23.01.2022 Randwick Council's new Environment Strategy getting a write up in the Tele. We're slashing emissions by 60% by 2030, aiming for 40% tree canopy cover and much m...ore. Randwick council is stepping up and providing strong leadership on the environment. "Randwick Council has revealed an ambitious 10-year environmental strategy which pledges to slash greenhouse gases by 60 per cent. The plan, which councillors voted in favour of earlier this month, is broken down across four key areas: biodiversity conservation, climate change, conservation of natural resources and coastal protection. The main objective of the biodiversity conservation category is to increase the number of native plantings across the area by 60% by 2030. Additionally, council has pledged to maintain 14,000m2 of native flora and cut back weeds by 10% in areas where there is Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub by 2025. The council‘s second major focus is climate change, with an ambitious target to reduce greenhouse gas by 60% by 2030. To achieve this council has said it will work with businesses, community organisations, RSLs and schools to install solar panels. Additionally all existing street lights will be switched over to LED lights (4,000) by 2022 and there will be a push to increase solar panels across Randwick households by 20 per cent. The council will also embark on a major tree planting drive with a goal to increase the number of trees planted by 25% by 2025 and 50% by 2030. This is compared to planting numbers in 2018. There are two main objectives under the conservation of natural resources category. The first is to increase residential recycling to 70% and divert 75% of waste from landfill by 2025. The second is to reduce Randwick’s energy and water use by 30% by 2030. The council intends to achieve these dual objectives by amongst other things trialling new recycled materials for roads and creating a 2 million litre stormwater harvesting system at Maroubra beach. In a bid to reduce food waste to landfill the council will introduce a domestic food waste collection service next year. The Food Organics, Garden Organic Bin (FOGO) will be collected weekly and will include food scraps including bones, fruit and veg peel, pasta and tea bags among much more. The fourth and final category is coastal protection. The council has pledged to participate in all water quality surveys conducted by NSW Government’s Beachwatch Water Quality Program, and gain positive results. It will also aim to ensure community satisfaction of the coastal experience is above 80% in surveys. To achieve this, work will be carried out on the stormwater system and Gross Pollutant Trap (GPT) to stop more nasties before they make their way into the ocean. The council has also pledged to control access to some of the Randwick’s most precious areas by constructing a coastal pathway along the southern golf courses and Lurline Bay by 2030. In the first year alone the council will put $4.7m towards achieving the targets. Deputy Mayor and Greens councillor Philipa Veitch welcomed the strategy and said the time to act is now. I really do believe that the issue of climate change is very much on people‘s minds, she said. It’s been very interesting to see the sort of change in council since last summer. I believe you couldn’t avoid the reality that we are experiencing very significant climatic change. She also said more must be done to help create a circular economy, a regenerative system aimed to minimise waste and continue the use of resources. Citing the planned waste-to-energy incinerator at Matraville, she said: These types of facilities require large amounts of waste to burn, to create the energy. So, the move towards a circular economy is something that‘s very important to our residents. Labor Cr Dylan Parker also welcomed the strategy but said the public must play their part. Dylan Parker, candidate for central ward of Randwick Council Labor Like all things, there will be change, whether it‘s sorting out your waste, choosing more eco-friendly options, or even planting more trees in the local area, it’s not all take. Sometimes it will involve a little bit of give. Cr Parker said. He added: Our community puts a lot of emphasis on Randwick doing their bit for the planet, and this is just one small step in the right direction. Like all strategies in order to be successful they need to be achievable, the environment strategy is ambitious, but I reckon we will get there. Cr Parker said one of the most important aspects of the plan was to drastically increase the numbers of trees planted in the area. He said: Randwick has historically had one of the lowest tree canopy cover in Sydney, a big emphasis will be planting more trees to get us up to other parts of Sydney such as the leafy north shore. This will be one major focus of that environment strategy.

15.01.2022 Very exciting to see work starting on the new pedestrian crossing on the corner of Sturt and Paton Sts in Kingsford. This area poses huge risks for students cro...ssing to go to school at Rainbow St Public, Randwick Girls and Randwick Boys High Schools. I worked with the school community to get this approved and constructed in just over six months. Thanks to all involved for your support! See more

13.01.2022 I am putting a motion going to Tuesday night's Randwick City Council meeting urging the Federal Government to find ways to increase the current low rate of vaccination. Allowing under 40's to have access to available AstraZeneca shots would be one way,

05.01.2022 Thanks to all the Matto residents who've done the WSDA survey! 99.4% oppose plans by Suez and Opal to build an incinerator in Matraville. But we need more of you to participate. If you haven't already pls click on the link and add your name to the survey!!

05.01.2022 So lucky to have this in our backyard!

03.01.2022 This is a dangerous, unprecedented and shameful attack on democracy by Lib and Lab MPs. I am gobsmacked.
