02.01.2022 Finally did some social dis-dance-ing :P It's been a full 40 days since I last wore a sari (which is definitely a record), and 41 days since I last performed so... here we go! A tribute to Bharathiyar as requested by Chandrika Subramaniyan :) (and yes I chose the songs because I'm missing work, hence the obsession with bees and honey and Valli's pearl-like smile) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSeHWWbTw_s 1. Paayum Oli (audio by Sathyaprakash) 2. Villinai Otha (audio from Paramanandam by Ranjani-Gayatri) 3. Agni Kunjondru (audio from Bharatha Samudayam Vazhgave DVD) In Paayum Oli the poet describes the universal mother goddess (Parasakthi) as his beloved (Kannamma). "You are the piercing light to me, I am the eye that beholds you. You are the pure nectar, I am the bee. I cannot describe your grandeur, you are a heavenly light, you are an elixir, my dearest Kannama. You are the veena, and I am the fingers that caress the strings. You are the necklace and I am the new diamond on it. Everywhere I look, I see the light from your eyes, you are the only permanent thing in my life, Kannamma. You are the embodiment of love, and I am the attraction. You are the scriptures and I am your skill. You are the sweetness that comes rushing in when I reach enlightenment, you are all sound/music... you are my life, my darling Kannamma". Villinai Otha contrasts Murugan's valorous deeds with his courtship of Valli. "You with the eyebrows shaped like a bow once made a mountain crumble and fall. Yet when you set eyes on young Valli who speaks as sweetly as though her words were dipped in honey, you became intoxicated and stood as a tree in the forest for her. Oh Muruga, you once destroyed the evil demon whose heart was harder than a boulder, but you became an old man to woo Valli whose dazzling smile can put pearls to shame". Agni Kunjondru is a motivational song in which the poet states that one's valour is not related to their age and inspires people to stand up for their beliefs despite their size and skill. "I once saw a tiny flame, and I put it safely inside a hole in a tree... the entire forest was reduced to embers - bravery does not depend on your size".

02.01.2022 I have been invited to perform at the Auburn Pongal Vizha this Saturday (18th January) at around 7.30 (the event goes from 5.45 to 9.30). As pongal is a time to celebrate the sun and nature, I will be performing a thematic presentation - Panchabootha: The Five Elements - with an emphasis on fire and rain given the recent fires in Australia. All of the dances I will be performing have either been specifically choreographed (or modified from my previous choreography) to be specifically relevant to this show. Entry is free! I hope to see you all there :)
