24.01.2022 #HistoryWeek20 Subdivision plans were used by real estate agents in the early days to advertise vacant blocks of land for sale. They often included the year suburban blocks were first offered for sale and could be very colourful as they were designed to sell the benefits of buying a block of land. This subdivision plan in Clovelly formerly known as "Little Coogee" highlights the appeal of living so close to the ocean. Named after the property BytheSea clearly marked o...n the map (as is Mundarrah Towers), the mansion is in the vicinity of what is now the Clovelly Hotel, which has long since been demolished. These local landmarks helped the buyers know where the land was situated - they now tell historians what used to exist in locations where these grand buildings have since been demolished. The library has many subdivision plans that can be used to trace the history of your house. Please contact the Local Studies Team to arrange an appointment on 9093 6400.

17.01.2022 Today is the first day of #HistoryWeek20 ! Well be posting some awesome facts about this years theme: History: What is it good for? Today were looking at postcards. Postcards were used as a form of special occasion communication - back in the days of snail mail. Not only did they depict a locality or scene on the front, such as Coogee Beach, they also tell us a lot about the sender. They now reveal to researchers historic changes to localities, changes in fashion ...- e.g. swimming costumes and technology. Postcard collectors use landmarks depicted to date the postcard e.g. historic houses, models of cars also help as do the fashions depicted. These are all clues historians use to date the postcard. The senders details on the reverse can be used to trace where ancestors were living, find out house names, or date the era of the postcard with the postage stamp. Hand-coloured postcards are highly prized by postcard collectors. Some postcards also have photographic images that are of course more accurate in their snapshot of the scene. Do you have any old postcards of the Randwick District? We would love to hear from you if you do. Please contact the Local Studies Team to arrange an appointment on 9093 6400.

08.01.2022 Todays #HistoryWeek20 factoid is about Illuminated Addresses! An Illuminated Address was an old fashioned form of commendation, a recognition of an individuals professional or political achievements. It could also be an act of extreme bravery as in the case of this local example. When Andrew Strachan was leaving the police district of Randwick to take up a promotion, local residents presented him with this illuminated address, paying tribute to his service, by "efficiently preserv[ing] the good order of the community".

07.01.2022 Well done to Abby for winning the People's Choice Award for Book Week 2020! She is now the proud owner of the six shortlisted Early Childhood books. Abby had this to say: ... "Thank you for those lovely books - they are beautifully illustrated and have interesting storylines. I thoroughly enjoyed absorbing all the details in the pictures. My favourite of the books was Bat vs Poss, as it rhymed well and had bright detailed pictures. My favourite illustration was the one of the neighbourhood meeting around the tree, as I loved the detail put in the variety of animals displayed."

05.01.2022 Today is Day 4 of #historyweek20 ! What is History good for? For exhibitions of course! We recently celebrated 50 years since the Wrapped Coast at Little Bay by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Randwick residents and those involved in this iconic art installation back in 1969 on the cliffs at Little Bay travelled from all over Australia to view the iconic images of Christo and Jeanne-Claudes art installation, commissioned by John Kaldor AO. This was the first of his philanthrop...ic art works. John Kaldor shared his memories and insights to a packed audience at Little Bay and lent objects from his archive to supplement the librarys anniversary exhibtion. History is good for remembering our past and celebrating our local history. Image below: The Sydney Rockclimbers reunion visit to the Wrapped Coast Exhibition at Lionel Bowen Library. Fifty years later, people came from all over Australia to celebrate the moment they helped to create in 1969 at Little Bay. Courtesy of Randwick City Library.

04.01.2022 #HistoryWeek20 Building application books are the records kept by the Councils building inspector. Responsible for the regulation of construction in the Municipality of Randwick, the inspector insured that buidlings were constructed to standard and codes. These antique books are excellent records for tracing the history of your house, when it was built, by whom, building materials and the date of completion. What can we tell from this building application? Coro Toulos wa...s the owner of Lot 25 of the Byron Estate subdivision. This property was built by M. Hummell of Rickard St, Bondi. These precious archives are used by home owners today to trace the history of their property. The library has a series of these records 1919-1959. If you are keen to learn how to trace the history of your house, please contact the Local Studies Team to arrange an appointment on 9093 6400. And by cross checking the front gate - that still exists - our clever staff have revealed that Coros named his new house Ariadne - maybe a reference to his ethnic heritage as so many house names were when they were built. House names were used to identify houses before there was street numbering. Check to see if your house still has a house name plaque - if so send us a picture, wed love to see it!
