25.01.2022 Good morning raptor Lovers! Have you gotten your 2021 Raptor Refuge calendar yet? These calendars are our major fundraising initiative, and allow us to assist in things like saving this sweet little brown falcon. He was found severely dehydrated and pecked by ravens on the roadside. Now with some TLC he’s perking right up! Please support us if you can - a list of Tassie retailers is right at the top of our page
24.01.2022 Evening Raptor fans! A bit of a strange request here: Just wanting to source some nice-actually VERY nice- wooden/timber benches for the beautiful grounds @raptor refuge. Anyone know of some sturdy, well-crafted, handsome bench seats? Locally made obviously. Id like solid timber with natural curves and the rustic look ideally.... I looked at Bunnings but just nothing even close! Tassie will have it somewhere.. Photo for attention... Winner winner chicken dinner See more

20.01.2022 We Swamp Harriers! Belonging to the raptor family, Harriers hunt for vermin such as mice, rats and rabbits earning them the reputation of being a ‘farmers’ friend’. Traditional swampland nesting sites of Harriers have been agriculturally modified over time and the birds have adapted now to often nesting in Summer-harvest crops such as cereals, fodder, poppies, pyrethrum and beans. This harvest season, remember to be careful and mindful of the birds you may share your land with! If you think you may have a Swamp Harrier, please get in touch with Raptor Refuge. We may be able to coordinate using your nesting site as a foster home for orphaned chicks. Learn more at http://harriersintheharvest.com.au/

18.01.2022 This Bgos smashed his beak on the INSIDE window of a house Weve continued to file and shape and watch it grow and grow and he is now at about 75% Can eat pretty well as you can see I can feel a release coming
17.01.2022 A number of years ago, when erecting massive poles for flight aviaries (28 mtrs high to be precise), I though that the wild wedgies who come in daily for two decades would appreciate a purpose built perch on top, complete with Astro turf I certainly never tire of seeing them, but today I just happened to be close enough to get a pic of 2 of our regular visitors. Thought you may like to see.
17.01.2022 Look whats just landed! To celebrate our new 2021 Raptor Refuge calendars, we have spiffy new display boxes. These include a section for us to share our free 1800 RAPTOR stickers, to raise awareness about our hotline for helping dead or injured raptors. Looking forward to getting these out to stockists around Tasmania! Anyone else feel like the year is flying by?
17.01.2022 UPDATE: Unfortunately the story of the Dodges Ferry sea eagle has come to an end. Despite tremendous effort from our team and Sandy Bay Holistic Veterinary Centre, the bird nonetheless suffered complications from its injuries and couldn’t be rehabilitated. We’re sorry to break this news to our followers, who showed such tremendous support for this special patient. We hope the person responsible for shooting this bird is held accountable for their actions.
17.01.2022 Have you heard? August 14th something BIG is coming to Raptor Refuge! Stay tuned

16.01.2022 Two dead goshawks today, and another a few days ago. It is clear that as we raise awareness and as the 1800RAPTOR hotline gets better known, we will be dealing with more and more tragic cases. So its now a fantastic opportunity for the Tasnetworks team and Raptor Refuge team to make headway into this serious and ongoing issue.
16.01.2022 Avoid poison to keep our bird friends safe this winter!

