25.01.2022 SHANE WATSON’S T20 BATTING CHECKLIST provides sound technical and mindset advice.

24.01.2022 LEG-SPIN BOWLING MASTERCLASS from the MASTER.

23.01.2022 Here’s a new warm up batting drill trialled today for the first time by Hunter Peters. The idea is for the player to rehearse the movement patterns before each throw down. The partner or coach then has a cue to where to throw the ball, with the player getting the opportunity to repetitively learn the shoulder dip, footwork patterns, head position and point of contact, etc.

21.01.2022 Demonstration of warm up drill for leg spin. Budding leg spin bowlers need good over spin and side spin, including the ability to consistently get the ball above the batter’s eye level whilst also landing the ball on a good line and length. A good line to start for a right hand batsman is around off stump, with middle and leg line an option when either in good rhythm, getting a lot of spin, or bowling to tailenders. This stationary drill requires strong use of the front arm t...o deliver the ball, plus a strong back leg drive, which provides under and over energy. Ideally, the back leg needs to drive over a strong braced front leg. To get good side spin, a good tip is for the bowling arm to release the ball a little wider than the vertical, spinning the ball across the line of the body out in front of the chest. To assist with efficient body alignment and follow through, try landing the back foot behind the front foot with the front foot landing fairly straight. For left hand batters, a good starting line is outside off stump so the that ball is directed towards off stump, body alignment and angle of run up adjusted to suit. Open up an invitation for lefties to drive through cover point against the spin. Leg spinners need to practice more than any other type of bowlers, since the skill of using wrists and fingers takes a lot of consistent time and effort to master. The leg spinner needs to be persistent and a little bit crazy, always wanting to bowl, and not getting too flustered when getting hit for a six or bowling a few poor deliveries. When conditions are very good for batting, the skilful leg spinner may just be the bowler the captain needs to turn to in order to make things happen and pick up some wickets. See more

21.01.2022 Batting can be like driving a car. It’s beneficial to go up and down the gears, accelerate and decelerate, etc. When players drive beautifully for boundaries, the opposing captain may employ a sweeper to contain the runs and frustrate the batsman into an error. The batter could certainly continue to play the same drives to the outfielders for singles, but there may be even better benefits through working the ball into the outfield into open spaces to score 2 runs. The ability to play a skilful range of shots to similar deliveries placing the ball into gaps is a good sign of class batting, and should be a focus in practice, not just hitting balls into the nets.

10.01.2022 This is Zoe Valencic Australian U15s Female Player. We’ve been modelling a strong and consistent leg spin bowling action over the last few months. She is now making excellent progress with bowling to various plans, as well as adapting to the batting tactics of experienced players. This is a leg break which had the batter in two minds due to the overspin plus also squared him up with side spin. Also, some extra zip off the wicket created by the follow through didn’t allow time for the batter to adjust.

06.01.2022 The kneeling position allows more focus to be on the wrist and hand position, which is very important for achieving excessive side spin. For a big turning leg break, at release, the back of the hand should face backwards with the fingers and wrist rotating anticlockwise.

05.01.2022 Masterclass in 'How to Prepare for Batting in Test Match Cricket'. None better than these two legends to demonstrate and explain their insights and wisdom.

05.01.2022 Shane Watson shares some relevant philosophies on Fitness for Cricket based on his professional cricket journey. This is a good read with pre-season not being too far away. Certainly there is value in cricketers becoming involved in long term strength and conditioning programs that are individually tailored to their playing role(s) and where injury prevention is highly valued. ... Individual, team and/or club cricket fitness programs should also be periodised around training and match workloads. I look forward to Shane’s next post where he will be sharing samples of cricket specific movement exercises.

02.01.2022 SHANE WARNE LEG-SPIN BOWLING ACTION IN SUPER SLOW MOTION

02.01.2022 Adding game awareness to net practice is very important for young cricket players. This is a short video clip of 14 year old Flinders player Hunter Peters advancing down the wicket to practice hitting on drives and off drives to similar deliveries with the aim of regularly beating the fielding efforts of the bowler. Success with this approach to playing spin bowling will likely force the opposition captain to bring the fielders in, therefore allowing more opportunities to hit boundaries over the top down the ground. Calling, running between wickets and fitness are also developed in this type of open netted implicit learning training task. More sample training activities to follow in future posts.

01.01.2022 Another good delivery from Zoe Valencic. This time from a different angle. Notice the orange area for Zoe to aim to bowl into. Leg stump is a good line from around the wicket.
