driving home from a placement shift at Greenslopes Private Hospital in early September when she witnessed the drama unfold.... I saw this person on the ground and he was face down and there were two other people standing over him. I thought it would be a good idea to turn around and help, Miss Kett said. I tried to find his pulse but he wasn’t breathing. One lady was telling me not to touch him but I was thinking the airway is more important than the spine, I knew what I needed to do. Taylor performed CPR for approximately five minutes before the ambulance arrived, and asked bystanders to collect towels as the patient had suffered a lot of blood loss. She then continued CPR for another 20 minutes with three other people. It was such a different environment. I’ve done all this training but I’ve usually got all the senior nurses and doctors telling me what to do. This was different because I was the one in charge. But I had the confidence to know what to do, Miss Kett said. An Advanced Care Paramedic with the Queensland Ambulance Service praised Taylor for her outstanding conduct and said the case highlights the importance of CPR training. When we arrived Miss Kett was performing CPR on a gentlemen who had collapsed by the side of the road. There were multiple other bystanders on scene who Taylor kept calm, informed and gave direction to, the paramedic said. Taylor has clearly been taught well. She was cool, calm and collected throughout the incident. Unfortunately the patient passed away at the scene, however the paramedic said it serves as a reminder about the importance of initiating bystander CPR. Miss Kett completed an enrolled nursing course at TAFE and is currently in her second year of a nursing degree. She said she was grateful to learn from the amazing team of nurses and doctors at Greenslopes Private Hospital as part of her studies. They’re incredible and amazing. The whole team has been so supportive, it’s just such a nice group of people to work with. Miss Kett said the incident had reinforced her passion for nursing and she was hoping to move into paediatrics or midwifery when she graduates in late 2021.

17.01.2022 NURSES: MAKE THE DIFFERENCE FOR DIABETES The theme of World Diabetes Day 2020 is The Nurse and Diabetes. The campaign aims to raise awareness around the crucial role that nurses play in supporting people living with diabetes. As the number of people with diabetes continues to rise across the world, the role of nurses and other health professional support staff is becoming increasingly important in managing the impact of the condition. Nurses are often the first and sometimes ...only health professional that a person interacts with and so the quality of their initial assessment, care and treatment is vital. Nurses play a key role in: - Diagnosing diabetes early to ensure prompt treatment. - Providing self-management training and psychological support for people with diabetes to help prevent complications. - Tackling the risk factors for type 2 diabetes to help prevent the condition

16.01.2022 OLYMPIC STAR INSPIRES RAMSAY STAFF ON R U OK? DAY Olympic swimming champion Brooke Hanson OAM has praised the amazing work of Ramsay Health Care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, as part of an inspiring webinar to mark R U OK? Day. The national day of action encourages Australians to ask friends, family and colleagues R U OK? if someone in their world is struggling with lifes ups and downs.... Ms Hanson told the hundreds of Ramsay staff who joined the webinar, it was important people take time out for themselves and celebrate their small achievements, not only the big ones. You have all gone above and beyond during this COVID-19 pandemic and youve done so much for our country, Ms Hanson said. You wont always get credit but know that you are loved and supported by so many Australians and we wouldnt have gotten through this without you. So many times youve done fantastic things at work but you may not take time out with colleagues to pat yourselves on the back and say well done. You really need to reach out to each other and celebrate - it can just be as simple as saying hey, well done. Ms Hanson, an Olympic gold and silver medallist, world champion and former world record holder, delivered an inspirational hour-long presentation, where she spoke of the immense challenges she has faced - not only in pursuing her sporting dream but also in her private life, with the loss of her second child Jack at just nine months old. There have been times where I havent been ok, the 42 year old said. I held my son Jack for his last breath and it showed me how precious and short life can be. Id give all my Olympic achievements, all those medals, away if I could have just one more cuddle with my little man. We had to say goodbye to him and that was the saddest day of my life, Ms Hanson said. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well. Were all going to struggle with mental health at some point and we all have to conquer and support each other. Its why R U OK? Day is so important. Ms Hanson spoke of the importance of self-love and self-care - which included a healthy diet, exercise and getting plenty of sleep. Its one of those magical things, exercise, healthy living and eating can make a big difference, she said. The link to Ms Hansons powerful webinar will be available to the Ramsay workforce on the intranet to watch at a time convenient for them. She has also written a book, When Silver is Gold, with all profits from the sale of each copy donated to Lifes Little Treasures Foundation in memory of her son Jack.

16.01.2022 Ramsay Australia’s Chief Information Officer, John Sutherland, has topped the list of Australia’s top 50 senior technology and digital executives. The CIO50 List celebrates stories of innovation and leadership from tech leaders who work at organisations in both the public and private sectors in Australia. John has earned the number one spot for 2020 due to his creation of a high-performance culture that supports Ramsay’s workforce to provide high quality patient care.... In 2020, he has led the IT team to: Collaborate with departments and influence positive outcomes at Joondalup Health Campus when the facility accepted COVID-positive patients from a cruise ship off Western Australia. The IT group helped to establish a pop-up testing clinic, provide remote access to systems in COVID sections and assisting to reconfigure other areas of the hospital. Improve operational performance, with an 18 per cent improvement on resolution of incidents, and 75 per cent of support calls answered within 10 seconds. Develop a COVID-19 smartphone screening tool to check hospital visitors for exposure to the virus. The multilingual tool was used to screen more than 100,000 people every week. Create a virtual waiting room to reduce crowded waiting rooms and therefore risk of infection in hospitals. This allows patients, once they have filled out their paperwork, to leave the facility until they receive a text or phone call that it is time to return for admission. Deploy a suite of virtual healthcare services including online education classes and programs to allow Ramsay employees and doctors to continue providing treatment to patients and customers. We would like to acknowledge the work of John and his whole team throughout 2020 and thank them for their ongoing support to all of our departments during a challenging year.

