24.01.2022 Become confident readers by teaching children effective decoding skills . This week, our Prep children were learning about the split -digraph ‘a-e’ making the long vowel /a/ sound like in the word tape. We should not shy away from teaching our children the correct terminology. Why teach them magic ‘e’ or silent ‘e’ when you can teach them the correct terminology ’split digraph’.... A Split Digraph 2 letters making the one sound that is split with another letter in between. Kids always love our hands-on circle sticker activity. Another awesome SMART Spelling way to make learning easy! Each circle sticker represents 1 sound. 1. Kids use their phoneme fist to visually show the number of sounds in a word. 2. Then, kids place the sticker dots to show their understanding of how many sounds in a particular word. 3. In the case of a split digraph, they cut the sticker dot in half to represent the 2 letters making the one sound , that is split up with a letter in the middle. 4. Lastly, they write the spelling choices needed to spell the word. So remember kids, ‘e’ isn’t magic because it’s actually doing a job! 13.01.2022 It’s as simple as that! SAVE THIS A Grapheme is a spelling choice. It is important for children to learn the alternative spelling of sounds in words. ... Example /k/ phoneme can be written in 5 different ways: c -cat, k -kitten, ck -duck, ch -school, q -queen. At Reading Rock Stars we use a well researched teacher tool - the THRASS Chart to explicitly teach children the 44 phonemes (speech sounds) of the English language. Each phoneme box on the chart has the most common graphemes. Children will learn to use the correct spelling choices when learning accurate phoneme grapheme correspondence. Children learn the phonemes alongside with the graphemes. We add on more graphemes along the way when we come across new words. This process does take time. However, if you practice it the right way from the very beginning, you will definitely find spelling a piece of cake! Spelling is taught in common grapheme patterns along with other spelling strategies. Children learn a lot more when they can comprehend why words are spelt the way they are, rather than cluelessly memorising them. 08.01.2022 Fun in the Sun they say! We had so much fun learning during our online sessions. Using play dough and LEGO, kids explored the phonemes in words. This greatly benefits our visual and kinesthetic learners during our sessions.... Our word of the week is sun. Children can now independently: THRASS - out the words and associate the phoneme to its spelling choice ( grapheme ) identify the key grapheme and locate them correctly on the THRASS CHART. map the THRASS CHART accurately by locating the phoneme box. Example, Row 3 Box 4. count the number of phonemes in each word and place the sound buttons under each phoneme they hear. Children built an awareness that one sound ( phoneme ) can be spelled in different ways. We explored the spelling patterns with the common words of the day. Children were taught systematically to read and spell words with other spelling choices too. Enjoy our snaps! 08.01.2022 The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson It's a brilliant simple rhythmic story as a mouse trys to scare off other woodland creatures from eating him by describing this big beast known as The Gruffalo. Unfortunately The Mouse is about to discover that he's been right all along!... As we all know how the story goes... A mouse took a stroll through the deep dark woods. A fox saw the mouse and the mouse looked good. ... We covered both pre-Reading and post Reading activities. Discussing: Children’s experiences. Spelling a range of descriptive words. Vocabulary words used in the text. Identification of setting, characters, plot and language of choice. Applying adjectives to characters and other nouns and verbs used in the book. Comprehension activities based on child’s ability. Children also had the chance to watch ‘ The Gruffalo ‘ movie and compare it to the text. Apparently, they loved both the movie and the read a loud book session! An engaging and exciting session filled with laughter and fun.