15.01.2022 Are you ready to hear our BIG NEWS? Today we are excited to launch Australia's largest raptor flight aviary, here in Kettering as part of Raptor Refuge! This project is the result of massive effort and determination, and we are proud to share it with you! Our new aviary... Is over 52 metres long, 26 metres wide and 14 metres high, containing 16,500 cubic mtres of flight area! Weighs only 700 kgs! Made of state-of-the-art Dyneema material, it resists rain water and has b...een manufactured specially all the way from Croatia. Is the new home for our largest birds of prey, the Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagle, which we are proud to rescue and rehabilitate. This enormous achievement wouldn't have been possible without the support of all the raptor lovers in our network! This is a series addition to the already world-class facilities at Raptor Refuge, and will serve us for decades into the future as we HELP THEM SOAR AGAIN! See more
14.01.2022 A lady has contacted RR today as she was taking photos of eagles. This bird appears to have a 2litre milk bottle either caught or snagged or possibly the bird is holding. Bit hard to tell. Please keep a look out if youre near Connelys Marsh! If possible get another photo or 3!! Never a dull moment @ Raptor Refuge 1800RAPTOR: for dead or injured raptors only.... NOT FOR GENERAL ENQUIRES See more
14.01.2022 Our Boobook friend has made it to Raptor Refuge after surviving a car collision last night! He is all cleaned up and resting with a belly full of chicken, with no major injuries other than an eye wound which we are carefully monitoring. Thanks again to all our followers who make the rescue and transport of these birds possible!
14.01.2022 Sad to see a young sea eagle came in contact with power assets, resulting in gruesome injuries. This eagle was put to sleep. Although tragic, this death gives us the chance to report a fatality to Tasnetworks as per the arrangements with Raptor Refuge. We will update progress on mitigation of this hazard as it happens. Farmer called to say the adult birds were hanging around the site after the youngin was taken away.
13.01.2022 In 12 days we have had 2 wedgies and 2 Sea eagles to deal with One Wedgie put to sleep. Still chasing the other one with a leg dangling. One Seagle has symmetrical broken primary flight feathers on either wing.. very strange. And today’s call on our 1800raptor hotline and ultimate rescue revealed a possible shot adult bird Just near a nest... Disturbing stuff. Look closely at X-ray. Positive side is no joint issue and the radius can act as a splint....beautiful bird ... well they all are. Talons crossed See more
12.01.2022 Happy New Year Raptor Lovers! Here’s a happy review from a recent visitor: My husband and i came on monday (peter and gwenny) to visit and kate showed us around your magnificent facility that includes many endangered animals who are being so carefully attended to by the staff both, paid and volunteers. The wisdom of the owls, the power of the eagles were on display. A cost is involved but well worth a visit as it includes a gift shop and educational centre for all ages. Thanks to Kate for her knowledge and expertise and Juliet for setting up our personalised visit.
12.01.2022 Yesterday we achieved a huge milestone in defending Tasmanian Raptors. After many years of lobbying, TasNetworks and Raptor Refuge have partnered to create the Birds Of Prey Safe Soaring initiative. This working group puts our experts at the table with engineers to review and remedy bird fatalities resulting from our states electrical infrastructure. Power line strikes are a huge threat to native raptors, including wedge tailed eagles, white goshawks, sea eagles, and maske...d owls. Simple solutions like power pole perches and reflective flappers make a huge difference if we make the effort. The 2 pole top photos show before and after: uninsulated then insulated to make safe (not rocket science) and a perch installed which is a simple treated pine cross bolted on. This is just the first step, and there is a long way to go, but as ever Raptor Refuge are on the front lines pushing for progress wherever we can! It simply makes sense to discuss issues and problem-solve. Our 1800raptor hotline for dead or injured raptors statewide is collating so much data and assists many more birds in need. Thank you Tasnetworks for getting on board. See more

08.01.2022 We are very thankful that Tasnetworks have assisted us with a 17.5 mtr cherry picker and manpower to do some pole work and wire work in readiness for our new Eagle flight aviary. 05.01.2022 Win-win! Youre looking at two gorgeous tassie wedge-tailed eagles perched safely on a poletop retrofitted with a perch. It seems simple enough, just two cheap pieces of timber and hardware. But this photo is the outcome of years of negotiation and advocacy, resulting in a partnership between @tasnetworks and @raptorrefuge. And were just getting started! There is still much to do. Soon were hoping this will be a common sight as we aim to save countless bird lives. #tasmania #wildlife #animalrescue #eagles photo from Peter Thorp.

04.01.2022 Looking better already! This little guy had a tough weekend after being hit by a car and suffering an eye injury, but he appears to be on the right track! Owls eyes are extremely powerful and versatile, but they are vulnerable to being injured because they are positioned on the front of their face - the spot that gets bonked in a flying collision! Owls cannot move their eyes, but they make up for it by being able to turn their heads 270 degrees around. This boobook owls huge pupils let in as much light as possible, giving him exceptional night vision. Get well soon!
04.01.2022 Such lovely weather prompted a tiny video of walking into Raptor Refuge
04.01.2022 Check it out Raptor Lovers! Over the last few weeks, @Peter Barwick and his team at Water Industry Solutions have been hard at work here helping us improve the fire security at Raptor Refuge! Their work has been extensive, including multiple diggers, trucks, and workers laying hoses, sprinklers, electrowelding pipes, and completely improving on every other system we had designed or in place. Their generous support will help us defend our facilities in a blaze, meaning we are defended even in a worst-case-scenario event. We give huge thanks to their team, and encourage all our followers to do their absolute best to improve fire safety however they can this season. Find them at wisgroup.com.au
03.01.2022 We have re-opened for Walk and Talk tours! Who has their private tour booked!?
03.01.2022 TasNetworks’ leadership team hosted their meeting at Raptor Refuge today! We gave a tour of the facilities including our MASSIVE new flight aviary, which they played a role in supporting. We discussed current issues, shared food, and further developed our plans towards the shared goal of helping our state’s birds of prey. We are proud to be advocating on every level on behalf of these creatures!
