22.01.2022 For 88-year-old Ernest, regaining his balance and coordination with our in-home occupational therapy service has enabled his return to gardening. I am now back in the garden with my beautiful wife. It is a special place for us. It is where we can talk about our son, who tragically passed away, said Ernest. This OT Week, we celebrate our 67 OTs who help people of all ages with physical, sensory, or cognitive problems.... Read Ernest's story here: bit.ly/2TFW6hT

20.01.2022 In South Australia, we lead the state-wide HIV service. For Nursing in the Community Week, we spoke to Caroline Amato, Director Clinical Operations, who manages this important service. Our care is underpinned by confidentiality, acceptance, care, trust, empathy, respect, empowerment and partnership, said Caroline. Our clients are empowered to self-manage their health at home to avoid hospital admissions. We're privileged to serve the community by tailoring care packages for people who are either newly diagnosed with HIV; living with complex health needs; or new to treatment and care in SA.

18.01.2022 Every home care package makes a difference to an older Australian and their family. We welcome the Federal Budget announcement of new home care packages, adding much-needed capacity to the home care system. Despite the welcome increase, more packages for high need Australians are required. These home care packages prevent hospital admissions and delay entry into Residential Aged Care Facilities. This provides better care for Australians and gives greater economic and social value to the community.

18.01.2022 Dr Helena Williams is part of an international research team that will analyse big data to interpret the varying experiences of older Australians accessing different types of health care services. The nationwide study aims to improve Australians’ access to health care services and their health outcomes; as well as the effectiveness and costs of those services. Funded by the Medical Research Future Fund, the study’s findings will shape and inform best care for people who need ...aged care. Read more here: https://bit.ly/3cxGqGf

16.01.2022 Show you care by asking a loved one, friend or colleague if they are okay today. R U OK Day is more significant than ever this year and through our People Strategy, we offer a range of resources to our people with our Stronger Together Connection and Wellbeing programme. By looking after ourselves, we can better care for our clients across Australia.

12.01.2022 They say there’s no place like home. For hundreds of South Australians, it is the place where they receive our nursing care, including blood transfusions essential to their health. Kelly Fraser, South Australian Director Clinical Operations, says our clients can be elderly and frail; or young but with low immunity, so the blood transfusion service is vital in limiting visits to the hospital. Understandably, the demand has continued to grow. "In 2019, we completed a total of 291 blood transfusions, and the past six months we have already done more than 300, said Kelly.

12.01.2022 During NAIDOC Week we are proud to launch our second Reconciliation Action Plan. Our RAP 2020-2022 is an important milestone in our journey to help bring about a just, equitable and reconciled Australia. With our teams across the country, we will work towards meaningful change in the way we embrace our First Nation’s people in the communities we serve through the care we provide and importantly, in our own hearts and minds. With our RAP, we will honour and reflect on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and their story that began more than 65,000 years ago. The painting is ‘Seed Pod Dreaming’ by artist Micky Barlow. Micky is a Kokatha woman, whose people are the traditional owners of a region in northern SA. The painting is proudly displayed in our office in Collinswood, SA.

11.01.2022 After a decade-long battle with cancer, Adelaide woman Jenna Crierie died last October at age 33. Towards the end of her life, she was able to find comfort in being cared for by RDNS palliative care nurses at her own home and surrounded by her doting family. "Jenna was very keen to stay at home in her environment ... we had her room set up with a hospital bed and all the equipment she needed. The nurses were always very caring and willing to listen if we had any concerns, Jenna's mother Diane says. As part of National Palliative Care Week, we give thanks for the lives of clients we've cared for, and recognise the contribution of all our of palliative care services staff in helping give Australians quality end-of-life care at home: https://bit.ly/3wzafyQ

09.01.2022 We support our older clients to maintain their strength, coordination, balance and flexibility, to remain active with a team of physios who specialise in gerontology. This month, our highly-skilled allied health leaders, Frances Wallwork and Kathryn Devereux, lectured at the Australian Physiotherapy Association's Gerontology course. Pictured is our physiotherapist Lara who attended the course: "Factors like mobility, balance, continence, and medications, can combine to cause huge impacts for older people. I'm looking forward to using my new tools to support our clients maintain their wellbeing and independence."

