25.01.2022 Just took Dizzy Izzy and her owner out to the dog wash. Pets make great companions for young people doing it a bit tough. Our mates at Rainbow Paws Program help out with health care, pet food and things like winter coats for pets in need - if you’re an animal lover, please help Rainbow Paws to help the pets. Izzy felt much better after a bath and blow dry today!

24.01.2022 Ohmygoodness, loaded burgers with the lot from Young Master Chef this week. Apparently he’s thinking about a future business called Billy’s* Kustom Burgers & Hot Rods He plans to keep on cooking, become a motor vehicle engineer, and sell burgers to people as a side gig from the workshop. ... What’s not to love about that? Are you feeling hungry? *Billy - we’ve had to change his name so he’s not mobbed by ravenous burger-hunters!

24.01.2022 The RiotACT have shared some great ideas for the upcoming long weekend! Wine not head out to Mount Majura Vineyard, who are donating $10 from each tasting to Raw Potential! #supportlocal #makeadifference #longweekend

21.01.2022 We’re focusing on some beautiful weather this weekend! Welcome Spring...it’s growing season!

19.01.2022 While many youth services shut up shop during the #COVID-19 pandemic, Raw Potential, Woden Community Service, and the Woden Youth Centre hit the streets of #Canberra at a time when the city’s most at-risk kids needed them. Check out the recent article featuring our chairperson, Paul Kane below! #makeadifference #youthempowerment

18.01.2022 Can you guess what this is?

18.01.2022 Jobs Fair is coming up! We’ll be helping some of our young people get out there to explore the possibilities!

16.01.2022 It’s only a matter of hours away... We’ve got some exciting news! Stay tuned... It’s only a matter of hours away... We’ve got some exciting news! Stay tuned...

15.01.2022 Tada! Our awesome street work van is finally here, thanks to our generous sponsors and the Canberra community. Give us a wave if you see us out and about!

15.01.2022 We’ve dropped in to JobsFair with some of our young people to check out the great employment and support opportunities available. It’s not too late to register for the afternoon sessions on Appreticeships and Traineeships, or to get some great info on joining the Defence Forces ... Construction Industry Community Services Finance AFP (including free workout and training schedules for how to get in shape to pass the beep test and other fitness requirements for entry). Retail, hairdressing & hospitality Register for the sessions, or just turn up: https://fb.me/e/5ZwNrH88a

14.01.2022 Already the young people we support are panicking about how they’re going to manage again once their Centrelink rate is cut from tomorrow. Things they did with the extra Covid payments: Ate proper meals... Bought adequate shoes Saw a dentist Got the brakes done on the car Bought themselves little luxuries - like a heater, fresh strawberries, and a haircut. Youth Allowance for job seekers for someone over 18 living away from home is only $462.50 PER FORTNIGHT, plus rent assistance and energy supplement. According to ACOSS and NSW University’s 2020 report on poverty in Australia, this leaves young people 168 per week BELOW the poverty line. It’s not okay With the loss of thousands upon thousands of entry-level jobs, the distress is real. Our young people, and others on Centrelink payments are about to take a $300 per fortnight hit to their finances. Please join the campaign to #raisetherate Www.raisetherate.org.au

13.01.2022 We’ve got a few tomatoes in! Have you? Growing potted veggies is an easy way to have fresh home-grown produce to eat and share with a mate - even if you live in an apartment. ... Eating healthy fresh food is a real challenge if you’re homeless, but put a roof over their heads and voila! Our young people love looking after their tomatoes...and cactus...and herbs! If you have a backyard or verandah veggie patch and you have an excess of the good stuff, the team of volunteers at St John's Care at Reid love sharing it with people in need who find it hard to afford fresh food or who can’t grow their own. Drop your extra home-grown veggies in and help others eat well! You can drop home grown fruit and veg to St Johns Care - next to St Johns Church, 45 Constitution Ave, Reid between 9.30am and 2pm Monday to Friday!

