22.01.2022 This weekend training continued for the Melbourne Marathon Festival with thanks to the crew from BRT Run. A fantastic event with a 17km and 34km option. There was no chance of me racing the steam train as it flew past, but the cheers and waves from the passengers certainly helped me along the way. With Fioran Bourke



21.01.2022 Whether getting fit for life or training for sport, dont underestimate the benefit of high intensity work, and stairs are a perfect way to get your heart rate up. Warm up cool down and 5 sets of these bad boys only took 30mins, but my legs are still shaking.

17.01.2022 I noticed this bit of info in the Wellbeing section of the Herald Sun on Sunday. Whilst Im not a fan of this as a stretch (too much load on some not so elastic structures), it does highlight the importance of stretching. The old saying "move it or lose it" is true, so with some simple stretches done daily you can help prevent injuries and improve your heart health at the same time.

17.01.2022 What exercise is best for me? We all know that exercise is good for us, but when it comes to working out what to do the options can be overwhelming. Take for instance the simple chin-up. The video shows two good examples. A traditional chin-up will help build strength (and bulk) in your back and arm muscles. By comparison the Kipping Pull-up as performed by Mel required less load on the arms because of the momentum of the lower body, but this needs amazing coordination, cor...e strength and produces a higher cardiovascular output. The key is to set yourself a goal, then pick the exercises that will help you achieve this. But most of all, have some fun and although challenges are good, always work to your own ability.

08.01.2022 Training for a marathon? Remember long runs are meant to be fun, and believe it or not they shouldnt be too uncomfortable. Ive learned the hard way pushing for speed on the long runs only increases your chances of breaking down with an injury. Focus on getting the kms done but forget about speed, and while youre out there take time to have some fun and enjoy running. Speed will come, but save it for your shorter runs and interval sessions. I had a great run this morni...ng along the Barwon with my running buddy Davey J, and it was wonderful to see so many people out, including super star Jono Parkinson clocking up yet more kms. And remember, if you are struggling with your long runs try and team up with friends or join some of the free local groups. 01.01.2022 So some runs just dont feel that great, but thats ok. Listen to your body. I know I struggle to drink enough water and I think the interrupted sleep thanks to #rio2016 is taking its toll. So today post run, its time to walk in the "refreshing" water and then home for a stretch on the foam roller.
