24.01.2022 So I decided to let some fresh air in yesterday, opened the door and this happened... #birds #birdsofinstagram

23.01.2022 Tonights sunset @ Shipwreck Beach Harmers Haven... I took about 100 photos but this one, taken off the car park is just magical. True colours, no filter. Mindfulness for me happens most intensely when Im walking, during beach visits and when Im surrounded by nature. The meditative effect is amplified when I focus on the beautiful things I see and take photos of what truly inspires me... What helps you to self-reg, be mindful or meditate? ... #sunset #truecolours #nofilter #meditation #mindfulness #photography #selfreg

19.01.2022 So... I lay awake again last night... Pondering and wondering... And even in my sleep I was worrying about the state of the world & preparing a speech that I would give at a government level meeting why the bloody hell NOTHING WAS BEING DONE to support sustainability and to counter Climate Change. I researched and compiled evidence, chose my reasoning and my words consciously and carefully to make a passionate and compelling case to FINALLY TAKE ADEQUATE ACTION!!... And the I woke up. But then on second thought... Waking up to this reality where the Australian Government keeps on making decisions in favor of coal, engaging multi-million companies with no ecological interest at heart at all and seemingly never learning from their past mistakes with detrimental effects for fauna & flora locally and globally (but obviously not for their own wallets), is more like living in a perpetual nightmare! #notagoodstartoftheday #dreamingofchange #climatechangeisreal #takeactionnow #smallstepsbigeffects #eatlessmeat #sustainabilty

18.01.2022 E-Learning Hack: wear a glove for writing. We were struggling to write on the iPad without accidentally touching other parts of the screen. I had a brainstorm ...this morning and had my daughter put on a winter glove to cover her hand while writing. It solved our problem, so I wanted to pass it along in case other students are struggling. She is using the SeeSaw app. See more

18.01.2022 US-based, but oh so true. Suspension from education is NOT the way to go. ALL children CAN learn and WILL do well if they can. If they find learning hard and display behavioural difficulties, they need MORE support and an EFFORT to understand what is behind their behaviours... Exclusion is not supporting them in any way. ... CONNECTION and ENGAGEMENT is what helps children (and adults) thrive! See more

17.01.2022 ADMINISTRATIVE APPEALS TRIBUNAL REJECTS NDIS INDEPENDENT ASSESSMENT AN IMPORTANT PRECEDENT! "In a recent decision the Administrative Appeals Tribunal has commented on the NDIAs use of an independent assessor, stating this type of therapist is not appropriately qualified and that the assessors understanding was mistaken."... "The Tribunal noted that the opinions of the Independent Assessor were at odds with those allied health professionals who knew Mrs Ray and had carried out multiple assessments over an extended period, concluding that the Tribunal had: (lost) confidence that (the Independent Assessors) opinions were based on an accurate understanding of Mrs Rays background past achievements and her current state." http://www.villamanta.org.au//aat-rejects-ndis-independen/

09.01.2022 IMPORTANT!! The so-called sympathy bias of treating professionals... Makes me cringe... Maybe, just maybe... Those treating professionals are just really experienced in understanding and treating the complex challenges of specific individuals? The Tribunal thinks so...

08.01.2022 Some breaking news from the NDIA this afternoon ... The NDIA have just released the Functional Capacity Assessment Framework (phew thats a mouthful). This long... document gives some information about why the NDIA think independent assessments are a good idea. It also explains a little bit more about how and why they have selected the assessment tools they have. It is rather ironically titled - given that the NDIA have said the assessments wont just be about function. And yet thats what the framework is called? The NDIA says the framework has been developed with researchers, academics and allied health professionals. But not, as far as we are aware, with input from people with disability or their families. This is a very technical document and quite hard to get through. There is no Easy Read or plain English version available. So its going to take us a while. We will of course let you know what we find. We know many of you have so many questions and concerns about what independent assessments will mean for you. We share them - and we promise to keep taking them to the government and the NDIA. And that is not all we are doing - so stay tuned. In the meantime if you want to look at what has been released today you can find it on the NDIS website. But be warned because it is very hard going. You can read the media release here - https://www.ndis.gov.au//5260-ndia-releases-new-functional You can read the full framework here - https://www.ndis.gov.au//functional-capacity-assessment-fr The NDIA have also released some frequently asked questions about independent assessments. You can find them here - https://www.ndis.gov.au//inde/independent-assessment-q-and (Image description: A red rectangle with the words "Breaking News" in white capital letters. Underneath the words you can see the Every Australian Counts logo and the words "NDIS: Make It Work)

