24.01.2022 Resilience in response to a pandemic and it's economic impacts Here at Re-Architecture we are taking in the changes that the COVID-19 virus and necessary response has brought, with the physical isolation, shutdown of services and extra attention on hygiene practices, and we are thinking about how to build resilience to better cope with this situation and into the future. We hope that the impacts of these changes have not been too disruptive for you, or at least that the out...Continue reading

21.01.2022 Yesterday was World Water Day This years theme is Water and Climate Change. Some simple ways that you can save water, reduce emissions and mitigate the effects of Climate Change are:... - Install a rainwater tank - Reduce your time in the shower - Eat more of a plant-based diet - Buy local and seasonal produce - Unplug and switch off to reduce energy use You can find more resources from the UN here on how to take global action https://www.un.org/en/actnow/ In a Permaculture design you can take a look at your water flows, what are the ways water can enter your property, what does it do there (off a roof and down the pipe, into a tank or does it pool in places) and how does it leave (out to the street/down the sink or soak in to the ground) Examine the water flow and see if there are ways you can slow, store, spread and sink the water.

20.01.2022 This week we are taking part in Moonee Valley Council's Acts of Kindness Free Workshops, with a session on Sustainable Living to reduce your energy, water use and waste.

17.01.2022 Builder's have joined the declaration of the climate and ecological emergency. Builders Declare are giving a webinar tmw on zero carbon homes.

12.01.2022 Business responding to the lockdown with sustainable outcomes. As we take in the changes that the COVID-19 virus and the necessary response, physical isolation, shutdown of services and extra attention on hygiene practices, we are thinking about how to build flexibility to better cope with this situation and into the future. We hope that the impacts of these changes have not been too disruptive for you and your business, or at least that the outcomes will become positive on...es. Whilst many of us work from home we may become more mindful of the way our business operates, the impacts the business has and reliance on other businesses, services, government and the environment. Examining inputs, such as electricity and water, and outputs, such as spending on these service bills, we can recognise the carbon emissions of our business activity or the potential financial costs if the impacts of climate change escalate. There are plenty of ways we can make modifications even as we remain at home. Addressing the energy & water efficiency of your home or business premises can reduce your bills, improve health and productivity, whilst also reducing carbon emissions. A good place to begin is by auditing your business’ energy and water consumption. Look for options that are renewable and sourced locally, switching to efficient alternatives, retrofitting premises and modifying behaviours for energy saving. City of Maribyrnong (as well as some other Councils) have partnered with Sustainable Melbourne Fund to provide access to loans for local businesses to make environmental upgrades to their property. See: https://www.maribyrnong.vic.gov.au//Environmental-ugrades- Victorian Energy Upgrades is a program by the State Government of Victoria to help businesses cut power bills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions with information on energy saving as well as discounted energy-efficient products and services. 09.01.2022 Here is a great resource for anyone in the suburbs wanting to reduce their carbon footprint, lesson their environmental impact and build resilience. (also lost of relevant information for rural or urban dwellers) Based on permaculture principles and ethics, it is a work book to help guide you through adapting to a sustainable life. This book is now available in online format fo ‘pay what you feel’.... I feel that this book is invaluable, and necessary in our response to limiting the intensity and the impacts of climate change.

09.01.2022 Re-Architecture is looking forward to participating in the Off-grid living festival this year. It looks like a super awesome weekend is planned!

07.01.2022 The issue of sand use and demand isn't being widely discussed. A seemingly abundant resource, we need to acknowledge it is not easily renewable. And the sand we use in concrete is not the sort we have masses of in deserts. "The sand we need is the more angular stuff found in the beds, banks, and floodplains of rivers, as well as in lakes and on the seashore. The demand for that material is so intense that around the world, riverbeds and beaches are being stripped bare, and fa...rmlands and forests torn up to get at the precious grains. And in a growing number of countries, criminal gangs have moved in to the trade, spawning an often lethal black market in sand." The use of fly-ash as a replacement also needs to be examined. Whilst we have this by-product from coal-fired power now, we need to rapidly reduce and end coal power. So what will we use then? The embodied energy of concrete is high, and the source of materials used to make it should be questioned. Concrete has enabled such amazing advances in construction and architecture, but is it now time to end our love affair this grey mass?

06.01.2022 The 130 yr old train between Adelaide and Melbourne will close next month without further government support. tell the SA government to reinstate its funding. If you want to reduce how much you fly but still have the freedom to travel interstate, we need to keep this service

03.01.2022 Re-Architecture are very happy to contribute an article for this online magazine that has been created in place of this year's Off-grid Living Festival. You can read about "Frugal solutions for a sustainable home" on page 93

01.01.2022 Having recently completed a renovation of the rear of their house, the Owners decided to focus their attention on the rest of the home, and how to further retrofit to be more energy efficient to reduce their heating and cooling energy bills. The existing brick veneer dwelling was built using the standard windows at the time with aluminium frames with single glazing. Whilst the new windows in the renovated part of the house are double-glazed, the existing windows were a source... of significant heat loss in winter and some heat gain in summer. To help make the most of the upgrade when they replaced the windows, the owners contacted Re-Architecture for advice on the window type, location and sizing of the new double-glazed windows. Read on to hear more about how windows affect heating & cooling use. https://www.rearchitecture.com.au/retrofitting-windows-fo/
