19.01.2022 I teamed up with my friends at The Childhood Collective to bring you the differences in Autism and ADHD! They can be pretty difficult to tease apart because the...y have a lot of overlapping characteristics. Also, many individuals with an autism diagnosis struggle with inattention and impulsivity and/or also meet diagnostic criteria as having both autism and ADHD. This makes it tricky for an average person (and sometimes experienced professionals!) to differentiate the two, and exactly why a comprehensive and multidisciplinary evaluation can be most beneficial (and why I asked my friends to help out with this post!). Key differences: 1 Autistic individuals typically have differences and difficulties in understanding social rules/interactions, while those diagnosed with ADHD understand and know these rules, they just struggle attending and using them appropriately. 2 Language in autistic kids can often develop in an unusual manner resulting in atypical language (echolalia, scripting, jargon) or have splinter skills (strong labeling skills/vocabulary, difficulty with using language for a variety of purposes), while language in ADHD kids develops in a typical manner but often in a delayed timeline. This is where a quality speech/language evaluation comes in! 3 Autistic individuals may have special interests, preferred routines, body movements/stimming, and difficulty with the development of play- which children with ADHD do not typically present with. 4 While both may have difficulty distinguishing relevant and irrelevant information, autistic individuals often focus on details, while those with ADHD often miss the details.
