23.01.2022 Just in case you didn't know. Feeding our native wildlife is actually quite harmful to them. Let's keep them safe

21.01.2022 If you find an orphaned joey it is crucial that the joey receives immediate professional care to ensure the best chance of survival The joey below was bro...ught in to us from a person who had every intention of raising it themselves (which is illegal in Western Australia). The joey had life-threatening injuries to her eyes caused by gravel on the road, as well as many contusions over her body all of which were immediately identified by one of our licenced macropod rehabilitators. Had this joey been left without professional care she would have lost her sight and would need to be euthanised. Orphaned joeys are extremely fragile and should only be cared for by a professional licensed rehabilitator who can ensure that the little ones are appropriately assessed and treated. If you find a deceased kangaroo with a joey, you need to urgently have the joey brought into a rehabilitation centre or veterinary hospital. Additionally you can contact Wildlife Australia who are available 24 hours a day on 0477 454 799.

21.01.2022 A transFURmation worth celebrating! Meet Baldilocks a quenda who was suffering terrible mange before being successfully treated at the Darling Range Wildl...ife Shelter WA Baldilocks is one of more than 50 quendas who have benefitted from treatment at the shelter in recent months and we’re thrilled DRWS’s efforts are being acknowledged with an RSPCA WA Animal Welfare Award nomination! The shelter is leading the way in WA on this contagious disease in quenda, successfully identifying the disease and developing a treatment plan, which is administered twice-daily by their amazing volunteers. The shelter has also worked to trap and treat more than 100 quenda with mild symptoms from local populations. What an incredible effort to protect these little marsupials, who are listed as a priority for conservation! Do you know of an individual or a group, like DRWS, doing great work to help animals, or raise awareness of welfare issues in WA? Nominate them for the Community Action Award! 08.01.2022 DUCKLINGS ON THE MOVE It's that time of year again! Ducks and their fluffy ducklings are beginning to leave their nests in search of the nearest wetlands, a...nd we ask that motorists and cyclists be cautious of duck families on the move. Mother ducks often nest in tree hollows and shrubs a considerable distance away from wetlands. Once ducklings have hatched, the families have to walk to their preferred habitat, which can be challenging as it often means crossing busy roads. It is best not to interfere or try to pick the birds up. This can result in the mother taking off and abandoning the ducklings. It is also not uncommon to see ducks and their hatchlings in backyard swimming pools. If this occurs, we recommend that people leave gates open if possible and encourage them to leave, without chasing them, so they can find suitable nearby wetlands. Ducks and ducklings will be making the journey from nest to wetlands from now until about November. To report injured or orphaned ducklings, call our Wildcare Helpline on 9474 9055. Rick Dawson
