24.01.2022 CAN YOU HELP DI? A message from our musical Di... I am looking for this type of bucket for the Music classroom. They will be used to store Boomwhackers and as instruments in a drumming course for the students. Ideally, I would like about 35. I am also searching for donations of items such as cassette tapes, Walkmans, old radios, etc, to be included in a ‘museum’ in the Music room. Items can be dropped to the Music room on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday mornings or afternoons.

20.01.2022 TRIVIA NIGHT - SUPERHEROES We are sure to see more photos and hear from Val and our awesome P&C team about how wonderful the evening was. Here are some pictures and a write up from Chantelle, our superhero Education Assistant! A galant performance by the Rapids quiz team, Cape to Cape Crusaders, on Saturday night! We unfortunately didn’t bring home the golden cup, however we all had a great laugh and learnt a few new trivia fun facts!... Did you know that the Giraffe is the only mammal without vocal chords? and Brazil produces the highest amount of coffee in the world ... Team members pushed their creativity skills and stem knowledge with attempting to build the tallest structure out newspaper. A gutsy effort ! Well done to Captain Underpants who won the best dressed for the night and also to a very brave appearance from Kung Fu Panda.! A great night

20.01.2022 OWL FRIENDLY SCHOOL Thanks to Kai and Brucey for accepting our Owl Hero plaque at the Owl Friendly Margaret River function Friday night.

19.01.2022 PONDERING THE BIG QUESTION - 2020 South West Philosothon On Friday 18 September, six students travelled to Geographe Primary School to participate in the 2020 South West Philosothon. It was the first time Rapids Landing Primary School has participated in this exciting competition, which brings students together in Communities of Inquiry to discuss philosophical questions, grapple with ideas, consider the views of others and come to reasoned judgements as well as imagine, wond...er, reflect, question, puzzle, talk and speculate. Focus questions included ‘Is science good or bad?’, ‘Are the best things in life free?’ and ‘How do we know what is true?’ Our students represented the school magnificently, and Hunter took home the trophy for Standout Year 4 Philosopher. Well done to all involved and congratulations on your participation! Special thanks to Jack, our Philosothon Leader, and to our parents who supported us with transport. See more

18.01.2022 LET'S MEET SCOTT PEARCE Selamat siang Rapids Landing community! My name is Scott Pearce and I am looking forward to joining the teaching team in all the fun and activities of the Music and Indonesian Language learning programs in 2021! It’s wonderful to see the school and community working together to give students of Rapids Landing great opportunities to enjoy music and Indonesian language in school life. I am looking forward to supporting you and inspiring your children by ...bringing the world of modern cultures and traditional arts into the Music and Indonesian classrooms. Sharing with students my professional knowledge from WAAPA, ECU, Cinta Bahasa and life experiences from abroad in Asia; Kupang Timor, Bali Indonesia, Bangkok Thailand and Saitama Japan, your children will be enjoying the music, arts and languages which connect us all in celebrating life. I believe in ‘Music and Languages for Everyone’ in which we strive to provide valuable and enjoyable learning experiences for all students. In music classes I will be applying the Orff Schulwerk sequential learning process of Sing -Clap -Dance -Play Instruments, providing students with all-round life music skills and in Bahasa Indonesia classes students will continue to have lots of fun learning practical day-to-day language skills to enjoy using in conversation exchanges, classroom role plays and singing Indonesian songs. My passion for music and Indonesian language also began when I was a primary school student, which led me to studying Music (Jazz) Percussion at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts after completing high school and also studying in Asia from the age of 19 years old. My career in teaching has been built on these valuable experiences and having been teaching in primary schools in the south west and abroad in Asia over the past four years. I’m excited to bring it all to Rapids Landing. My family of four and I can’t wait to return to the Margaret River region from living abroad in Asia and look forward to getting involved in enjoying the culture, music and great people that makes Margaret River a wonderful place to be. See you soon!! See more

17.01.2022 PLAY CRICKET CLINICS Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 were invited to participate in a ‘Play Cricket’ clinic hosted by coaches from the WACA (Western Australian Cricket Association). It was fantastic to see so many students and families giving it a go. Despite some unfavourable weather, students were still able to put their skills to the test! Thank you to all the staff who assisted on Friday morning and feedback shows students had a fantastic time. For those students interested, Margaret River Hawks CC will be running a free Come and Try on Saturday 26 September at Gloucester Oval (Football Oval). This will be held at 12:30pm straight after the Margaret River 13s AFL Grand Final. All students are welcome to participate. Thanks to Leigh for organising.

