25.01.2022 Thank you for the new likes which have been coming in, even while not much has been happening to report. Volunteers have been back on site, and we have an open house on this Sunday. We cant wait until we can talk to you in person. Pictured is Pia, our curator at a previous event at the cottage.

25.01.2022 Do you have something to celebrate? We can cater for small gatherings where you can have HIgh Tea or Devonshire Tea seated outdoors under cover for up to 16 people. Fresh air is the best thing in these times. For enquiries call Pia 0428 886 170.

25.01.2022 After our meeting yesterday, it was decided to cancel the Trivia night set for October. Currently the max number of people is 42 in the hall, and social distancing is not possible for team answers usually discussed at close quarters. Hopefully we can have one early next year. We can still have open days at the cottage though - next one Sunday 22nd August.

24.01.2022 UPDATE. Due to overnight new cases in Port Stephens, the Cottage will be CLOSED on Sunday 26 July. Our resident gardeners have been hibernating inside and havent done a thing - looking very relaxed. Thankfully, volunteers have been along to get the grass mowed and paths swept ready for Open day at the Cottage and Museum on Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm. Be aware that we will need to take contact tracing details from any visitors and require you to sanitize before entering. 23.01.2022 Its Volunteer week this week. Thank you to all our volunteers - we cant exist without you. If you would like to join the Society and become a volunteer, you can choose how you would like to get involved with like minded people. Whether in the research room, or at the Cottage and Museum, its up to you, even if just to help on special event days when more people to help makes it easier for everyone. Enquiries email Laraine, at [email protected].

22.01.2022 Check out the article and photo of Pia on page 7 about the Time Capsule. We know some people are planning a contribution, but it would be nice to get some in hand in plenty of time. Thank you.

21.01.2022 A gentle reminder that we would love your written thoughts on 2020. What do you expect will have changed by 2025 when our Time Capsule is opened and reviewed again? Feel free to drop your submission into Sketchley Cottage on Thursday morning. Otherwise please email it soon to Pia at [email protected]. No more than 500 words, but even one paragraph on a particular topic would be welcome. Contributions will be on display at our open day on Sunday 27 September before being closed up in the time capsule/

21.01.2022 A River Runs Beside It, Historical Dramatized Walk was finally delivered today in perfect conditions. While the recently produced walk brochure focuses on historic buildings and landmarks, this production was about bringing to life, stories about people and things that happened. Because of Covid, only 20 people could attend which included 10 cast and crew. A short video will be available in a few weeks. Thank you to Tracey Edstein, for being scriptwriter and narrating the walk, and Talia Goodwin who directed it, plus Kaye Newton who produced it. Made possible with a Port Stephens Council Cultural Projects grant to the Historical Society.

21.01.2022 The final stop in the historic dramatized walk is here by the Marriage trees in King Street.

21.01.2022 It may be mid-winter, but this door will be open on Sunday. Please drop in and say hello. The Pioneer Cottage and museum will be open from 10 am to 2 pm. The public open day is every fourth Sunday. Visits or group tours at other times are by prior appointment.

21.01.2022 Thank you to those who have registered to audition, Males, please dont be shy and have a go. Auditioners will be contacted after our meeting on Thursday evening, with more details and test script.. Please register by Wednesday 9th to be included.

21.01.2022 Next Sunday 23rd August is looking good for open day with no local Covid cases. It might be cool but the welcome will be warm. You will be asked to sanitize, and leave contact details before you can discover what is inside.

20.01.2022 At last we have an updated Raymond Terrace Historic Town Walk printed with the help of Port Stephens Council. The information about each spot is on the back, not pictured. Copies of this walk are available at Sketchley Pioneer Cottage, and will also be at the Raymond Terrace Library and the Visitor Information Center at Nelson Bay. Also there is an online version of the walk on Google maps. Here is the link so you can check it on your device. Clicking on each place number will show a couple of photos and a brief description of each place of interest. https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit

19.01.2022 It's been a busy month. A new sign has gone up outside the cottage thanks to a heritage grant from Port Stephens Council. Also pictured is Pia, literally rugged up on the last cruise of William the IVth on the day of the King St Heritage Festival on 15 May. We also had 100 students come through our place from a local primary school that week. Enquiries for groups or school visits are welcome. Call Pia 0428 886 170.