05.01.2022 YOU NEED TO BE SEPSIS AWARE! Please SHARE to SAVE LIVES! I wish every Australian to know about SEPSIS and how SNEAKY and SPEEDILY it KILLS.... SEPSIS KILLS more than 4 TIMES the number of people than road traffic accidents. Almost 9000 deaths/year. 55 000 people in Australia develop SEPSIS each year. Amazingly, 40% of Australians havent even heard of SEPSIS! I have debated so much about sharing this photo of Mia on life support. It is shocking. It is distressing. It is difficult to share. It is very, very difficult to remember. I am extremely sorry to the friends we have made through sepsis that will find this difficult. However, I feel such a strong need to save others from going through what we have and I am hoping this will help. On the evening of Sunday 15th October, 2017, Mia almost lost her life to Sepsis. Her organs were shutting down. Her heart stopped. I screamed out to Pete in ICU and we stood by helplessly watching the medical team pummel her chest to keep her with us. It was hell. It was a nightmare. Mia was on life support for 6 days. She made it. But not all parts of Mia survived. Her hands and feet didnt receive blood supply. They darkened, gradually blackened and shriveled. How did this happen to our beautiful little 4 year old who was healthy just days ago? Our Mia is now a quad amputee. Just 2 days prior, on Friday 13th October, near dinner time, Mia threw up and had a temperature. We put her to bed thinking she had gastro. The following morning Mia was sicker than wed ever seen her so we took her to a GP. She couldnt stand from muscle pain and I wheeled her in a stroller. She was diagnosed with gastro and sent home to rest. By Saturday afternoon Mia was incoherent and disorientated. Although her eyes were open, she wasnt responding to our questions and was unable to focus on us. This was very scary so we took her straight to the hospital emergency department. Mia was complaining about severe pain stopping her from putting weight on her legs and again put in a stroller. She was diagnosed with Influenza and sent home to rest. On Saturday evening we were still worried, and after carrying her to the toilet we were particularly concerned by how much pain Mia had in her legs. We called the hospital again hoping to speak to the doctors who had seen her, however we were transferred to an over-the phone medical service. After talking to the nurse, we were still worried but Mia hadnt shown any new symptoms since her hospital visit. We checked on Mia every two hours that night, prodding her a little to verify she was still responsive with a plan that if we saw any sign of the incoherence or new symptoms we would take her back to hospital. On Sunday morning, Mia didnt seem any better, but she didnt seem any worse either. We concluded that with the flu, Mia just needed rest so we set her up in front of the TV for a lazy day. We would go to check on her often and ask: How are you doing Mia? and each time she would respond: Im ok. When we checked on Mia late Sunday afternoon we noticed a light purple rash on her legs. I am forever thankful that Mia wasnt wearing long trousers, as I would have missed the rash and put her to bed. She shares a room with her older sister, Ellie, who would have found her dead the following morning. When we saw the rash we immediately took Mia back to hospital. Upon arrival I was told our daughter was very very unwell and she deteriorated rapidly. We are extremely fortunate that Mia is here with us and I am thankful beyond words. She is an amazing child. She is beautiful, cheeky, friendly, compassionate and clever. She has adapted extremely well to being a quad amputee over the last 3 years. She impresses us and everyone around her daily. But, this could have been avoided had we known to ask "COULD THIS BE SEPSIS?" when we visited the GP and emergency department at hospital. It could have been avoided and treated easily had it been picked up earlier. xxxxx #sepsiskills #worldsepsisday #coulditbesepsis #silentkiller #sepsisawareness #quadamputee #sepsissurvivor

02.01.2022 It's done! Every morning in the early hours for the last 2 weeks I've spent time carefully putting together the folders with tools and materials for our yearly online parent coaching workshop "The BODY-EMOTION-ACTION connection" So happy to see the results paying off! Last year (2020) I was developing the course materials while giving the workshop... Partly because originally the plan was to have a face to face workshop series at our clinic... But obviously things changed... due to C-19. Participants were sent parts of the materials regularly as we went along. This year all the foundational materials were ready and for the first time since starting this workshop series, participants will get these beautiful folders with print-outs for all the webinars and additional materials for individual follow-up & group check-ins as total package. An easy reference tool for ongoing use in the future... These beauties will mailed out to our 12 workshop participants today, so they're set up for success to embark on this self-reg coaching journey with us... That's a whopping almost 20kgs in total of learning materials going into the mail today!! #selfreg #parentcoaching #occupationaltherapy #workshop #online #basscoast #rainbowsandowls
