25.01.2022 Our early literacy kit. How do we decide on a teaching sequence when introducing letter-sound correspondences?Systematic synthetic phonics programs all differ slightly in their sequence. We used some of the Carmine principles such as keeping sounds that sound similar (a, u) and sounds that are produced in similar positions such as f,v apart to avoid confusion. Letters that look similar such as b and d are also taught at different times. Some of our initial sounds are sounds ...that can be stretched out ( continuant consonants) such as s and m as these are easier to use for beginner readers when teaching sound blending. Another consideration is to choose developmentally appropriate speech sounds in reference to children’s ability to correctly and clearly articulate the consonant sounds. Sounds like r,v, th only occur later in the sequence. #earlyliteracy #earlyliteracyskills #literacykits#readingscience #syntheticphonics See more

20.01.2022 We use some of Letterland’s mnemonic devices in our early literacy program. The use of engaging characters with accompanying stories, songs and gestures provide multiple cues to develop a good letter-sound knowledge. The characters stimulate children’s imagination and actively engage them. Research shows that this makes it easier to learn the correspondences (Ehri, Deffer & Wilce, 1984) Letterland is cited by the National Reading Panel as a fun and relevant program for beginner readers. #earlyliteracy#earliteracymatters #earlyliteracyskills #syntheticphonics #readingscience #letterland #letterlandbooks #letterlandphonics

17.01.2022 The National Reading Panel found that phonemic instruction helped children of all levels to improve their reading, including preschoolers. Studies show phonemic awareness to be a foundational skill that is an essential building block for reading. #earlyliteracy#earlyliteracymatters #earlyliteracyskills #phonemicawareness #phonemicawarenessskills #learningtoread #heggerty #heggertyphonemicawareness

25.12.2021 FREE phonics resources for summer teaching! Two important and difficult features of the English Alphabetic Code are: 1. Sounds can be spelled in different ways... 2. A spelling (grapheme) can represent different sounds. These concepts are fundamental for anyone learning to read and spell in English. If you need resources for summer teaching, don't forget that we have free resources for teaching these concepts.
