14.01.2022 MEET OUR TEAM - Wonderful Lana! After qualifying with a Bachelors Degree in Physiotherapy from Curtin University in Western Australia in 1994, Lana completed an internship at the Prince of Wales and former Prince Henry Hospitals. Lana joined the Sydney Children’s Hospital (SCH) Physiotherapy Department in 1997, gaining experience in many clinical areas of paediatric physiotherapy including teaching undergraduate physiotherapy students. In 2005, Lana attained a personal re-gr...ading in Orthopaedics in recognition of my expertise as a clinical consultant for the physiotherapy management of infants, children and young people with specialised orthopaedic conditions. During her time at SCH, Lana travelled to the Island Kingdom of Tonga as part of a multidisciplinary team and was a co-investigator in a scoliosis research project. In 2013, after a 16-year tenure at SCH, Lana joined Randwick Specialists. Physiotherapists are often referred to as 'movement specialists'. A paediatric physiotherapist is trained to assess and treat a variety of conditions that affect the physical function of children. This requires qualities and skills required to assess, motivate and care for children. As a paediatric physiotherapist, it is important to work closely with those who care for children including families, teachers, doctors and other health professionals. Lana's areas of clinical expertise and interest include: New born orthopaedic conditions Postural foot conditions Torticollis / plagiocephaly / head preference Developmental delay Neurological problems Lower limb alignment assessments Post fracture management Post orthopaedic surgery rehabilitation Musculoskeletal Injuries

12.01.2022 Some handy sleep tips from our Paediatric Respiratory and Sleep Physician - the wonderful Dr Widger Tip for Teenage Sleep Teenage sleep has been in the news. Some fascinating research from the US found that a later starting time at school lead to a universal improvement in grades. Parents even stated that their teenagers were easier to live with! Although this is unlikely to be widely implemented in Australia anytime soon there are a number of ways to help improve your teen...’s sleep. Aim for lights out between 10.30 and 11pm Get homework done early Avoid all screens (yes even smart phones) for an hour prior to lights out Engage in relaxing activities such as reading a book or listening to music in the hour before bed. Switch off phones overnight no midnight texting! Exercise Sleep is vital for health, growth and learning. If your teen is struggling with sleep talk to your doctor.
