18.01.2022 How cool is this initiative from the State Library of Western Australia? They are offering FREE books and DVDs to help keep people entertained through self-iso...lation. The library says anyone who is interested can give them a call on 9427 3111 to request a 'mystery box' of around ten books. "Nominate fiction, non-fiction, children's, DVDs or a box with a 'bit of everything' and we will prepare it for you pronto," they said. "Pick up is via a 'non-contact' drive-through service from the State Library van dock on 25 Francis Street, Perth. "Pick up times are 10am and 2pm on weekdays but please call first to place your order." State Library of Western Australia.

17.01.2022 The fructificative goosefoot was foveolariously assembled. The frugivorous and frowsy masticator, whose epidermis was of variegated fuchsinophillic consistency..., masticated her chenopodiaceous repast morosely. Were you able to make meaning from this passage? What would happen if I asked you comprehension questions after you read this? Do you think you'd get them correct? If not, would that mean you need help with comprehension strategies? No. The problem is you had to slowly decode the words. The problem is that these words aren't in your vocabulary. Problems with words ----------> Problems with comprehension. Period. (From DIane McGinness "Why Our Children Can't Read and What We Can Do About" It p. 16)

We believe we still need to use phoni...cs alongside of morphology as kids encounter longer curriculum-based words with Greek and Latin roots. Here is our blog post on this. https://www.phonicbooks.co.uk//phonics-vs-morphology-why-/ See more

05.01.2022 How do you teach beginner readers high-frequency (sight) words with complex spellings? How can you make your approach compatible with your phonics teaching? Te...ach kids to map words and show them the complex part (even if they have not learned it yet). 01.01.2022 How to teach the word 'was' with a phonics approach. The word 'was' will appear very early on in child's literacy journey. How can we introduce it to a student... without encouraging him/her to learn it by sight? The child will most probably already know how to read 2/3 of the word as he/she will have learned the letter and will probably have encountered the letter spelling the sound /z/ as in the words is, his has. So, the tricky part in the word 'was' is the letter spelling the sound /o/. Students need to learn that letters can spell different sounds. Here is how to teach it in a visual way that is consistent with mapping letters and the sounds they spell.