15.01.2022 25 years ago three smaller mental health facilities, came together under Ramsay Health Care’s founder, Paul Ramsay, and Albert Road Clinic was born. Albert Road Clinic has been built on the foundation of people caring for people, providing world class mental health care, for not only our local community but for people from all over the country. Today, we are one of Melbourne’s largest private mental health facilities.... Over the past 25 years, we have expanded, and continue to provide programs and services that are contemporary, evidence based and tailored to meet our patient’s needs. Albert Road Clinic wouldn’t be where it is today, without our many dedicated staff and doctors. They have shown commitment to working together to achieve positive outcomes for our patients and embody The Ramsay Way in the way they conduct themselves each and every day. I have been fortunate enough to witness this culture, with admiration, as the team came together and rose to the challenge of COVID 19. Not only did we support our Ramsay colleagues and some of the most vulnerable members of our community, we still provided world class support and care for our own patient community. - Petra Glare CEO of Albert Road Clinic

12.01.2022 Congratulations Andrea! This week, Year of the Nurse What is your job title? I am a registered nurse in the operation theatre.... At which Ramsay site do you work? The Central Surgery in Hong Kong. For how long have you worked at Ramsay? More than one year, since April 2019 What is your favourite thing about being a nurse/midwife? The best part of being a nurse is the interaction with different patients who come along with different ages, symptoms and backgrounds, seeing people from all walks of life and sharing their stories. What I found intriguing is to listen and discuss with patients about their nervousness before the forthcoming surgery, thereby relieving their stress and tensions and get their smile back on the face. What are you passionate about? I am enthusiastic about learning new skills and seeking new knowledge. It is no doubt that we are fully immersed in the fast-changing world, and healthcare is one of the most rapidly changing industries. As being a nurse, I think we need to stay hungry for knowledge with an open mind, in order to embrace the changes and address the problems of each day. What are your aspirations for the future? I hope to become a nurse anaesthetist in the future, as I have been looking for an advanced and high-stakes nursing specialty that will keep me on my toes. From the excitement of working in environments like the operation theatre to the level of professional autonomy, I believe working as a nurse anaesthetist fits me. In addition, I would always be keen to keep myself up to date with the latest knowledge. Moreover, I think it is very essential to stay true to my beliefs and share the passion and compassion with both our patients and colleagues.

09.01.2022 Theres more to say after R U OK? 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone and circumstances have made it even more important for us all to stay connected and, for those who are able, be willing to support those around us. You dont have to be an expert to keep the conversation going when someone says theyre not OK. By knowing what to say you can help someone feel supported and access appropriate help long before theyre in crisis, which can make a really positive difference to their life.

09.01.2022 Listen with an open mind If you are concerned about someone, trust your gut and ask, Are you OK?. Listen with an open mind to what they have to say and ask them what you can do to help. In the current circumstances, there might be limits on what you can do but you can definitely be a listening ear and a (virtual) shoulder to lean on. Take what they say seriously and don't interrupt or rush the conversation.... Don't judge their experiences or reactions but acknowledge that things seem tough for them. If they need time to think, sit patiently with the silence. Encourage them to explain: "How are you feeling about that?" or "How long have you felt that way?" Show that you've listened by repeating back what you've heard (in your own words) and ask if you have understood them properly. https://rmsyhc.com/3jT3X6Y

09.01.2022 Encourage Action Ask: "What have you done in the past to manage similar situations?" Ask: "How would you like me to support you?"... Ask: "What's something you can do for yourself right now? Something that's enjoyable or relaxing?" You could say: "When I was going through a difficult time, I tried this... You might find it useful too." If they've been feeling really down for more than 2 weeks, encourage them to see a health professional. You could say, "It might be useful to link in with someone who can support you. I'm happy to assist you to find the right person to talk to." Be positive about the role of professionals in getting through tough times.

02.01.2022 CHECK-IN The coronavirus pandemic comes as many Australians are still feeling the impact of recent bushfires, floods and drought. Its very normal to not feel OK in challenging times such as these. Watching and listening to media and social media coverage and commentary can be confronting and confusing. However, at a time when were being asked to physically distance ourselves from one another, we can make use of freed up diary time and our digital devices to stay connected.... Pop a reminder in your diary to call them in a couple of weeks. If they're really struggling, follow up with them sooner. You could say: "I've been thinking of you and wanted to know how you've been going since we last chatted." Ask if they've found a better way to manage the situation. If they haven't done anything, don't judge them. They might just need someone to listen to them for the moment. Stay in touch and be there for them. Genuine care and concern can make a real difference.