08.01.2022 Our new research with University of South Australia and SA Health highlights how our highly skilled nurses are safely delivering complex care such as blood transfusions in the home. The study investigated 1790 blood transfusions conducted over 15 years in home and aged care facilities by our RDNS nurses. It found the transfusions were performed safely and efficiently. For Glenelg North client Hartley (pictured with Registered Nurse Daniel Allmand), receiving blood transfusion...s in the home is an invaluable service for him and his family. "The home service is amazing - I really appreciate it," he says. "Getting to the hospital can take a lot of effort, and to have the RDNS staff come into my home where I can be more comfortable makes everything easier." More: https://bit.ly/3g2Q9aW

05.01.2022 A huge congratulations to our team who have picked up four national LearnX Awards for their COVID-19 online learning model! As we moved to new ways of working during the start of the pandemic, we rapidly transitioned face-to-face workshops to online learning models to support our front-line workers. The most crucial of these online learning models - 'COVID-19 ‘Protecting yourself, your clients and your community’ supported frontline teams to safely use PPE and prevent COVID-19 infection.

04.01.2022 With my weekly physio sessions, I can climb the stairs no problem! said our 79-year old client, Keith. Siobhan and Isabelle from our physio team designed tailored exercises so Keith could strengthen his arms and legs following an emergency bypass operation in March. Using simple household items to exercise, Keith has improved his balance and enjoys the independence of walking around Fremantle. On World Physiotherapy Day, we thank our 93-person strong team, who provided over... 60,000 hours of care across Australia last year. Read the story here: bit.ly/2F1ZCjg

03.01.2022 Today marks World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, and to show their support for the eradication of elder abuse, clients from five of our Perth social centres have been busy! They've made 308 purple flowers to contribute to the 30m-long Purple Road, which will be displayed at King's Park. The Purple Road is a community awareness project facilitated by the Northern Suburbs Community Legal Centre, and features a 'road' of purple flowers crocheted by seniors & arts and craft groups, each representing someone's story, conversation or reflection on the subject of elder abuse.

03.01.2022 Happy 100th birthday to our client Carmela! She celebrated the milestone recently with clients and staff at our Pendana Social Centre in Bentley, Perth, a venue featuring clients from a diverse range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Carmela attends three times a week for groups which are primarily of Italian heritage, and she's very active within these groups," says Assistant Coordinator Dorota Kalbarczyk. ... "We also have many groups based on cultures from Asia, the Middle East, Europe and across the world, where clients can come and connect with others who have similar backgrounds. We know there are many benefits for our older clients of being able to come together and communicate in a shared language, it helps with their physical and mental wellbeing, and they are much more likely to stay connected to their local communities. "We love seeing our clients like Carmela using our services to remain socially active and maintain their connection to their communities - and being able to celebrate such an amazing milestone with us!"

01.01.2022 Our clients say that they love being cared for in their own surroundings and we are keeping them safe from exposure to COVID-19, said Sue Meteyard, Director, Clinical Operations. Our Hospital in the Home team on the Sunshine Coast has been looking after acutely unwell people at home, as well as both suspect and confirmed COVID-19 clients who need to be monitored while in home isolation. This week, for Nursing in the Community Week, we celebrate the expertise of our home hospital teams across Australia and honour our nurses who enable clients to stay safe at home and get the vital care they need.

01.01.2022 Our Western HealthLinks service manages more than 7,500 Melburnians with chronic and complex health conditions in their homes avoiding unnecessary hospital admissions. Jennifer Collins, Director Clinical Operations, said her team visits clients at home and connects them with the support and care they need in the community. When a client is concerned and/or unwell, they provide an urgent rapid assessment and nursing response that keeps the majority of our clients safe at home... rather than present to hospital. #nursinginthecommunityweek