19.01.2022 It really is time to get these gardeners outdoors again. We are happy to welcome visitors again on Sunday 28 June from 10 am to 2 pm. There will be extra volunteers on hand to ensure visitors can be guided around the premises while keeping distancing from others. You will also be required to record your name and contact details. We cant wait to see people looking around again at what local life was like for pioneers, in the fully furnished timber slab cottage, as well as other artifacts on display in the out buildings.

19.01.2022 The Research room volunteers are back, and some work was quietly done from home. However, due to current social distancing requirements, we are unable to accept visitors for now, as the working space is not large. If you have any research queries, please email [email protected] or call them by phone 4983 1918 on Mondays or Wednesdays from 9.30 am to 2 pm and they may be able to help you. The second photo shows you how there is always stuff to do and sort, even for those with little historical knowledge. New volunteers are always welcome.

17.01.2022 On Sunday there will be a box of old books, mainly large ones with lots of pictures, for sale cheap at Sketchley Pioneer Cottage and Museum. Here is a selection of them. First in on Sunday gets the best choice. Open from 10 am to 2 pm.

15.01.2022 In this week's local Examiner newspaper.

15.01.2022 The article in the photo was posted recently by a local, Robyn Hall. Moira Saunderson who was President at the time advises that a delegation from the Society was taken to the site by the Water Board (now Hunter Water, the current owner of that land) and were reassured that the proposed increase in the dam capacity would not come near the remains of James Kings pottery kilns. Moira. a Foundation member since 1974, is still going strong, attending the Research room every week as well as at the Cottage on Thursdays. A book is presently being compiled by two other members about James King and is up to proof reading stage. We will keep you posted.

15.01.2022 APOLOGIES. Due to overnight new cases in Port Stephens, the Cottage will NOT open this Sunday. Both to protect any visitors, and our Volunteers. Thank you.

13.01.2022 Nothing like dressing up to bring out the smiles. At Step Back into King Street Heritage Festival in Raymond Terrace today.

11.01.2022 A River Runs Beside It was produced in October 2020.. Here is a brief snapshot of the experience of the people involved in the production. Thanks to Port Stephens Council for supporting this project.

11.01.2022 Another great Heritage Festival thanks to the Rotary Club of Raymond Terrace Inc and our wonderful community. This year we were back with a bang! Starting the d...ay greeting the fantastic William the Fourth, Paddlewheel steamer docking in at 10 am offloading cargo and greeting locals. Then over to Uncle John Ridgeway for his beautiful welcome to country and tribute to the Worimi nation. It was delightful to hear the cannon fire marking the official opening, then to have it proceeded with a fantastic performance by the talented students of Irrawang High School. It was also great to see St John’s Ambulance, which does so much to keep us safe and help events like this occur. And young Charlie, who is celebrating her eighth birthday today styling a lovely bag. (if I do say so myself) Be sure to go and see the great market stalls and support our festival. Great job, everyone, for helping pull this together. 11.01.2022 Grab a cup of tea while you digest the resources created here. University of Newcastle students spent some time early this year exploring our town, visiting the research room and Sketchley Cottage and researching through archives held in Newcastle. We are fortunate to be able to view their work and wonderful collections of photos collated in the reports. Thanks to Dr Heather Sharp and Yvonne Fletcher for instigating and guiding this project and for choosing Raymond Terrace as the subject of this endeavour. https://hunterlivinghistories.com/2020/05/11/rt/

11.01.2022 Yes, the Jacaranda trees just down the road will be another reason to visit us this weekend on Sunday. Just 500 metres away from Sketchley Cottage.

