06.01.2022 With Australia in lock down, there has been an extensive increase to the amount of individuals who are now working from home. In response to this substantial spike, the federal government has made changes to the treatment of deductions which can be claimed for certain work expenses within your household. - Individuals can now claim 80 cents p/hour of all running costs. You can simply count the number of hours you have worked from home and multiply it by 80 cents come tax tim...e. - Multiple people living in the same house can all claim this rate, and you no longer have to have a designated 'work from home' area. - If it suits you better, you still have the choice of calculating the actual work-related amounts. This method will mean that you have to keep a more specific running track of all expenses such as office equipment, electricity, water etc. These figures will need to be proportioned for how much is being used towards work. Remember to keep any receipts for any work-related purchases made! If you bought a new desk or monitor because of your new working circumstances, you can claim it as a deduction. Be sure to familiarise yourself with these changes, as it could definitely help your tax position when it is time to lodge. If you would like to discuss your own home office and what is eligible to claim please be sure to book a virtual appointment and we would be more than happy to help! https://www.ato.gov.au//Me/New-working-from-home-shortcut/
