25.01.2022 I love this fusion or reading, creative writing and art! Blackout Poetry, also known as Erasure poetry and Found poetry, is simple and fun, plus you get really beautiful results. Kelly McCaughrain at The Blank Page suggests, ‘It’s also great for helping nervous or blocked writers get going. In fact writers often use it as a way to kick start their creativity.’ #blackoutpoetry #readingdrops... #skimmingandscanning #theblankpage #getwriting #creativewriting See more

25.01.2022 Toys that move often help children blend/join/melt sounds together. #readingdrops #phonicsforparents #blending #phonicsblending #phonicsblendingideas #blendsounds #teachingreading #teachingreadingstrategies

21.01.2022 Interesting (UK) guidance; the notes provide some clear and useful advice about what schools should be providing for children who are learning to read. For example: - Your child should not be advised to use picture or context clues to figure out words. - If they are struggling to form letters accurately, then it won’t help them to have to start on the line or use ‘lead-ins’. - They should have reading books full of words they can actually read because they have learned how to... decode with those sounds, with no ‘guessing’ required. https://www.gov.uk//validation-of-systematic-synthetic-pho

21.01.2022 Despite rarely posting selfies (#hateselfies ), I thought this reflected how I felt walking out of the wonderful #ronaldmacdonald house in Perth... it’s like this little ray of light shining over such sad and testing situations. Grateful to have received training face-to-face (although offered both) because I know I would have tried to multi-task if doing it online, and not connected so well with the material, messages and overall vision and values of this incredible place a...nd team. The thinking space and processing time my drive there and back gave me was important too. In a world where we are ‘connecting’ less, let’s make sure our face to face connections really matter.... read real books with children whenever possible, give them space and time to respond, reflect and enjoy AND most of all be the shining light in their struggles. . . . #readingdrops #realbooks #readingwithchildren See more

20.01.2022 It doesn’t need to be a book for adults either!! Children are inspired by you taking an interest, reading, and enjoying their books too. Share something that is funny, interesting or unusual on a book cover... enthusiasm breeds enthusiasm AND children can’t be what they can’t see. #readingdrops #parentinghacks #readingwithkids #dadlife #mumlife #improveyourchildsreading #phonicsteaching #kindyparents #primaryeducation #sendteacher #educationsupport #sen #educationsupportteacher

12.01.2022 Storyworlds!!! A great way to get children telling stories and using the language learned from reading. They can either make up a world to go with a story or book they already know, or make a story world for their own story/interests/toys/characters. Shoeboxes are great for starting with and adding bits and bobs from the garden, sand, play dough, pasta/spaghetti/rice, shaving foam.... all sorts! These are v cheap bits and bobs I bought for the classroom but my children are children are enjoying adding their own bits to. #readingdrops #storyworlds #talkforwriting #piecorbett #storytelling

03.01.2022 More news on the research and rationale behind ‘systematic phonics & decoding -first’ approach to teaching reading... nothing new but nicely written, and provides more much-needed challenge to the outdated practices so many schools, teachers, and more worryingly, teacher training providers, still believe to be acceptable. https://www.edweek.org//is-this-the-end-of-three-/2020/12
