10.01.2022 Reef HQ Great Barrier Reef Aquarium SECURES $26.9 MILLION UPGRADE This has to be good for our city & our tourism ABC North Queensland REPOST: The Reef HQ... Aquarium in Townsville has secured $26.9 million in Federal Government funding. The money was announced in yesterday's mid-year budget update. It will be used to upgrade infrastructure including the turtle hospital and one of the aquarium tanks over four years. The Federal Member for Herbert, Phillip Thompson OAM MP - Fighting For Townsville says the attraction is in need of a makeover. We’ve seen over a 128,000 people visit Reef HQ in the last year so it’s extremely well-timed and well-deserved to see this money flow into Reef HQ for a refurbishment, Mr Thompson said. We know it’s not just good for the region, not just for tourism, it’s also about educational piece for the reef which is something we always need to be on top of, he said. This money will do wonders not just for here but will also bring people to our city. It’s about activating this part of this city and we all know Reef HQ is a part of the heart of Townsville. GBRMPA CEO Josh Thomas says he is delighted about the funding injection. After 32 years of operation, there was a timely point in which to do a refresh of this facility, Mr Thomas said. We are going to be doing very exciting things like updating the predator tank and the wreck exhibit they’re in, he said. We will be relocating our famous much-loved turtle hospital to a forward part of the aquarium, so visitors can better access that. Many other refreshing upgrades besides, we look forward to opening our doors again after those upgrades to a renewed aquarium, an aquarium in which even more people can enjoy. #shoplocaltownsville