12.01.2022 Happy Easter and enjoy the break, peeps!

12.01.2022 We're thrilled to announce an exciting new partnership with Woden Community Service supporting our very important work with at-risk and vulnerable youth across Canberra. #youngpeople #localsupport #Canberra #youthempowerment

12.01.2022 Bindi grew up in foster care, spent her teens in and out of refuges, and has spent the last 3 years couch-surfing and sleeping in parks. She describes it as "terrifying". Bindi was assigned male at birth, and her 15 year old mum wasn't in a position to care for them. As a young boy, he was very violent, always "punching-on" with anyone, kicked out of lots of schools, self-harming by burning his skin, and getting into trouble. Big trouble. Bindi ended up caught up in armed ...robberies and has spent time in both juvie and adult prison. Upon getting some counselling support, Bindi was finally able to articulate that despite looking like a man, with a history of being a thug, she was actually scared, gentle and liked pretty things. Being in prison with adult men was the "worst thing a girl could go through". Meeting up with Bindi this week was a blast from the past - I knew him a decade ago as Brandon. It's been a pleasure to meet Bindi and learn about how she's struggled to understand the complexities of being trans, and how threatening the world has been, and how her response in the past was to be the tough guy, when in reality she's a gentle soul - and the front was quietly killing her. Young people who are struggling with gender identity can access help from a number of support services around town. Raw Potential can support them with referrals and acceptance and a kind and safe place to catch-up. Working with gender-diverse young people seems to be on the increase. We don't know if it's because young people feel safer to express themselves, or because they've become more unsafe and need more help. Either way, Raw Potential and other welcoming organisations provide non-judgemental, holistic support to pursue a positive future. Tomorrow is International Transgender Day of Remembrance - with an online event to remember those who have suffered or lost their lives to transphobic violence. Light a candle, stand with the community and not only remember those lost, but also those coming to terms with being gender diverse or trans. You can participate by joining a live Facebook event https://www.facebook.com/events/831246300955954/

11.01.2022 . Finally....Two of our young people who spent the cold Canberra winter living in a tent, just signed the lease and got the keys to their new home! Many thanks to CHC Affordable Housing for making it possible.

09.01.2022 Huuuuuuuuuuuuge shoutout and thank you to MBK.Upcycle for the very special computer thingy repair job. It works so well, the young person is over the moon. Thank you!

06.01.2022 How gorgeous is this National Child Protection Week colouring and activity sheet based on artwork from Luke Duffy, Kalkadoon Digital Artist, Queensland!? The artwork depicts this year’s theme: Putting Children First. It shows Elders, family, services and community supporting kids each step of the way, showing leadership and guidance so that the path is never broken and remains strong and healthy. If you'd like to download it, you can find it on the NAPCAN website here: https://www.napcan.org.au/activity-sheet-to-create-meaning/

05.01.2022 Now that I’m cooking and I’m making awesome stuff I feel really proud because my dad hugs me and says it’s great. It makes me feel so good. - young guy, 15 years old Satay chicken skewers... Honey-soy chicken skewers Very special fried rice Many thanks to St John's Care for the ingredients that are building self-esteem, confidence, skills and great healthy meals.

02.01.2022 5000 5,000 people in rental debt in the ACT and potentially up for eviction once the moratorium on evictions ends shortly. I know some of those are young people Raw Potential supports in private rentals...at risk of homelessness once again. ... ‘Camping’ and other rough sleeping situations aren’t safe or acceptable options. But even on the High Needs public housing waitlist in the ACT there’s about a 2-3 year wait. For young people, a home is the difference between completing school, or not. Holding down a job, or not. A future of good health, and good mental health, or not. The impact of homelessness continues well beyond the immediate situation. It can take decades to recover - the issues are complex. Please support investment in social housing, especially for young people. If we get them off to a good start, they will rise, succeed and contribute to our community as they build their futures! PS the young people we support have, with a little help, been proactive about negotiating payment plans. Fingers crossed their tenancies can be sustained. https://www.theguardian.com//australias-rent-bomb-risk-mea

02.01.2022 It’s national child protection week - play your part! Lots of resources and webinars on their website. We’re getting involved, are you?

01.01.2022 Fantastic start to a much needed refuge program for under 16’s. So many are couch surfing, staying at a mate’s place or just drifting around, unsafe and not knowing how to get help or reunite with families. https://www.abc.net.au//canberra-refuge-for-chil/12647954
