24.01.2022 Iron ore has become the first Australian commodity to achieve more than $100 billion a year in export value. Almost all of our iron ore is mined and exported fr...om the great State of Western Australia. The continued strength of our resources sector has been incredibly important in underpinning the comparative strength and resilience of our economy throughout this coronavirus induced crisis. We have continued to perform strongly, with high export volumes at a time of comparatively higher prices. The recent Resources Energy Quarterly has revealed total industry exports will reach around $293 billion for the 2019-20 financial year. The resources industry has not been immune to economic downturn caused by COVID-19, but it is still making an enormous contribution. Lets keep mining strong.

20.01.2022 COBURN HEAVY MINERAL SANDS PROJECT Plans to develop the worlds largest mineral sands project near Shark Bay have received a major boost, after the project rece...ived an $150 million loan from the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility. Strandline Resources says it will work to secure the other half of the money needed over the next few months, before construction can begin. Managing Director Luke Graham says the zircon and titanium operation will create 315 jobs during construction. There will be 190 jobs during operation, with the focus on a drive-in, drive-out workforce, rather than FIFO, he says. "As soon as we lock down financing we are off, and thats the construction," he says. "It will typically take about 18 months to construct because it is a major project, and then the ongoing operations (will continue) for quite a long life."

19.01.2022 Lots of noise around China putting measures in place to restrict imports from Australia in the last few days. Its certainly possible they could extend this to Iron Ore, although the quote below summarises why the market is generally less concerned with Iron Ore, compared with other commodities. "If this does evolve from the food space, it can branch into coal again and I think thats where the risk," he explained. "China is about 85 per cent import dependent when it comes to... iron ore so for them to target imports... it would not be in their best interests. "When it comes to coal, China is about 95 per cent self sufficient for thermal coal and 85 per cent self sufficient for coking coal." 17.01.2022 EPA GIVES GREEN LIGHT TO EIGHTY MILE BEACH ENERGY PROJECT WAs Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has given approval -with conditions - to a major rene...wable energy project, about 270km southwest of Broome. Called the "Asian Renewable Energy Hub" its been developed by a consortium of Australian and overseas companies including Macquarie Group, Intercontinental Energy, Vestas and CWP Energy Asia. It would become Australias biggest solar and wind energy project if built and export electricity to South East Asia via subsea cables. The project involves 1700 wind turbines and solar panels, with a transmission cable corridor to the coast and subsea cables to the edge of state waters. The EPA has completed its assessment of NW Interconnected Power Pty Ltds proposal to construct and operate a large-scale renewable energy project with an expected operational lifespan of 50 years, EPA Chairman Dr Tom Hatton says. One of the key environmental issues the EPA considered was the proposed clearing of 11,962 hectares of native vegetation, and its potential impact on fauna habitat, flora and vegetation." The EPA also considered the potential impact from the construction and operation of four sub-sea cables on benthic communities and habitat, marine environmental quality and marine fauna. The Environment Minister will make a final decision on the project, which will generate thousands of jobs during its 10-year construction period. Dr Hatton, says the company will have to meet several conditions, including limiting any impact on nearby migratory birds, and improving fire management in the area. The EPAs final report is now open for a two-week public appeal period, closing 18 May 2020. The first round of public comment was sought in May 2019.

15.01.2022 AFFORDABLE LAND PACKAGE The State Governments hopes a $116 million regional land package will encourage more fly-in fly out workers to permanently move to Weste...rn Australia. Under the Regional Land Booster package the government has reduced the price of 1,095 residential and commercial lots around the state. In Karratha the Regional Land Booster package will apply to 376 lots, with prices starting at $95,000. The package will also apply to areas in Newman, Onslow, South Hedland and Port Hedland. With WAs state borders still closed due to COVID-19 many mining companies in the Pilbara region have moved to establishing residential workforce. Lands Minister Ben Wyatt said he hopes now that these workers have experienced the Western Australian way of life theyll chose to stay. "As the Premier has said hes keen for those Eastern Staters who happen to be living here in Western Australia now to stay," he said. "Buy a block of land, build a house, were happy to support you."

11.01.2022 FRACKING AGREEMENT REACHED Native title holders in the West Kimberley have signed an Indigenous Land Use Agreement with a petroleum exploration company that wil...l allow the use of fracking south-east of Broome. Theia Energy has been negotiating with the Karajarri people for more than a year, to gain necessary approval for their Great Sandy Desert Project, with an agreement signed off on Friday. The ABC obtained a conceptual plan of the project last year that showed a network of wells pipelines and even a new port on the Kimberley coast. But Theia chief operating officer Jop van Hattum said that was not what was being proposed at Fridays meeting, and initially just one well will be drilled and fracked in 2022. Mr van Hattum said the agreements will provide economic opportunities and control to the native title holders. "Karajarri people first of all have a lot of control on where well-pads are being established, where pipelines are being established, that their cultural heritage is being protected," Mr van Hattum said. Karajarri Traditional Lands Association executive officer Martin Bin Rashid said the agreements provided an opportunity for Indigenous people and would protect the environment. "We see this as an opportunity to take Karajarri forward, were confident that if fracking is done correctly it is low impact."

10.01.2022 $3.1 MILLION STIMULUS PACKAGE FOR TOWN OF PORT HEDLAND * Rates, fees, and charges will be frozen for 2020/21; * Small businesses and community groups will be el...igible for $10,000 grants; * Payment terms for Town of Port Hedland accounts will be reduced to 15 days; * Partial payments will be considered to help businesses fulfill contracts Commissioner of the Town of Port Hedland, Fred Riebeling, says if the economic situation continues to worsen, in July a second stimulus package will be considered and announced later in the year. "This is our response to the hardship that people are now facing," Mr Riebeling said. "If people are having problems paying rates and the likes, there are hardship provisions already in our system to examine putting off payments and coming to other agreements and the like in relation to debt. "Weve got a similar system in relation to properties we own - so that companies, if theyre suffering or having problems, can come to us and well look at it under the exceptional circumstances policy."

02.01.2022 Driven by stronger exports, Western Australia recorded the fastest nominal economic growth up 13.1 per cent over the year to March according to the latest CommS...ec State of the States report. Economic activity in WA was 22.7 per cent above the normal level of output, the second highest activity rate behind Victoria. Importantly business investment continues to be the strongest in the country. Equipment investment was up 19.2 per cent compared to a year ago in Western Australia, the highest level in more than six years. Dont forget that the Government announced a six month extension to the Instant Asset Write-Off to 31 December 2020. The threshold has also temporarily increased from $30,000 to $150,000 and expanded access to include all businesses with aggregated annual turnover of less than $500 million (up from $50 million). Another encouraging sign is that Western Australias annual population growth of 1.13 per cent is the fastest rate in 5 years. The agreement recognises the shared values and close relationship between Australia and the Federal Republic of Germany. Both sides acknowledging the valuable cooperation in energy research over many years, as well as the significant potential of both countries in the production, storage, transport and use of hydrogen produced from renewables.