11.01.2022 We have our Covid Safe plan ready. Please be aware that you will need to provide your name and contact details when you visit the Cottage. This information is collected only for the purposes of being able to do contact tracing if needed. Looking forward to finally being open to the public this Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm. Thank you for your understanding.

11.01.2022 We missed the annual visit from the Yugawa students from Japan this year. We hope they are doing OK in their home town and look forward to more exchange students in the future.

10.01.2022 The Society's micro fiche reader stopped working quite some time ago. The research room has many micro reels, including the Raymond Terrace Examiner from 1955 to 1979, years which are not recorded on Trove. So the information stored on these reels is inaccessible at the moment. Does anybody know where we could find a reader that is no longer required, or could be borrowed? It has been difficult to find funding for a new or reconditioned one, given it is considered "office equipment". Suggestions welcome. The modern machines can convert the information to digital files for storage for the future.

10.01.2022 Not as windy as yesterday, but the courtyard is relatively sheltered. A table will be set up so your child can make a drawing or write something to put in the Time Capsule today at Sketchley Cottage.

10.01.2022 The door is shut now, but it will be open this Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm. It could be showery, but it will be dry inside. Welcome in.

10.01.2022 Given this was a public post, am sharing it here, in case any descendants follow this page who would like to connect.

09.01.2022 Thank you to all our members and volunteers for braving the cold and windy conditions at the King street Heritage festival Cheers Pia

09.01.2022 Glorious day for Remembrance Day today at ANZAC Park, Raymond Terrace. Little wind to make the flags fly, but there was a flyover at exactly 11.00.00 am. Covid restrictions applied, but it was good for the ceremony to take place after missing out on ANZAC day. Lest We Forget.

09.01.2022 Come on down. It might be blustery on the street, but surprisingly sheltered and even warm in the sunshine in the courtyard. Pia, our Currator is spinning some alpaca.

07.01.2022 Here is a clipped run through of the stories and narration from the performances of A River Runs Beside It in October 2020. Social distancing rules at the time restricted interaction by the actors and also the number of people who could take part, or join the walk. Thanks to Port Stephens Council for supporting this project.. A dramatized walk from Riverside Park to King Street, Raymond Terrace. The top photos shows the pram which carried the props from site to site. Thank you Billy Ptolemy for making this video as well as the behind the scenes one already posted.

06.01.2022 Congratulations to Stroud & District Historical Society for turning 50. They are older than us. Our Society formed in 1974, 46 years ago.

06.01.2022 This may be of interest to some followers. Free online event.

05.01.2022 Respect and Remembrance.

03.01.2022 Thsi Sunday 22nd November is the last public open day for the year,. We have tours booked for next week and December and volunteers still coming in on Thursday mornings. There will be some historical books availlable for sale - new and used. Will post some photos before the weekend.

02.01.2022 A delightful photo shared by Hugh-Angus Bright, with the following description. Myrtle Elkin nee Jones, 25th September 1925 at her wedding to Ray Elkin or Woodlands, Raymond Terrace. Their daughter, Pauline, is Mrs Meredith, who taught many Raymond Terrace children! With Ella is her sister, Nell (Kirkby). The photo is owned by Norma Jones, her niece,

02.01.2022 Now is the time to put your experience of 2020 to paper. You can email it to Pia along with your contact details, or even drop in this Sunday at the Cottage open day from 10 am to 2 pm to hand in your perspective.

01.01.2022 Welcome to our new followers, and thank you for the visitors to our cottage last Sunday - usually mid winter just brings in a couple of people, but 24 came through. King Street was the original main business street of Raymond Terrace, until after the big flood (Maitland Flood) of 1955 when businesses moved to William Street on higher ground.

01.01.2022 Its open, fine, a little cool, no wind. We are welcoming a group from Cessnock right now, but we are open until 2 pm. Come and say hello (at a suitable distance).
