10.01.2022 GARDENING WITH BEN What a beautiful time to get your flower garden underway with Spring, and Summer just around the corner. Growing flowers and colour is not much different than your vegetable garden. You need to prepare the soil. Flowering plants also need nutrients. Seedlings are an advantage if you want to get early Spring colour. Walk through the Ravenshoe Hardware Garden Centre to see what Fiona has sourced from the nurseries. All seedlings are grown on the Tablela...nds. After planting out, a weak solution of liquid fertilizer is recommended either with a spray or watering can. There is an endless variety of seeds now available --- such as marigolds, nasturtium, calendula, Californian poppy, petunias and pansies. Bees also benefit from a choice of flowers. Fiona in the Garden Centre is available for advice, or call me on 54650134. In regard to your query Susan about growing lavender at Silver Valley. Yes, the climate would be OK. Lavender is hardy, and it grows well in the Mediterranean. Make sure it is well drained, and use mulch and fertilizer. But, I would suggest you grow it in pots for these reasons: You can regulate and control the growing conditions such as soil type and watering. Happy Gardening --- Ben See more

08.01.2022 GARDENING WITH BEN We’re into Spring, so now comes the important question: What shall we grow? Or what do we like to eat? My feeling is that we should grow what we usually eat, then as you get the hang of it try other products. The other decision is: Seeds or seedlings? Seeds are far more economical, and usually there is far more variety available from a nursery. I know that Ravenshoe Hardware is doing what it can to keep up its stock under the problems forced on us ...by the coronavirus. And Fiona at the Garden Centre has ordered in a new exciting range of seeds. Tablelands climate allows for the growing of most vegetables, but seeds take more time for fruition, or when children are involved seeds are far more exciting to watch. Beans, carrots, peas and pumpkins need a bit of space, in a corner somewhere. Try to stagger your planting, with seedlings, grow only six plants at a time. Follow up planting makes sense. While you are growing vegetables, give some thought to herbs like parsley and basil, get a punnet and grow them in a container. Fiona has a wonderful array of pots in the Ravenshoe Hardware nursery. The same goes for edible flowers like nasturtium, calendula’s and sunflowers all grown easily in containers. What is a must is tomatoes. Tommy toe, grosse lisse and tropica will grow well on the Tablelands. They will need staking. Eggplant, capsicum and cucumber are all good to grow on the Tablelands. Go out to the Ravenshoe Garden Centre it’s pleasant to just walk around check out what’s available in seeds and seedlings. You will be pleasantly surprised. And any queries, just ask Fiona. Happy gardening. Ben See more

07.01.2022 With relatives in lock-down in Melbourne and a beloved aunt and uncle in virus ravaged England, Ravenshoe Hardware owner, Linda Hooper, pulled out all stops to bring a bit of happiness in the form of internationally-inspired food to her wonderful staff that have all worked so hard during this rotten Covid year. So she prepared a scrumptious Melbourne Cup feast for the hardware team --- which was voted the true winner of the day. Enjoying some of Linda’s mouthwatering delights are June Baillie (centre), accounts, and Skye Adamson (right), sales. Linda, who was invited to hold the Melbourne Cup when she supported a Cancer Council fund-raiser at Karumba years ago, also backed this year’s winner of the Cup.

07.01.2022 GARDENING WITH BEN It’s spring time, and you and the family have decided to go to the garden centre to buy a plant or plants for the garden or your balcony. What you buy and the time that you plant can be a big influence on how successful your plant purchase will be. Most plants in garden centres apart from seedling punnets, are sold in 150mm or 200mm pots, 150mm is usually adequate as they are generally cheaper, easier to plant, and they soon catch up with larger plants. It’...s very different with patio or indoor plants, as they are usually placed in a decorative pot to make an instant statement. Fiona at the Ravenshoe Hardware Garden Centre has a constant supply of lovely pots for you to chose from. But your first job when you get home is to put your plant in a bucket of water, then carefully take it out of the pot that it was purchased in and untangle the roots, the roots tend to go around in circles so take care during this process. If possible gently wash away most of the old soil, then using a good quality potting mix put your new plant in your pot. If however it is to be planted directly into your garden, dig a hole three or four times wider than the pot it was purchased in, but never deeper. Fill with good quality soil or potting mix, then water well. If you find a plant in a pot with the roots packed, try untangling the roots, you may have to do some vertical cutting from top to bottom to allow new shoots to form. Place in good soil and water in well. Fiona at the Ravenshoe Hardware Garden Centre will help you with advise on your plant purchases. Meanwhile if anyone wants to drop me a line on gardening advise my address is; Mr B. Nader Unit 2A Tabeel Retirement Village 91 Alfred st. Laidley 4341 Or phone on 54650134 Good luck and good gardening Ben See more

03.01.2022 GARDENING WITH BEN Lavender is a delight in any garden, it can be used as a border or low hedge, or can be grown in pots. Lavender is such a versatile plant, you can use it in the kitchen, in the linen cabinet, or as a medicinal plant. It’s also very tough and hardy when established. Here where I live in Laidley, we have had no rain for six months, they are thriving. As I walked past an elderly ladies home, who I chat to on my walks, she gave me some lavender cuttings . I us...ed some hormone powder and placed them in a medium sized plastic sealed container, five weeks later they were ready to be potted up, I used a seed raising mixture for the immature plants. Now of course came the decision , what can I do with them. There is no garden here to speak of at the retirement home where I now live, just a few containers with snapdragons, mini sunflowers and pansies. About fifty metres from my place, is a traffic roundabout, with a beautiful Queensland Bottle Tree in the middle of it, it’s surrounded by horrible looking Agaves. I suggested to the maintenance people that they should get rid of all of that rubbish surrounding the tree, and that I would grow the annuals for them to plant. But the maintenance people went into shock at the suggestion as it meant work for them. We need Rhonda from TRC down here. Another native plant that is doing very well here is Calistemon Captain Cook Bottlebrush, they are everywhere here, and will grow in many other areas. Now is a good time to feed your plants, there is a good choice of soluable products available, where you just add water, whatever you decide to use always read the label and watering instructions. Do yourself a favour have a walk through Ravenshoe Hardware Garden Centre, Fiona and the staff would love to see you. My phone number is 54650134 if anyone wants to call me about gardening advice.
