02.01.2022 This little rabbit is chewing on twigs off a bush, and handily demonstrating both a benefit of longhorns and from our experience, one of their only weaknesses. ...Longhorns are well known for their hardiness and ability to utilise a wide range of forage sources (known as browse utilisation). They eat all sorts of low quality matter that many breeds would not, a trait that sustains them in poor country and bad times. This quality however, makes them a little more susceptible to a condition known as woody (or wooden) tongue. Woody tongue is where the animal gets bacteria in the soft tissues in their mouth or tongue via a tiny wound or trauma, which can be caused by stuff like [drum roll ] eating things like sticks and twigs. The tongue or jaw swell initially but it can spread to other muscles and organs and become nasty. It's easily treated by IV injection and if picked up early, cattle recover very quickly. We know the very early indicators and treat maybe 1 animal every 2-3 years.
