24.01.2022 I put these eggs in at almost midnight on a Sunday night so technically they aren't due until Monday, there is always that one who just can't wait to see the world!

23.01.2022 My new young Golden Cuckoo Marans boys are coming along nicely and I currently have my first lovely dark brown eggs for the season in the incy <3 One also has a Faverolles girlfriend, the cross should hopefully produce a lovely pinky plum coloured egg from her daughters.

19.01.2022 I was asked to write this for the Greatlander page, but I reckon it would work for any table top incubator where there are issues with the humidity being too high, so I thought I would share on here. Like many others I was finding it hard to regulate the humidity in my Offspring, no water and it was 19%, add water and it went up over 65%, so I came up with this method of adjustment and have been asked to share. Because it is surface area not volume that dictates the humidity... I lessened the surface by buying some Blu-tack, it comes in a packet of strips and one strip split in half fits nicely on each side of the inner channel. Press it down firmly all around so that it is watertight and simply add water to one half of the channel. For me half is perfect (I live in southern Tasmania) but if you live in a more humid climate you can make it smaller simply by making it less than one half to fill. I then cut out the grid in one of the air vents and fed a tube through the hole - if you want to lift the lid and add water that's fine too - and I slowly add water via a syringe each time I find the humidity has dropped, usually only once a day or so. FYI the half channel nicely holds 50ml :) I expect you could play around and do this with any small incubator to lessen the water surface area and adjust humidity, it is an easy fix and my incubator now runs perfectly with humidity between 45 - 51% depending on ambient humidity of the room See more

18.01.2022 Soggy Polish cockerels on a wet snowy morning, it's hard to tell which is smooth and which is frizzle! No wonder my girls are slow coming back into lay in the cold and mud, brrrrr!

17.01.2022 This was nice to find when I came home tonight after a crap day, my page 'Rosie's Roost' is showcased on the new breeder's group EggSellent.com.au

13.01.2022 Seriously these chickens will send me to an early grave! Got up this morning and my favourite girl Czarny had flown the coop, I hadn't been out to their run since yesterday lunchtime so I had no idea how long she had been missing. After spending hours and hours searching and nothing short of a miracle we finally found her stuck in a roll of stocklock wire in the junk pile behind the giant pine tree! She must have got in from the other end of the roll because she was well ...and truly stuck and had obviously been there a while, she had one blood covered egg and a soft shell less egg. She would have died there if we hadn't found her, the wire was also wrapped around her chest and leg and I had to cut her out with bolt cutters, the pic is after I pulled the roll out of the pile. She was a bit wobbly on her legs as well as very hungry and thirsty, but other than a few broken feathers she is otherwise fine See more

13.01.2022 For anyone who was a member of Rare Poultry Breeders - Australia, facebook saw fit to disable it last night without warning. We believe we have adhered to all their rules stringently so have no idea why and have been given no right of reply. All that valuable information gone. So if you were a member and are wondering why you can't find it or would like to become a member here is the link to the new page, please be aware it is an information page with NO buying or selling whatsoever so if that is all you are wanting don't bother joining :) https://www.facebook.com/groups/rarepoultryinoz/

11.01.2022 My friend Wendy Thomson has just set this page up if you are interested in quail :)

11.01.2022 An opportunity to move on your unwanted roosters! All they ask is a donation and they will respectfully deal with boys which are not suitable to rehome

11.01.2022 And so the new season begins <3

10.01.2022 Due to cutting back since I retired I have only kept 2 white double laced red project Barnevelder girls this season but I am happy with their progress so far, these F3 pullets are 6 months, hatched 26/11 The hardest thing about a project by far is to stick to it and not give up, it takes years of ups and downs and even after just 4 years since I started the project I have thought about chucking it in the too hard basket but then I see these pretty girls and it makes me want to keep going

09.01.2022 For all those patiently (and impatiently! ) waiting for Marans, stress less there will be plenty to go around! Apart from all those in my first 3 hatches these little cuties are a week old today

08.01.2022 The bobble heads enjoying some sunshine. Even if it is still only 9 degrees we should make it to double figures soon - 10 is double figures right??? Updated to say the sun stayed out all day and it reached a balmy 11 degrees, definitely double figures lol!

07.01.2022 EDITED TO UPDATE: I have candled the eggs, 2 were a couple of days behind because they were off to one side and hadn't start developing but they also now also have little spiders growing so 15/15 fertile! So I have been letting a few pens free range while I was having a short break from hatching. A few days ago one of my mottle D'uccles was missing at lockup, the next day I went looking and eventually found her under the hay, she doesn't look very far under but I couldn'...t reach to get her out and the gap was too small for a net. Early this morning she was in the yard looking for food so she is now safely back in her pen and free ranging for the broody breeds is now off the books! I moved the hay and was able to get the 15 eggs out one at a time between 2 fingers, they were stone cold but I will see how they go, I guess I might as well fill the incubator again lol See more

07.01.2022 TO ALL MY CHICKEN BUYERS THIS SEASON JUST GONE...... I can't remember who had this on their toddler, someone who went down to visit the horses while they were here, I found it along the fence line a while back. If it belongs to your little tacker please drop me a pm and I will post it to you if you are not from nearby :)

06.01.2022 Because of all the poultry page closures on fb a lot of people are moving across to MeWe. There are lots of poultry groups on there where you can buy and sell without fear of being closed down by the animal liberation extremists that seem to have taken over fb, this one is a Polish and other crested breeds page

05.01.2022 Yep definitely spring time, I am gonna have to use a bigger bucket! The buff/gold pen wasn't laying so I haven't checked it for a week or so.........they are all the blue bucket, I guess they are back laying! Now I need to lock them out of the mud run, they have access to a dry run (and a 10 x 12ft shed) but love that muddy side :/

05.01.2022 Well I have to say I am gobsmacked! The eggs in the first picture have been put into an incubator this afternoon in Queensland - Burpengary to be precise - and the ones in the yellow square were posted by me yesterday afternoon from southern Tasmania, they arrived in LESS THAN 24 HOURS!!!!!!! Even in good times the norm has been a minimum of 3 days, usually 4! My theory is that because the post is known to be so bad at the moment there was next to nothing else posted, especi...ally since my postmistress told me when I dropped them off that they couldn't guarantee express for them! I had a part sent from Queensland last week express post for one of my incubators and it took a week to arrive Lately I have been hearing horror stories of eggs taking 10 days and arriving smashed, these arrived as pristine as they left (although I do pride myself on my packaging method), now we have to wait and see how shaken up they were...... 04.01.2022 And now it feels like Christmas <3

03.01.2022 Last hatch for the year, 2 incubators almost empty and one to go. Buff laced, gold laced, silver laced, white crested black/blue, candy corn, cuckoo and mottle Polish, Barnevelders, Golden Cuckoo Marans, Araucanas and Belgian D'uccles. Basically a bit of everything lol

03.01.2022 Ok folks, let us clear up some confusion. This is a Polish frizzle. She is NOT a Polish CROSS frizzle. She is PURE POLISH and accordingly she can be exhibited as a pure Polish. At least once a week, usually more, I receive requests for Polish x frizzle pullets and I explain this over and over again. Only a Polish Frizzle, a Japanese Bantam Frizzle or the actually breed CALLED Frizzle are considered a pure breed and are recognized in the SOP (Standard of Perfection) The second photo is the introduction to the Polish SOP in the Australian Poultry Standards second edition. Please note the yellow marked sentence!!! Any other frizzled bird other than the three abovementioned breeds is a cross, a frizzled Polish is not!
