05.01.2022 #throwbackthursday #locallegendsedition The man behind the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary Alexander Griffins moved to Currumbin with his family in 1947. He was an experienced Bee Keeper who sold honey & flowers to the locals in the area.... After his produce started capturing the attention of nearby lorikeets and honeyeaters, Alex began feeding the birds to distract them away from his delicate flowers. Over time, visitors would arrive, not only to buy the Griffiths familys’ produce, but to watch the spectacle of hundreds of birds enjoying their daily feed. Alexanders passion for native wildlife flourished, and after acquiring the land and resources, the once small kiosk was transformed into a wildlife haven. Like his friend in West Burleigh, David Fleay, Alex provided support and a permament home to many native animals requiring assistance. Alexander donated the Sanctuary to the National Trust of Queensland in 1976. Today, it is the most coveted wildlife attraction on the Gold Coast, providing a safe home and care to thousands and native animals.
