22.01.2022 Effective Communication Tip: Make Straight Requests. No Fluff. Picture an excited 3 year old: ‘I’m turning 3 tomorrow!!! Wanna come to my party!?? There’s going to be a bouncy castle!’ ... See? Simple. No fluff. Avoid this: ‘Hi! I’m turning 3 tomorrow. I know it’s a week day and coming towards the end of the financial year but I was wondering, if it’s not too much to ask of you, being so busy and all - I know you’re a family man! - if you’d like to come, even just for a short bit; you don’t have to stay the whole time if it’s not really your thing, no hard feelings! I totally understand, I have days when I’m not in a party mood myself haha... anyway, there’s going to be a bouncy castle, should be heaps of fun! No dramas if you can’t, chances are I’ll have another one next year around the same time. Just let me know.’ That’s ALL FLUFF. No need. When you fluff up requests you’re opening a back door, you’re minimising the main point of the communication, you’re letting yourself off the hook, pretending that what you’re asking is really NOT that important. Be straight. Be clear. Honour the power of your requests. #effectivecommunication

09.01.2022 Effective Communication Tip: Just say NO. Keep it simple. No reasons needed. Saying just NO is as valid as saying just YES. Real Life Example: ... Q: Can you meet me Friday 9am? You: That day doesn’t work. How about Tuesday 9am? See? Easy. Try it. Avoid the following: (real life example) oh, I can’t do Friday because that day I’m going to visit a client at 8:30 and I don’t think I’ll be done by 9, maybe we could do 9:30 but I really wouldn’t want to stretch my luck. I wish I could, maybe we could try another day. how’s Tuesday 9am? That day I’ve got early drop off at school, my partner usually takes the car and the kids and I take the train to the city but that day I make it early to the office because it’s their day off so I can certainly do 9am. No need. You may think it makes your NO more valid but it doesn’t. NO itself is valid enough. #effectivecommunication
