24.01.2022 Well we all did it! We made it to the end of an interesting and unusual term. It has been an absolute joy for us because we have watched our students grow in their reading and confidence. We have loved hearing the stories of how our reluctant readers have begun reading for pleasure for the first time, how they have started sounding out everything in sight, and how excited they are to see us each week. 06.01.2022 This Spelfabet article (2017) on reading provides great arguments for the teaching of reading with a systematic, synthetic phonics-based approach. Those of you who know me will know how much I detest levelled readers with repetitive/predicable text. These readers teach our children to memorise or guess words. This process works for some children, particularly those with a good memory, but not all. There are many children for whom this method just does not make sense, yet some... educators persist in teaching reading this way because they just don’t know any other. Teaching reading in a systematic phonics teaching sequence makes sense to all readers, not just some. There is a great deal of research out there that highlights the importance of this method of teaching reading. Just google the Science of Reading and you’ll see what I mean! Here at Reading Connections we use evidence-based methods and we can see the difference this makes with those children who have struggled with outdated methods. Reading suddenly starts to make sense. It is such a joy when we see our students’ confidence with reading starting to blossom. It’s like they are opening up a whole new world!
