10.01.2022 IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR PRODUCERS USING HAY MADE FROM FAILED OR FROSTED CROP We have been informed that around a quarter of samples being tested through NSW DPI W...agga feed lab have high to extremely high levels of Nitrate present in cereal and canola hay. Some of the samples tested are coming in at deadly, and dangerous levels. Feeding hay with high Nitrate levels can be fatal to your livestock - Nitrate Poisoning is the result of animals consuming feeds with high Nitrates. Determining the level of Nitrate in your feed is crucial to determine if it is safe to feed on its own. Feed testing is the only way of finding this information out about your feed. Testing for Nitrates is an additional test to the usual feed test - but is excellent value for money ($25) given the possible adverse impacts if your hay is high in Nitrate. If your hay does return a level of Nitrate over the safe threshold, YOU MUST feed it out in a safe manner to avoid Nitrate Poisoning - this can be done most safely as a total mixed ration. Getting some advice on how to safely feed hay with nigh Nitrates is essential to avoid nitrate poisoning in your livestock Check out our website for webinar recordings on some of the key pieces of information that you need to know: - animal health considerations when grazing failed crops (nitrate poisoning is discussed) - interpreting feed test results - making drought or frost affected crops into hay https://sheepconnectnsw.com.au/tools/ KEY MESSAGE - test your hay, and if you are unsure of how to interpret the tests, speak to your trusted livestock advisor for advice. Develop a plan for safe use of the hay if it contains high Nitrates. Here is some useful information from NSW Department of Primary Industries about Nitrate Poisoning in Sheep http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au//nitrate-and-nitrite-poisoning-i PLEASE SHARE THIS INFORMATION Local Land Services NSW The Land ABC Rural ABC Western PlainsABC Central West RaynerAgGeoff Duddy NSW Farmers NSW Young Farmers Central Tablelands Local Land ServicesCentral West Local Land Services Northern Tablelands Local Land Services Western Local Land Services Riverina Local Land ServicesSouth East Local Land ServicesHunter Local Land ServicesNorth West Local Land Services
