23.01.2022 Assessing Future Sires We’ve recently finished assessing our weaner bulls on key commercial traits. Temperament ... Structural soundness Eyes, coat, weight, scrotal measurements Information collected at weaning compared with measurements taken at 12 months of age reveals how these young bulls perform following weaning without milk or any artificial inputs during a period of usually low nutrition. Following assessment at 12 months of age, we only keep bulls deemed sound in all areas with a minimum 30cm scrotal indicating early puberty. Research shows scrotal size needs to be evaluated in terms of ‘how big AND how soon’ ie when you want your heifers cycling. Our annual on property Bull Sale will be held on the 2nd September 2020 at Dunvegan, Charleville.

20.01.2022 The consistent performance of our cow herd has been pleasing considering recent seasonal challenges. Last year the av. preg-test was 85% and this year 90%. Will Nason from the Roma Veterinary Clinic who carries out the preg-testing of the Rangeland Bulls herd made the following comment: I have recently completed the pregnancy testing at ‘Wetlands’ during the weaning muster (March) 2020. Yearling heifers were joined at an average weight of 270kg and joined for 8 weeks fr...om the 21st October 15th December 2020. At pregnancy testing on the 20th of February, 264 out of the 320 heifers (83%) were found to be pregnant and the average weight at pregnancy testing was 320kg. 2-year-old heifers (with their 1st calf at foot) were joined for 11 weeks from 21st October 6th January. 119 out of 132 were found to be pregnant (90%). The main cow mob, which all had calves at foot, were joined for 11 weeks from 21st October 6th January. 666 out of 708 cows were found to be pregnant (94%). The last bulls were removed on the 6th of January, meaning all pregnancies were achieved before the benefit of the breaking rains that began in February 2020. Further to this, the last calf will be born by mid- October. Being an organic operation, cattle also received very limited amounts of supplementation. In my professional opinion, I think these are outstanding results given the extremely dry conditions of 2019 and the summer of 2019/20. The fact that the conception rate is as high as it is, given the last 12 months, speaks for the fertility of this herd. #RangelandBulls #AdaptedCattle #CommercialCattle #Seedstock #Bulls #SustainableBeef #GrassfedBeef #OrganicBeef #CommercialTargets #CommercialPractices #ProfitableBeef #TopXRoma
20.01.2022 Rangeland Bulls 2020 Preg-Test Summary How quickly our world has changed. The last few weeks have been challenging for all as we navigate our way to a new normal. During this time, we have seen rural industries rise to challenges and support each other and our communities. We have completed our weaning and preg-testing program this month and measured consistent conception rates in the females, despite tough seasonal conditions last year. ... Rainfall in 2019 was less than half the annual average with the first significant rain event not arriving until 9th Feb 2020. These cows had no benefit of rain to achieve these conceptions. Yearling Heifers preg-tested at 83% from an 8 week joining 21st Oct 15th Dec. These heifers weighed an average of 272 kgs at joining and 310kgs at preg-testing on 20th February, 2020 Two Year Old Heifers all weaning their first calf preg-tested at 90% from an 11 week join 21st Oct 3rd Jan. Main breeder mob preg-tested at 94% from an 11 week joining 21st Oct 3rd Jan. Weaners from this mob averaged 250kgs. Keeping input costs down. Breeders run on lighter wattle, sand and range country have only received minimal organic supplementation of mineral trace elements. Thank you to the @Roma Veterinary Clinic for your professional service! We look forward to measuring our weaner bulls over the coming month and updating on their progress. We hope you stay safe and well.
