25.01.2022 Our team at Clarkson Library received this lovely note of thanks from a very grateful patron, who got the job after attending a resume help service session. Follow the link to discover fun and informative sessions at your local City of Wanneroo library: https://bit.ly/3g4ER3f

25.01.2022 BACK TO THE BEGINNING - Volunteer Literacy Tutoring in WA. By the end of 1978 a total of 200 tutors had been trained and 219 students assisted. Three metropolitan training courses were offered in 1980 (and one of those tutors stayed with the program until 2013!) while 1981 saw the establishment of local groups operating under volunteer Coordinators- the Swan and Fremantle groups were the first to be set up. The Program would not still be operating 40 plus years later without the efforts and commitment of group Coordinators, the linchpins of volunteer literacy tutoring throughout the state.

23.01.2022 Volunteers are the best! We would like to take this opportunity to thank and acknowledge all Read Write Now volunteers during National Volunteer Week 2020 - Changing Communities, Changing Lives. The commitment to tutoring and keeping connected to students during restrictions has been outstanding. #NVW2020 WA Volunteering Snapshot There are over 600,000 volunteers in WA and many more if we include informal volunteering.... The socio-economic and cultural contribution volunteers make to WA is estimated to be worth $39 billion per year. "Without the generosity of volunteers, our communities would grind to a halt." Tina Williams | CEO Volunteering WA

23.01.2022 The stories in this link are from Adult Learning Australia, part of a feature on Lockdown Learning. A great, inspiring read! We would love to hear about how you coped, or perhaps are still coping, with the Covid-19 restrictions in WA. What have you tried or done differently during this time? Plus, do you think you will continue it? All good news stories welcome! Please leave your comments below. https://ala.asn.au/stories/lockdown-learning/

17.01.2022 So many boxes ticked- can you add anything else?

17.01.2022 Armadale tutor Neil Macdonald's commitment to adult literacy has been acknowledged in the 2020 Burt Awards - Community Service. Neil has been a volunteer tutor for Read Write Now since 2001. Congratulations and thank you Neil. Local member for Burt, Matt Keogh said that the awards are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the "selfless individuals who give up their time to make our community a better place, to change the story for our neighbours and friends." Neil is pictured with his RWN Coordinators Loraine and Veronica.

17.01.2022 A fabulous collection of photos from the State Library showing bookstores around the state. Do you have any to add?

16.01.2022 Happening Thursday 12 November!

16.01.2022 2020 International Literacy Day is September 8 and its theme is "Literacy teaching and learning in the COVID-19 crisis and beyond". "The 8th of September was proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO in 1966 to remind the international community of the importance of literacy for individuals, communities and societies, and the need for intensified efforts towards more literate societies". Based on information released by the United Nations, throughout the world - ... - 773 million adults and young people lack basic literacy skills; - 617 million children and adolescents are not achieving minimum proficiency levels in reading and mathematics; -During the initial phase of the pandemic, schools were closed disrupting the education of 62.3 per cent of the world’s student population of 1.09 billion; - Adult literacy and education were absent in initial education response plans, therefore many youth and adults with no or low literacy skills have had limited access to life-saving information. https://www.un.org/en/observances/literacy-day If you have a story or experience of COVID-19 to share in relation to tutoring and education, write a comment or make contact via email. We would love to hear about it.

14.01.2022 They say that everyone has a story to tell! You don't have much time but there's nothing like a deadline to get you - or your student - started!

13.01.2022 And at the end of the day (Professor) Beetson’s message is clear, people make better choices in their life when they can read and write. An uplifting story worth sharing.

13.01.2022 BACK TO THE BEGINNING - In 1982, tutors and staff from the Volunteer Tutor Scheme (forerunner to RWN) were involved in the development of radio programs on 6NR for the print disabled. Tutors worked the desk and did stints as radio presenters, with students tuning in. This evolved into Information Radio (now Vision Australia radio), which is still in operation today. 1982 also saw the establishment of the Rockingham group, with Mandurah set up a year later. Specific training was conducted that year for 19 tutors to work with students with intellectual disabilities.

13.01.2022 Some very positive feedback to the great staff at Clarkson library - something for RWN tutors to keep in mind for their students. Check out your local library, there is so much on offer. #ALW2020

06.01.2022 Reading a wide range of genres creates new pathways in the brain and improves problem solving skills. A study by Michigan State University found that Nobel Pri...ze winning scientists are almost three times more likely (2.85 times to be precise) than the average scientist to have an artistic or crafty hobby that is unrelated to their field of expertise. The reason for this is brain cross-training. Reading and immersing ourselves in something completely different from our work, activates regions of the brain we are not in the habit of using. The more diverse books we read, the more we are able to think in diverse ways. -- Dr Helena Popovic is a best-selling author and leading authority on neuroplasticity and improving brain function. Over the next few weeks we'll be sharing her favourite benefits of reading, backed by neuroscience. We hope you enjoy these fascinating facts!

06.01.2022 This brought a smile to our faces. Have you been putting something off? Perhaps by jotting it down in the Comments section, you may just act on it! Have a go Photo courtesy of For Reading Addicts

06.01.2022 Do you know someone who would benefit from having a Read Write Now tutor work one-to-one with them to improve their reading and writing skills? Perhaps they would like to take advantage of the reduced fee courses being offered at the moment (check your local TAFE and other training organisations) but just need to brush up their literacy and confidence. The job market is looking very different and will be very competitive, so being prepared is vital! Please share this post to other friends and family. Let's get the message out there that RWN volunteers are available throughout the metro area and in some regional centres, the service is free and it can make such a difference!

06.01.2022 For those tutors and students who access this valuable venue.

04.01.2022 We'd say earlier than that! A big shout out to all of our volunteers who have embraced online tutoring over the past months to ensure the connection between them and their student stays strong. If you know someone who needs to improve their literacy skills to compete in the post-Covid job market, suggest they contact us on 1800 018 012. The service is free, one-to-one and it works!

04.01.2022 What a wonderful mural! What do you think?

04.01.2022 LET'S GO BACK TO THE BEGINNING In 1976 Bill Devereux, a member of the Adult Literacy Board in England, visited Perth and inspired the formation of an Executive Committee to oversee the establishment of a program using volunteers to tutor in adult literacy. This was a novel idea in Australia at the time and not strongly supported by the education sector. The following year the Committee placed an advertisement in "The West Australian" to attract interested volunteers and the first training course was conducted for 7 tutors.

02.01.2022 Now that we are all so much better with online training and learning, why not have a bit of fun during Adult Learners Week (1-8 September) and learn something new - from beauty tips to learning phrases in a new language. For RWN tutors, there may be something here for your student to do as well. https://www.facebook.com/atweacollege Check the ALW site at https://adultlearnersweek.org/to see what else is on offer. Please share anything you find that you think others would find interesting and be sure to let us know what your new skill is!

02.01.2022 "I just wanted to touch base with you and let you know that A (my tutor) has been amazing. Oh my god she is like my guardian angel, I literally would not have been able to do what I’ve done so far without her. I cannot thank you all enough for this service. It’s absolutely amazing!" When Read Write Now receives feedback like this, we know that we are making a difference in people's lives. In extraordinary times, our volunteer tutors are doing an extraordinary job!
