25.01.2022 Thsi Sunday 22nd November is the last public open day for the year,. We have tours booked for next week and December and volunteers still coming in on Thursday mornings. There will be some historical books availlable for sale - new and used. Will post some photos before the weekend.

24.01.2022 Glorious day for Remembrance Day today at ANZAC Park, Raymond Terrace. Little wind to make the flags fly, but there was a flyover at exactly 11.00.00 am. Covid restrictions applied, but it was good for the ceremony to take place after missing out on ANZAC day. Lest We Forget.

24.01.2022 Thank you to those who have registered to audition, Males, please dont be shy and have a go. Auditioners will be contacted after our meeting on Thursday evening, with more details and test script.. Please register by Wednesday 9th to be included.

23.01.2022 Guess where this Wool Press is going. To a wool shed in Merriwa. The Merriwa Museum will put it on display in good time. It has been a long haul to rehome this wool press which is not from this area. Thanks to the extra manpower (6 men) who came today to get the press out of the property and onto a vehicle which drove four hours to pick it up. We look forward to re-organising our machinery and tool shed so the artefacts are back on display again in 2021. Photo shows bottom half only.

22.01.2022 Next Sunday 23rd August is looking good for open day with no local Covid cases. It might be cool but the welcome will be warm. You will be asked to sanitize, and leave contact details before you can discover what is inside.

20.01.2022 Its Volunteer week this week. Thank you to all our volunteers - we cant exist without you. If you would like to join the Society and become a volunteer, you can choose how you would like to get involved with like minded people. Whether in the research room, or at the Cottage and Museum, its up to you, even if just to help on special event days when more people to help makes it easier for everyone. 20.01.2022 You can help us put together a time capsule we are creating on Sunday 27 September at Sketchley Cottage & Museum. The intention is to open this again in five years in 2025 to see what has changed. Please send us your one page story (max 500 words) of what 2020 means to you. What has changed for your personally? What are you looking forward to? What changes would you like to see by 2025? This can relate to shopping, doing business, work, meetings, learning, celebrations,... attending events, family visits. Your choice. We would like to print the page for display at the cottage showing your first name only. Your submission by email also needs to include your name and surname, suburb, phone number and email before 17 September. You will be invited to attend the review in 5 years time. 20.01.2022 A River Runs Beside It was produced in October 2020.. Here is a brief snapshot of the experience of the people involved in the production. Thanks to Port Stephens Council for supporting this project.

18.01.2022 It really is time to get these gardeners outdoors again. We are happy to welcome visitors again on Sunday 28 June from 10 am to 2 pm. There will be extra volunteers on hand to ensure visitors can be guided around the premises while keeping distancing from others. You will also be required to record your name and contact details. We cant wait to see people looking around again at what local life was like for pioneers, in the fully furnished timber slab cottage, as well as other artifacts on display in the out buildings.

17.01.2022 Yes, the Jacaranda trees just down the road will be another reason to visit us this weekend on Sunday. Just 500 metres away from Sketchley Cottage.

17.01.2022 The Society's micro fiche reader stopped working quite some time ago. The research room has many micro reels, including the Raymond Terrace Examiner from 1955 to 1979, years which are not recorded on Trove. So the information stored on these reels is inaccessible at the moment. Does anybody know where we could find a reader that is no longer required, or could be borrowed? It has been difficult to find funding for a new or reconditioned one, given it is considered "office equipment". Suggestions welcome. The modern machines can convert the information to digital files for storage for the future.

16.01.2022 After our meeting yesterday, it was decided to cancel the Trivia night set for October. Currently the max number of people is 42 in the hall, and social distancing is not possible for team answers usually discussed at close quarters. Hopefully we can have one early next year. We can still have open days at the cottage though - next one Sunday 22nd August.

12.01.2022 Auditions are being held on Saturday morning 12 September in Raymond Terrace. Looking for male and female actors from 14 years and older to take part in an historic dramatized walk from Riverside Park to King Street. Practices will be held in weekends from 18 September to final rehearsal 10 October. Two outdoor performances lasting one hour will be on Sunday 11 October. 12.01.2022 Welcome to our new followers, and thank you for the visitors to our cottage last Sunday - usually mid winter just brings in a couple of people, but 24 came through. King Street was the original main business street of Raymond Terrace, until after the big flood (Maitland Flood) of 1955 when businesses moved to William Street on higher ground.

08.01.2022 We missed the annual visit from the Yugawa students from Japan this year. We hope they are doing OK in their home town and look forward to more exchange students in the future.

06.01.2022 The Research room volunteers are back, and some work was quietly done from home. However, due to current social distancing requirements, we are unable to accept visitors for now, as the working space is not large. If you have any research queries, please email [email protected] or call them by phone 4983 1918 on Mondays or Wednesdays from 9.30 am to 2 pm and they may be able to help you. The second photo shows you how there is always stuff to do and sort, even for those with little historical knowledge. New volunteers are always welcome.

Social distancing rules at the time restricted interaction by the actors and also the number of people who could take part, or join the walk. University of Newcastle students spent some time early this year exploring our town, visiting the research room and Sketchley Cottage and researching through archives held in Newcastle. We are fortunate to be able to view their work and wonderful collections of photos collated in the reports. 02.01.2022 The article in the photo was posted recently by a local, Robyn Hall. Moira Saunderson who was President at the time advises that a delegation from the Society was taken to the site by the Water Board (now Hunter Water, the current owner of that land) and were reassured that the proposed increase in the dam capacity would not come near the remains of James Kings pottery kilns. Moira. a Foundation member since 1974, is still going strong, attending the Research room every week as well as at the Cottage on Thursdays. A book is presently being compiled by two other members about James King and is up to proof reading stage. We will keep you posted.

02.01.2022 Thank you for the new likes which have been coming in, even while not much has been happening to report. Volunteers have been back on site, and we have an open house on this Sunday. Be aware that we will need to take contact tracing details from any visitors and require you to sanitize before entering.
