25.01.2022 Must Watch - How innocently it Spreads! #BreakTheChain

25.01.2022 Irukandji Alert - what the experts have told us... * Weather conditions have caused irukandji to be in our waters * for the NEXT FEW DAYS TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS... * Wear a full body protective suit / clothing if you are going in the water, particularly on the western side of Fraser Island * Carry vinegar and use it liberally on the sting * Seek medical treatment urgently, if stung Luckily marine stingers are not around our beautiful area of Hervey Bay all the time. We just happen to be at the height of a spike at the moment. Experts advise it is a rare thing for people to be stung, but it is particularly nasty when it does happen. The problem is the experts are still researching when the weather conditions are likely to cause a spate of marine stingers in the water....so we just don't know. That's why our crews at Marine Rescue Hervey Bay wear protective suits when they enter the water at any time during the summer period. BTW - Irukandji are very small and almost transparent - you won't see them in the water.

12.01.2022 Resusci Annie- the CPR DOLL This is the DEATH MASK of a young woman who drowned in the River Seine in the 1880s. As was customary in those days, her corpse was ...put on display in the Paris mortuary, in the hope that someone might recognize her and claim her body. The pathologist on duty became entranced by the girl with the enigmatic half-smile, and so he commissioned a plaster cast made of her face. This mask was replicated many times over. She became known as "L'Inconnue de la Seine, or The Unknown Woman of the Seine. . In 1955, a toymaker named Asmund Laerdal created what we now know as the CPR doll. Asmund wanted his mannequin to have a natural appearance. Remembering a mask on the wall of his grandparents' house many years earlier, he decided that the L'Inconnue de la Seine would become the face of Resusci Anne - the CPR doll. This anonymous woman who drowned in the 19th century is responsible for saving many, many lives the world over. See more

10.01.2022 One souvenir you don't want to come home with when visiting the Tip of Australia is a stingray barb, especially one lodged in your leg! Recently, teacher Liam ...was enjoying his school holiday break and whilst walking in the shallows accidentally stood on a stingray. Both Liam and the stingray got quite the fright and the barb became lodged in Liam's calf. After a short trip on road with our paramedics, some time in Bamaga Hospital and a helicopter ride to Cairns for surgery, Liam is back home with an unusual story for 'show and tell'. A tip from the Tip is to create noise and vibrations when walking in shallows to warn stingrays and keep your eyes peeled for sea creatures. If you ever find yourself on the end of a stingray barb, the best antidote for the pain from their toxin is to submerge the affected area in hot (not boiling) water, as you can see by the innovative use of the green bins by the staff at Bamaga Hospital. We're glad you're on the road to recovery Liam!

08.01.2022 An important reminder on the First aid for swallowed button batteries. Many assume that the first step would be to call 000 - This is true in any case in which... your child is having difficulty breathing. Call 000 immediately. If your child is not having difficulty breathing, and you suspect or know they have swallowed a button battery, you must act immediately and call the Poisons Information Centre 13 11 26. - Take your child immediately to the nearest Emergency Department for assessment and treatment. - Do not try to make your child vomit. - Do not let your child eat or drink while awaiting medical advice.