15.01.2022 A WHALE OF A TIME! Millie and Finlay provided this recount. We had a special guest from Naturalist Charters came and visit CS1, CS2, and HB3 for a wonderful talk about whales and why they are so important to our eco-system. Pia, our special guest, talked about many facts and ways to tell different whales apart. Some facts Pia told us about where whales poop looks like fluoro breadcrumbs, this is because of all the krill and plankton whales eat. A way to tell whales apart is ...by the shape of their blow hole. Pia also told us that we breathe in oxygen then breathe out carbon dioxide, which the krill and plankton breathe in then breathe out oxygen. Then the whales breathe in oxygen and breathe carbon dioxide out, that way when a whale dies all of the carbon dioxide sinks into the seafloor. The whales skin and poop is then eaten by the fish. Pia brought in a baleen plate from a whale, these plates sit in their top jaw of their mouth only, not the bottom of their jaw. Thank you, Pia, for coming in and giving us an amazing talk about whales and why they are so important to our eco-system. We would also like to thank Karen for organising this wonderful opportunity with Naturalist Charters. See more

15.01.2022 MR LIONS CLUB ARE AMAZING Ever since we opened, the Margaret River Lions Club has been a strong and generous supporter of Rapids Landing PS. Whether it has been through generous grants, in kind support or offering opportunities for us to help with their Garage Sales to fund raise, our school community has benefited significantly. We are thrilled to have received $5 000 towards our shade structure - this amazing donation helps us get so close to building a facility that keeps our students sheltered from sun, wind and rain. Thanks, MR Lions Club - we are so grateful!

14.01.2022 LET'S MEET ASTI JORGENSEN Hello Rapids Landing Primary. My name is Asti Jorgensen and I am so excited and thrilled to be joining the team at Rapids Landing in 2021 as a Classroom Teacher. I am looking forward to getting to know your beautiful community, the students, parents and staff as we create excellence together. A brief history for you. I have worked within the education field since 2005 for the Education Department, Catholic and Private sectors, beginning my journey ...as an Education Assistant before graduating with my Bachelor of Education in 2009. I have been so lucky that teaching has taken me to many wonderful rural, remote and urban locations across WA and not only is it a career choice of mine, it is a passion and always an adventure. Just ask me about the 2011 Fitzroy River flooding, that time I rescued a snake from the sports shed or the time I wore a giant helicopter suit when the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter landed on the oval! There is no other career I would consider as I truly believe that there is nothing better than walking through the school gates knowing that each day is fresh, exciting and challenging, filled with joy, laughter and those unforgettable light bulb moments for students. My daily goal in the classroom is offering engaging, real life, relevant and hands-on learning experiences where students are immersed in the WA Curriculum while I cater to each and every student. I take into account their interests, strengths and differing abilities while also encouraging students to tackle safe challenges. For me the classroom environment is one that mirrors a family unit where we are respectful, supportive and collaborative with one another. It is a place where we can ask questions, take risks and all students can feel proud of their daily achievements. As for my hobbies, I have many but family time, a good book, connecting with friends, anything outdoors, dabbling in the arts and spending time with animals are my top! My favourite holiday destinations are Broome, Shark Bay, Coral Bay and the Southwest. I must also admit I love chocolate, even though it is an occasional treat. For now I wish you all the very best that the remaining weeks of Term 4 has to offer, a lovely Christmas and New Year break before we say goodbye 2020 and welcome the wonders that 2021 has to offer. So until we meet, be safe, be kind and be yourself!

06.01.2022 THREE BEARS PLAY SPACE The Kindergarten and Pre-Primary children have had the opportunity to work with Ryan to add some colour to the boat in the Three Bears playground. Over two days, small groups of children painted sections of the boat in a colour of their choosing. Thank you, Ryan, for your assistance and for helping to provide the opportunity for the children to have ownership of a piece of the playground. Great painting, everyone, the boat is a piece of art.

05.01.2022 An amazing evening of students sharing their learning progress and achievement with their parents, carers and special people in their world. Massive appreciations to our whole school community for helping us have this reporting opportunity in a safe environment and to Miriam and the P&C for catering. PS Loved the talented, busking Instrumental Music students.

03.01.2022 DEFIBRILLATOR FOR OUR RAPIDS LANDING COMMUNITY Our proactive P&C were successful in applying for a Lotterywest Heart Grant to install a defibrillator on our external fence on Hudsbeth Way so that our community has access to such a device in an emergency. We have now registered our location on the St John Community First Responder System (CFRS) as part of the Lotterywest Heart Grant and the intent is for contact to be made following any activation at our location. If there ar...e incidents in which we have not been notified, we have been asked to contact CFRS to help them continuously monitor and improve their systems. As a CFR location, we become part of a team of more than 10 000 staff and volunteers spread across the state as a member of St John. With over 5 000 registered locations, the system has proven to save lives of cardiac arrest victims in over 200 recorded cases! Chelsea and Board Chair, Damo, show its location next to the Hamelin Bay block entry on Hudsbeth Way. Thanks again, Amanda, Claire, Miriam and the P&C for your application.

02.01.2022 SO MUCH GRATITUDE.... In such cold and windy weather, our amazing school community still had a team who supported Ryan in weeding outside spaces near the Early Childhood. They're still braving the "feels like 3 degree" weather until 10.30am. Thank you so much, Claire, Matt, Dan, Damo and Ryan!

01.01.2022 FUN RUN GENEROSITY Matt Wallis and the whole team from Wallis Legal REALLY wants to help us create the shade structure and has pledged to donate 50 cents in every dollar that a child is sponsored in the Colour Run next Saturday. For example, if your child has $20 of sponsorship, Matt will donate a further $10 to the Rapids Landing PS Building Fund. He had generously said he will do this for every single student.... What a bonus! Not only do we have a great Colour Run but we can also really increase our fundraising efforts. PS If you need a sponsorship form, please call in to the Admin Office.
