24.01.2022 Sound Walls - great idea for your classroom!

22.01.2022 Please help Caden spread his message! https://youtu.be/7m7cI9-5V8o His 'Red Letter' (see Light it Red for Dyslexia) is a plea for help requesting that we increase #dyslexia awareness in schools and that all kids with reading difficulties are provided with high quality, evidence-based instruction as early as possible. ... One of his requests is that Australia use a '#Phonics Check' in year 1 to identify kids with reading difficulties. This check should identify problems with phonemic awareness (http://www.readingdoctor.com.au/phonemic-awareness/) and phonics skills (http://www.readingdoctor.com.au/why-teach-synthetic-phonics/). We couldn't agree more! Great work Caden! Do you know a student with reading difficulties / dyslexia? They can make their own 'Red Letter' to try to convey this important message to our leaders in education. For more details, see: http://www.myredletter.com.au/

15.01.2022 Huge congratulations to the Department for Education & Child Development, South Australia for leading efforts to improve the teaching of reading in our schools with the phonics check trial! Although it's extremely disheartening to learn that so many of SA's students have difficulties with basic reading skills, it's also very uplifting to hear that SA educators recognise the importance of the phonics check as an invaluable tool for identifying struggling students. We urgently... need to implement the scientific evidence for the effective teaching of reading to help the unacceptably high number of Australian students who have literacy difficulties: http://www.readingdoctor.com.au/research-on-reading/ The phonics check is a test of children's 'decoding' ability. You can read more about this crucial reading skill and why the check contains made-up words (like 'lig' and 'peem') here: http://www.readingdoctor.com.au/decoding/ https://theconversation.com/south-australias-trial-of-engla

10.01.2022 Reading Doctor software helps young kids at risk of reading failure to significantly improve their reading skills, according to new scientific research just published in the International Journal of Speech-Language Pathology. The study, led by Dr. Karyn Carson, was conducted by researchers from Flinders University. It showed that Reading Doctor software is effective in helping young kids at risk of reading difficulties to significantly improve letter-sound knowledge (see htt...p://www.readingdoctor.com.au/letter-sound-knowledge), phoneme awareness (see http://www.readingdoctor.com.au/phonemic-awareness) and early decoding skills (see http://www.readingdoctor.com.au/decoding). These skills are crucial for developing the word recognition skills required for reading. They are also the skills many struggling readers find most difficult to learn. Here are the three apps used in the study: LETTER SOUNDS 1 : Phonics Graphemes for Beginners http://www.readingdoctor.com.au/letter-sounds-1-pro BLENDING SOUNDS 1 : Phonics Words for Beginners http://www.readingdoctor.com.au/blending-sounds-1-pro SPELLING SOUNDS 1 : Writing Words with Phonics http://www.readingdoctor.com.au/spelling-sounds-1-pro If you have any questions about the study or the apps used in it, please contact us. Developed by speech-language pathologist Dr. Bartek Rajkowski, this is a 'must-have' app for anybody teaching kids the relationship between the speech sounds in English and the letter patterns that represent them! Word Builder - The Phonics Teaching Tool is a bit like a set of magnetic letters for building words - except instead of using letters, the app lets you build words using letter-sound patterns, complete with speech sounds spoken by an animated mouth (with Australian, US and UK accents). It's much more than that, though! As Jan Polkinghorne (phonics guru from SPELD) says, Word Builder is the best program I have seen that enables students to play with sounds and hear the word they make...This app is an excellent way to give those beginning in English literacy at any age a tool to really help boost confidence and skill. Well worth the money! New features include: new tools allow you to build 99% of English words! new letter-sound tiles new presets to support the phonics program you use save the words you build as images share words online make lists of words for home practice completely updated artwork! + MUCH, MUCH more!
