20.01.2022 Good Morning! We thought wed start the morning with some interesting (some are very useful) facts about pickles/gherkins. - Up until the invention of modern refrigeration, pickling was the only way to preserve food for future consumption. This ancient process of preserving food is believed to have originated about 4000 years ago.... - The word pickle comes from the Dutch pekel meaning brine. - Pickled cucumbers are known as a powerful antioxidant. - Cleopatra ate pickles because she believed they were one of the things that helped her stay beautiful. - Pickled cucumbers are great for maintaining a healthy digestive system, rich in fibre. - They are low in fat and calories. One large pickled cucumber contains less than a gram of fat and only 32 calories! - Pickles provide a good supply of essential nutrients such as vitamin A, Beta-carotene, vitamin K, folate, calcium, iron, potassium. This info. may not make you look at your life from a different perspective, but at least the humble pickle will get a lot more smiles!

13.01.2022 Turkish Style Coffee under spotlight this morning For all the coffeeholics out there, we put Turkish style coffee under some spotlight this Friday morning. Maybe you are enjoying a cup while reading this right now? Digging into the origins of Turkish coffee brings up countless theories of where it all started, perhaps in the Ethiopian city of Kaffa as one popular theory suggests or in Yemen where it was known as qahwaw translates to fitness or strength from Arabic.... Turkish style coffee has a unique place in history and is a special ritual in many households to this day. One thing is sure, since the Ottomans introduced it to the Eastern part of Europe, this coffee drinking style has influenced the culture of so many nations as it became the most popular beverage prepared in so many households. This style of coffee is consumed across Greece and the Balkan countries. The Greeks refer to it as Greek style coffee while in Serbia its called home-made or domestic coffee. Since 2013 Turkish coffee found its spot on Unescos Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list. At RAS Trade, we have been importing and distributing renowned coffee brands from Serbia for a few decades now. Unique taste, body and aroma define this popular beverage. It is the process behind blending, roasting, preparation and presentation that ensure an unforgettable experience. Some of our favourites include Grand Aroma Coffee and Grand Gold Coffee, Doncafe Moment, Doncafe Minas, Doncafe Strong,"C" Minas Coffee and Marni Minas ground coffee in various sizes.

08.01.2022 The story behind Negro the chimney sweep Liquorice flavoured Negro lollies by Pionir are popular among young and old for their sweet and soothing flavour. Ras Trade has been bringing sweet treats from Pionir to Australia for over two decades. Weve enjoyed every second of it! Negro is a long standing brand that was created back in the 1928 in a small workshop that was founded in 1917 in Subotica, tip of northern Serbia, by the Ruff brothers. ... The company went through the process of being nationalised after World War II and was renamed Pionir. The ownership was reinstated in 1998 and the company was re-born with heavy investment and reorganisation. Today this is a modern manufacturer with state of the art equipment, producing some of the most adored sweet treats, including the original Negro lollies. Located in northern Serbia in the town of Subotica near the Hungarian border, Pionir exports across Europe, Russia, USA, Canada and Australia. The chimney sweep (icon behind the Negro lollies) are thought to be bearers of luck and happiness. In Great Britain it is considered as lucky for a bride to see a chimney sweep on her wedding day, while in many countries across Europe it is considered good luck to rub or hold onto your buttons if you pass a chimney sweep in the street.

08.01.2022 Tradition of Slava If youve been invited to someones Slava (their familys patron saint day) you are in for a feast. Before we dive into the glorious traditional dishes, there are four things that are a must on the day of the Slava and these include the candle, the bread, cooked wheat and red wine. ... Those preparing for their Slava, like every year, know that plenty of cooking is ahead of them. It certainly requires an effort to create delicious dishes that range from pork spit, meat and cabbage rolls, cheese pies just to name a few. And then, therere heavenly home made chocolate delights, vanilla cream cakes, waffles and other carefully decorated deserts. Given the modern pace of life, Slava is about bringing together your closest family and friends, reconnecting and slowing down over some home-made food. Make sure your toast includes wishes for health, fertility and well-being of the family and the guests. Are you celebrating or have you been invited to someones Slava?

07.01.2022 Have you had Moskva snit? ( ) This cake was invented just over 40 years ago, in the heart of Belgrade in one of its most famous and oldest hotels, Hotel Moskva, where the cake gets its name. The talented pastry chef Ankica Dzepina invented the now famous Moskva snit back in 1974. She described the cake as fresh, compact and amply sweet with a harmony of fillings. It quickly became Belgrades equivalent of Viennas Sacher-Torte. ... Ever since then, generations have enjoyed this desert and recipes have been shared, altered, re-crafted and made over and over across the globe, everyone understandably, claiming their version is better than the original! This is a light cake made from sour cherries, pineapple and topped with almonds. Whether you are celebrating a special life milestone, want to surprise someone, getting friends together or simply searching for the perfect desert for a Sunday lunch, we kindly recommend Moskva snit.
