13.01.2022 ATTENTION ALL GREEN THUMBS The Victorian State Government has just issued a warning to all gardeners using potting mix! The DHHS has just been notified of 26 cases of Legionella longbeachae from 1st Jan to 30th Oct. This bacteria is a cause of Legionnaires’ disease, a form of pneumonia.... While Legionella longbeachae is found in tiny quantities in the general environment (including soil), it is not normally a health hazard. However, the ingredients and dampness of potting mix make it the ideal breeding ground for the bacteria. Legionnaires' disease can be fatal in a small number of people who have severe illness. The number of cases usually peak around November as infections are common during the time when people are most likely to garden so it’s very important gardeners are aware of this risk and take steps to reduce the risk of exposure. Risk management includes wearing a mask and glove when handling soil and washing hands with soap and water before eating, drinking etc, More information can be found by visiting https://www2.health.vic.gov.au//health/warning-potting-mix
